Little research had been conducted on Saek, a Tai-family language spoken by the Saek people of Laos and Thailand, until the preeminent linguist William J. Gedney began his exhaustive study of it in the 1960s. Never before published, Gedney’s field data on Saek are collected here, including a 550-page glossary and 450 pages of Saek oral literature presented in free translation and linear glosses. The volume concludes with two important, previously unpublished Gedney papers, “Saek Final-L: Archaism or Innovation?” and “The Twelve Year Names in Saek.” While William J. Gedney’s “The Saek Language” offers a particularly rich vein of primary data to specialists in comparative Tai, its texts—ranging from oral histories and descriptions of Saek life to folktales—are also of value to historians, anthropologists, and folklorists. Introductions contextualize the linguistic data for more general readers.
Spoken Arabic for English Speakers by Camilia Sadik
This is a college textbook, but it works for all ages and with or without a teacher. It is also a workbook. The author Camilia Sadik is a linguist; she teaches Arabic college courses to English speakers. Sadik is a native-Arabic speaker and she spent five long years dissecting Arabic and discovering the essential rules that govern Arabic words and letters. The vowels, consonants, and nine Arabic symbols are dissected. This book caters to the specific needs of English speakers. With the meticulous transliteration, students begin to speak Arabic from the first day of class. It contains 800+ cognates. The methodology is unique. No other methodology has 40+ original learning features in one program. It teaches sentence patterns, grouping of words, and conjugating of verbs. As a result, students learn a methodology to teach themselves to speak indefinitely. Each word is presented in four major Arabic dialects for students to choose their desired dialect. It is a class-tested approach, for all ages, and it works with or without a teacher. What's more is that the author dissected both Arabic and English; she teaches the structure of both languages in two different colleges in San Diego, California. You will also need to learn to read and write from The Arabic Alphabet for English Speakers by Camilia Sadik. A feast of the body and, above all, a feast of words, Sade's work continues to reach out to us through the fusions it creates. Philosophy? Pornography? Farce? Like Madame de Saint-Ange in her boudoir, Sade could exclaim: "I'm an amphibious animal. I love everything. I enjoy everything. I want to bring all genres together." In keeping with Sade's concern for totality, this book follows the biographical, literary and philosophical journey of a man imprisoned under all regimes, a victim of all despotisms, and who, through his laughter and his pen, knew how to frighten the supporters of "virtuous good causes," who recognize themselves by their desire to make a "clean sweep" of all the complexity and madness of the world.
