Firms of different sizes play different roles in organized markets and societies. This report focuses on the particular role that larger firms – firms with 100 employees or more – play in this ecosystem. It shows that larger firms in developing countries have distinct features that set them apart from the rest. These features are closely associated with productivity advantages – their ability not only to lower costs of production through economies of scale and scope, but also to invest in quality and reach demand. These distinct features of large firms translate into improved outcomes for their owners as well as for workers and smaller enterprises in their value chains. The fundamental challenge for economic development, however, is that production often does not reach economic scale in low- and middle-income countries. What is missing are larger, more productive, and outward-oriented firms. The scarcity of larger firms raises the question of how they are created in lower income contexts, and where frictions lie in this process. This report shows that four types of sponsors are often behind large firms: foreign firms creating new affiliates; domestic sponsors having experience with other large firms; governments; and entrepreneurs. Growth paths of large firms also show that distinguishing features of large firms are often in place from the time they are established. Therefore, supporting small firms to grow large is one means for creating large firms, but not sufficient on its own. To fill the 'missing top', governments should support the creation of new large firms from different sources, improve market contestability, and address operational barriers that disproportionally affect larger firms. The challenge lies in balancing the desire for efficiency and welfare benefits of large firms, while avoiding the inefficiencies that result when large firms acquire monopoly power. For development finance institutions seeking to promote a dynamic and competitive private sector, taking a value chain perspective and partnering with larger firms in each indutry - both incumbent firms and new challengers - can benefit firms across the size spectrum.

Since the publication of the first edition of this book nearly 20 years ago, synthetic work devoted to the preparation of non- a-amino acids has expanded greatly.Methods of Non-a-Amino Acid Synthesis, Second Edition has been extensively rewritten and reorganized, providing an up-to-date review of strategies and methods for non-a-amino acid synthesis, particularly those amino acids that are key synthetic intermediates or important compounds in their own right. It focuses on acyclic amino acids of C3–C10, but also aminoalkanoic carboxylic acids, aminoalkenoic acids, and aminoalkynoic acids. The new edition contains many updated references and has a greater emphasis on the biological importance of non-a-amino acids. In addition to an array of synthetic methods, the book offers discussions on why non-a-amino acids are important.The book covers synthetic methods that rely on substituent refunctionalization, the conversion of cyclic precursors to acyclic amino acids, conjugate addition reactions, and enolate anion reactions and condensation reactions that lead to non-a-amino acids. It also examines reactions and strategies that lead to good diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity during synthesis. A chapter devoted to biologically important amino acids includes separate sections on GABA, GABOB, carnitine, DAVA, statine, and other significant amino acids as well as a new section on peptides and proteins that contain non-a-amino acids. Il s'agit d'un travail sur les approches contrast es de la question de la chasse la baleine. L'une est fond e sur les normes occidentales, largement adopt es comme universelles, et l'autre sur une vision exceptionnelle de la question, symbolis e par le Japon. Plus pr cis ment, l' tude se penchera sur le cas de la chasse la baleine dans l'Antarctique (Australie c. Japon, avec intervention de la Nouvelle-Z lande), contest e par l'Australie qui affirmait que le programme japonais de chasse la baleine dans l'Antarctique (JARPA II) n' tait pas conforme aux dispositions de l'article VIII, paragraphe 1, de la Convention internationale pour la r glementation de la chasse la baleine. Apr s un bref aper u de l'histoire de la chasse la baleine dans ces pays en litige, j'aborderai le sujet de la chasse la baleine comme tant davantage culturel que territorial. Il s'agit de voir comment la chasse la baleine, qui occupait une place tr s importante au XIXe si cle, a d clin au XXe si cle, et comment l' mergence mondiale de normes environnementales a r ussi changer radicalement l'attitude l' gard de la chasse la baleine. L' tude examinera les attitudes culturelles l' gard de la chasse la baleine en Australie et au Japon. Enfin, nous examinerons les cons quences de cette d cision pour l'industrie baleini re, actuellement confin e trois pays, l'Islande, la Norv ge et le Japon.
