A murder staged as a railroad accident soon leads Acting Sheriff Robert Schwimer to the cold case shotgun death of a sociopath teenager. Before long he is investigating a series of murders and kidnappings, the disappearance of a prostitute and a serial arsonist, and he's exhuming the grave of a long dead rape suspect. Between the current sheriff's corruption scandal, the State Coroner fighting with the County Medical Examiner for control of the autopsy, plus too many suspects, Bob is racing across the Massachusetts South Shore to neutralize the killers before they neutralize him. Other works by Richard Howes: Praise for Julie Rayzor; "Crisp, fast-paced action novel... Writing style is very impressive... usually found in male adventures, yet his heroine is a woman in love... he pulls off the balancing act between realistic feminine energy and highly effective tough combat... Successfully blends all three genres: sci-fi, a love story, and a war story, and it works on all three levels... Great dialogue in this entertaining novel... Elmore Leonard type: short, character-revealing, and advancing the story conflict. And conflict is everywhere... I will not give away any secrets in the plot... I won't tell you about the train scenes, wow, you'll have to discover those yourself. I will say that the love story kicks in like an afterburner..." says John Hill, author and screenwriter of "Quigley Down Under", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (uncredited), "LA Law" and "Quantum Leap". "It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it." -Robert E. Lee With the exception of George Washington, perhaps the most famous general in American history is Robert E. Lee (January 19, 1807 - October 12, 1870), despite the fact he led the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia against the Union in the Civil War. As the son of U.S. Revolutionary War hero Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee III, and a relative of Martha Custis Washington, Lee was imbued with a strong sense of honor and duty from the beginning. And as a top graduate of West Point, Lee had distinguished himself so well before the Civil War that President Lincoln asked him to command the entire Union Army. Lee famously declined, serving his home state of Virginia instead after it seceded. Lee is remembered today for constantly defeating the Union's Army of the Potomac in the Eastern theater from 1862-1865, considerably frustrating Lincoln and his generals. His leadership of his army led to him being deified after the war by some of his former subordinates, especially Virginians, and he came to personify the Lost Cause's ideal Southern soldier. His reputation was secured in the decades after the war as a general who brilliantly led his men to amazing victories against all odds. Despite his successes and his legacy, Lee wasn't perfect. And of all the battles Lee fought in, he was most criticized for Gettysburg, particularly his order of Pickett's Charge on the third and final day of the war. Despite the fact his principle subordinate and corps leader, General James Longstreet, advised against the charge, Lee went ahead with it, ending the army's defeat at Gettysburg with a violent climax that left half of the men who charged killed or wounded. Although the Civil War came to define Lee's legacy, he was involved in some of American history's other turning points, including the Mexican-American War and the capture of John Brown. The World's Greatest Generals: The Life and Career of Robert E. Lee closely examines Lee's war records, but it also humanizes the cheerful husband who was raised and strove to be dignified and dutiful. Along with pictures of Lee and other important people and events in his life, you will learn about the great general like you never have before, in no time at all.
The Old West's Infamous Train Robbers and Their Historic Heists
What sort of person undertakes to rob a multi-ton train surging down a set of rails at high speed? For the Old West’s most famous outlaws, including Jesse James, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the Dalton Gang, and Black Jack Ketchum, it was as much about the thrill of the crime as the riches to be won, thumbing their noses at the authorities, and getting away with their crimes more often than not. These men, and at least one woman, were dare devils, rule breakers, adventurers, and rebels. In addition to their train robberies, they led colorful, dramatic, and dangerous lives. The Old West's Infamous Train Robbers and their Historic Heists profiles sixteen noted train robbers (or train robbing gangs) along with the details of each their forty-seven hold-ups. The mechanics of each of their train robberies—planning, execution, and escape—are dissected and discussed. Pertinent background information relating to each outlaw/gang is included as well as what became of them following their train robbery days.
