The frequency of incest and molestation is higher than what is often reported and is far too often swept under the rug. It remains a dirty secret that is locked behind closed doors. That is the story of many women and men from African American families (I'm sure other races experience the same thing too), whether molested by Dad, Mom, an uncle, brother, cousin or even an "aunt" most of the time our ordeals are treated as the "big pink elephant in the room" Everyone sees it but no one wants to talk about it. Family embarrassment or threats, keeps you from ever telling anyone or turning the perpetrator in. it's almost like "if we don't talk about it, that means it never really happened." The mission of this book is to bring healing and wholeness. The central theme is forgiveness. Remember, forgiveness is for you and not them.Octavia Standley is a devoted wife, mother and National Conference Speaker and Host. Octavia Hill (1838-1912) was an English social reformer who concentrated on the welfare of city dwellers. Hill was a co-founder of the National Trust, as well as the Charity Organisation Society (now known as Family Action), which pioneered the home-visiting service that provided the basis for modern social work in the U. K. One of her main beliefs was that urban workers should have ample open spaces to enjoy and relax in, and she campaigned vehemently against destroying urban woodlands. In her 1877 essay "Open Spaces", Hill argues for the protection of green spaces and against the destroying of existing green, open spaces in London, including Hampstead Heath and Parliament Hill Fields-spots that remain open spaces to this day thanks to her efforts. Read & Co. Great Essays is republishing this classic essay now complete with the excerpt "The Open Space Movement" by Charles Edmund Maurice.

This book is a result of many years in the church and in ministry. I have come to find that there is more to meet the eyes in our weekly assemblies than most can even imagine.Every Sunday we gather together for worship and to hear a "life changing" word, yet in most cases; people leave out the same way they entered. Yes, there were feel good moments where people cried. Yes, there were times of dancing and "falling out" and finally there are time where altar calls are held and people come up for prayer, get a "touch" go back to their seats and then home to Sunday dinner. But what about the silent cries? The things done in secret? What about the things that people are afraid to tell and the church is afraid to talk about? If the "pink elephants" in the middle of the room are never addressed, how do we expect people to get truly healed and delivered so that they become FREE to be what God has called them to be?It's time for an inspection in the church It's time to closely look at the people who "Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and enter His courts with praise." this inspection includes the leaders and the members. If God were to do a SURPRISE INSPECTION of your life or church; what would He find?My hope is that by bringing a magnifying glass to some of the unchallenged, rarely addressed issues in the church; we as a Body will begin to deal with these hidden issues dead on and bring some for real healing to God's people.Come with me as we do a walk through INSPECTION IN THE HOUSE

Restoring your body, mind, and spirit amid change is an act of courage, empowerment, and hope. This warm, powerful guide will help you honor the changes and spaces in your life with purposeful rest and reflection. If you're trying to push your way through endings, beginnings, and places of uncertainty, only to find yourself more confused, disconnected, tired, and uncertain, this book will hold and fortify you. Yoga teacher and activist Octavia Raheem offers us the motivation and guidance we need to restore ourselves in the midst of all sorts of change. Change in our lives--whether it be welcome, joyful, challenging, or more subtle--presents us with the opportunity to pause and gather our energy to work with whatever lies ahead. Drawing wisdom from yoga philosophy and her many years of teaching experience, Raheem offers us the motivation and guidance we need to restore ourselves in the midst of all types of change. She gives us three simple restorative yoga poses (savasana, side lying pose, and child's pose), and offers short teachings, reflections, and practices to see us through times of ending, beginning, and liminal/transitional space. She shows us how slowing down, stillness, and deeper connection to our own transitions empower us to move through collective shifts with more grace--and what it means to navigate shifts and change with presence and courage.
The Tuesday Table Ladies have returned, with all the force of the winter blizzard that blankets their Active retirement community.Conversations at their Tuesday dinners are even more intense than usual as the friends begin to collaborate on a mystery novel and explore the intricacies of online dating. Real-life intervenes when a jewel thief burglarizes one of their neighbors and their friend Robert Symonds, a former foreign service officer, is suspected of murder. There is much speculation about the identity of the jewel thief, but the Tuesday Table Ladies are more than certain that the gossips are dead wrong. Meanwhile, Robert enlists their help in proving his innocence as the evidence tying him to the death of a mysterious Russian in a Washington D.C. hotel room begins to pile up.As Winter Comes moves to a conclusion, the three stories the jewel robbery, the murder in Washington, and the fictional thriller being written swirl around each other much like the blowing snow.
Concise, potent, poetic messages of inspiration, direction, and encouragement for you to embrace rest and reflection as a deep spiritual practice. In this compelling follow-up to her popular book, Pause, Rest, Be, Octavia F. Raheem offers succinct, gem-like teachings that invite us to find ways to embrace rest in our daily lives. Raheem posits that the most sustainable future is a well-rested one, and that rest isn't a luxury--it is a necessary spiritual practice available to us all. Raheem uses personal reflection, and creative, evocative "sutras" (or, just as aptly, aphorisms, threads, psalms, or proverbs) and inquiry to guide us toward a more well-rested present and future. The forty sutras fall into three categories: Rest as a place of refuge from the storms of life Rest as a place to remember who you are Rest as a place of revelation Rest Is Sacred invites the reader to reflect on our relationship to the grind culture and begin to see rest as a contemplative practice and way of life.
