Do it yourself sewing machine repair Sound like a far fetched idea? Not so, according to Reuben O. Doyle, a sewing machine repairman of 25 years and author of "Sewing Machine Repair For The Home Sewer". "In over 75% of the repair jobs I get, the home sewer/crafter could easily have handled the job if only they'd known what to look for. In about 25% of the repair jobs I go out on, the problem is such a minor one that anyone with a checklist of what to look for could fix it in seconds, but I have to charge them the same service fee as on any repair job. Of course any broken sewing machine parts need to be taken to an authorized service repairman for repair or replacement, but those types of service calls are by far the minority " "Sewing Machine Repair for the Home Sewer" is a book that is long overdue for anyone who owns a sewing machine. Written in step by step instructional style, it takes the machine owner through problem/solution scenarios allowing them to fix problems that can cause a lot of frustration for those who sew. Whether you have an older model machine, or one of the new computer models, this book will help keep your general repair costs to a minimum. The home sewer can now just look up the problem in this handy guide book and follow the instructions on how to fix it. YES, it's now as easy to fix your sewing machine as picking up a book

Loving and Hating Mathematics

Loving and Hating Mathematics

Mathematics is often thought of as the coldest expression of pure reason. But few subjects provoke hotter emotions--and inspire more love and hatred--than mathematics. And although math is frequently idealized as floating above the messiness of human life, its story is nothing if not human; often, it is all too human. Loving and Hating Mathematics is about the hidden human, emotional, and social forces that shape mathematics and affect the experiences of students and mathematicians. Written in a lively, accessible style, and filled with gripping stories and anecdotes, Loving and Hating Mathematics brings home the intense pleasures and pains of mathematical life. These stories challenge many myths, including the notions that mathematics is a solitary pursuit and a "young man's game," the belief that mathematicians are emotionally different from other people, and even the idea that to be a great mathematician it helps to be a little bit crazy. Reuben Hersh and Vera John-Steiner tell stories of lives in math from their very beginnings through old age, including accounts of teaching and mentoring, friendships and rivalries, love affairs and marriages, and the experiences of women and minorities in a field that has traditionally been unfriendly to both. Included here are also stories of people for whom mathematics has been an immense solace during times of crisis, war, and even imprisonment--as well as of those rare individuals driven to insanity and even murder by an obsession with math. This is a book for anyone who wants to understand why the most rational of human endeavors is at the same time one of the most emotional.

The Yemeni Jewish remnants have triggered so much interest on the part of so many western governments and humanitarian organizations, to an extent that is quite rare. The story of the Yemeni Jewish remnants is distinct from that of their brethren who emigrated to Israel during Operation Magic Carpet (1949-51). Before and during Operation Magic Carpet, Yemeni Jews came on their own in overwhelming numbers, many of them on foot, undeterred by the prospects of the trials and tribulations which they knew would await them in the course of their travels. In contrast, the Yemeni Jewish remnants displayed a strong hesitation, if not reluctance, to leave Yemen. Thus, since Operation Magic Carpet and until 1962 - the year of the coup d'état eliminating the autocratic Imamic regime in Yemen and the closing of the Yemeni gates for Jewish emigration - only some four hundred Yemeni Jews heeded the call to emigrate to Israel. It is for this reason that the book is subtitled Carpet Without Magic. A 'red carpet' was indeed spread before the Yemeni Jewish remnants, but the 'magic' was no longer there.

Cincinnati, at the close of the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Ogden's first three letters describe his personal adventures, while the rest add historical and geographical information. In 1827 Bullock landed at New Orleans then traveled up-river to Cincinnati. "...he purchased a large estate on the Kentucky side of the river, planning to make it his future home, and to lead thence a colony from England. Intent on this purpose he proceeded by way of Sandusky, Buffalo, and the Erie Canal to New York, whence he sailed for the mother country." There he published his journal of the trip, eventually bringing his family to America and settling on his estate. Dr. Josiah Gregg spent nine years crossing between the United States and New Mexico eight times as he led trading caravans far into the Mexican territory. During all these wanderings Gregg kept a journal of daily occurrences and at the urging of friends began contributing articles to various southwestern newspapers. These articles, which became a two-volume book, covered the status of the New Mexican provinces, the Santa Fe Trade before the closing of the Mexican customhouses in 1841, the customs and manners of the people and the resources of the country. His work mingles history, description and narrative. Several illustrations enhance the text.

Markham writes with indignant sympathy for the mass of the Yugoslav people, who for centuries have endured persecution from almost every national group in Europe and who face the steam roller of communism. To him, Tito and his Moscow-directed communism are not the salvation of Yugoslavia, as many have thought, but a deadly menace to Yugoslav prosperity and peace.A UNC Press Enduring Edition -- UNC Press Enduring Editions use the latest in digital technology to make available again books from our distinguished backlist that were previously out of print. Sociologists have long been curious about the ways in which city dwellers negotiate urban public space. How do they manage myriad interactions in the shared spaces of the city? In Urban Nightlife, sociologist Reuben May undertakes a nuanced examination of urban nightlife, drawing on ethnographic data gathered in a Deep South college town to explore the question of how nighttime revelers negotiate urban public spaces as they go about meeting, socializing, and entertaining themselves. May’s work reveals how diverse partiers define these spaces, in particular the ongoing social conflict on the streets, in bars and nightclubs, and in the various public spaces of downtown. To explore this conflict, May develops the concept of “integrated segregation”—the idea that diverse groups are physically close to one another yet rarely have meaningful interactions—rather, they are socially bound to those of similar race, class, and cultural backgrounds. May’s in-depth research leads him to conclude that social tension is stubbornly persistent in part because many participants fail to make the connection between contemporary relations among different groups and the historical and institutional forces that perpetuate those very tensions; structural racism remains obscured by a superficial appearance of racial harmony. Through May’s observations, Urban Nightlife clarifies the complexities of race, class, and culture in contemporary America, illustrating the direct influence of local government and nightclub management decision-making on interpersonal interaction among groups.
