Neo-Impressionism and Anarchism in Fin-de-Siècle France

Neo-Impressionism and Anarchism in Fin-de-Siècle France

Robyn Roslak

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2007
sidottu
In Neo-Impressionism and Anarchism in Fin-de-Siècle France, Robyn Roslak examines for the first time the close relationship between neo-impressionist landscapes and cityscapes and the anarchist sympathies of the movement's artists. She focuses in particular on paintings produced between 1886 and 1905 by Paul Signac and Maximilien Luce, the neo-impressionists whose fidelity to anarchism, to the art of landscape and to a belief in the social potential of art was strongest. Although the neo-impressionists are best known for their rational and scientific technique, they also heeded the era's call for art surpassing the mundane realities of everyday life. By tempering their modern subjects with a decorative style, they hoped to lead their viewers toward moral and social improvement. Roslak's ground-breaking analysis shows how the anarchist theories of Elisée Reclus, Pierre Kropotkin and Jean Grave both inspired and coincided with these ideals. Anarchism attracted the neo-impressionists because its standards for social justice were grounded, like neo-impressionism itself, in scientific exactitude and aesthetic idealism. Anarchists claimed humanity would reach its highest level of social and moral development only in the presence of a decorative variety of nature, and called upon progressive thinkers to help create and maintain such environments. The neo-impressionists, who primarily painted decorative landscapes, therefore discovered in anarchism a political theory consistent with their belief that decorative harmony should be the basis for socially responsible art.

Robyn M Holmes

SAGE Publications Inc

While there is an expanding literature of qualitative studies with children, there is relatively little in that literature that examines the fieldwork process with them. Author Robyn Holmes looks at fieldwork with children from a number of perspectives and helps to address the needs of researchers working with children. Holmes lays out an overview for the study of children in the early chapters, discussing basic methodology and considering the school as the primary site for studying children. In later chapters she closely examines how a researcher's personal attributes, such as gender and ethnicity can and do effect the fieldwork process with children. Straightforward and clear, Fieldwork with Children is a practical guide and will be an excellent resource for students and scholars involved in the study of children.

Weaving Innovations from the Bateman Collection

Weaving Innovations from the Bateman Collection

Schiffer Publishing Ltd

This full-color look at the patterns that Dr. William Bateman developed and studied over 50 years ago will help intermediate to advanced-level weavers think more innovatively about their craft. With hundreds of color draft diagrams and photos of Bateman's sample weaves, artists can experiment with his innovations on their own looms. Bateman, a chemistry professor turned weaver, analyzed traditional patterns and extended them in completely new directions. The samples included are Dr. Bateman's originals, and detail the yarns and setts he outlined in his documentation. The drafts are organized into weave groups, ranging from those with their origins in traditional structures like twill or overshot, to the one-of-a-kind new weaves Bateman invented. After she completed her monographs on the Bateman weaves, Virginia Harvey donated his nearly 1,500 samples to the Seattle Weavers' Guild. His original weaves, and the ways he manipulated more traditional weaves, form a fascinating resource for today's weavers.

The movement of Han Chinese into minority regions has been a long-standing pattern in China. However, China's minorities have taken longer to start moving in significant numbers and have now become part of a social change phenomenon, motivated by economic, social, and political factors. This book looks at how current changes in China are affecting the minority population. The case studies focus on how population shifts and the movement of China's minorities impact such issues as education, ethnic identity, the environment, local economy, labor, and regional development. Han-minority interactions within a number of regions are also examined.

Here to Help: NGOs Combating Poverty in Latin America
Over six billion dollars in developmental assistance is funneled annually through non-governmental organizations (NGOs), yet little is understood about the nature of their relationship with communities and the real impact of their work. This book examines what role NGOs really play in fighting poverty in Latin America. Expert NGO professionals and scholars explore grass-roots relationships between international religious and secular NGOs and poor communities. They probe the power structures, cultural assumptions, dangers and possibilities that underlie NGOs' work. While fighting poverty is the mission of many NGOs, most are aware that they often fail to make things better, and, in fact, may make things worse. By providing a forum for Northern and Southern NGOs, donors, scholars, and poor people themselves, this book explores the causes and cures of poverty, and presses at the boundaries of our understanding of participatory development. It identifies both internal and external factors that influence the success of NGO projects, and moves beyond standard best-practice theory to probe more deeply the relationships that underlie poverty and how these relationships can be shifted to achieve solutions.
