This book is devoted to shells, a natural or human construction, whose modelling as a structure was particularly developed during the 20th century, leading to current numerical models. Many objects, in industry or civil engineering, come under shell mechanics, so a good knowledge of their behaviour and modelling is essential to master their design. The book highlights the very strong link between the deformation of geometric surfaces and the mechanics of shells. The theory is approached in a general formulation that can apply to any surface, and the applications bring the concepts and the methods of resolution to practical situations. It aims to understand the behaviour of shells and to identify the most important parameters, thus allowing a good interpretation of the numerical results. The reader will be able, with finite element software, to reproduce the proposed solutions. The book is based on the knowledge acquired by the reader in structural mechanics and provides essential information on the geometry of surfaces. It is ideal for students in the fields of engineering using mechanics, as well as professionals wishing to deepen their knowledge of shells.
When Shellie the turtle falls out of the backyard fountain, she's thrilled by the chance to go on an adventure, but her family is worried that she's lost and has no idea where to start looking for her Shellie Goes on an Adventure is the first book in the Side -by -Side Books series. These unique books are formatted to tell the same story from two points of view: in this case from that of the adventurous turtle and of her very worried family.Side by Side Books are formatted to help children understand the perspectives of others, develop empathy, and grow their own emotional connection with others. These books are powerful tools for parents and educators to introduce young children to situations that change based on different perspectives. They provide an opportunity to discuss emotions, points of view, and differences in a fun way

Shell Shock, Memory, and the Novel in the Wake of World War I

Shell Shock, Memory, and the Novel in the Wake of World War I explores the narrative traces, subaltern faces, and commemorative spaces of shell shock in wartime and postwar novels by Mulk Raj Anand, Ford Madox Ford, Mary A. Ward, George Washington Lee, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Christopher Isherwood. This book argues that World War I novels serve as an untapped source of information about shell shock, and renews our present understanding of the condition by exploring the nexus of shell shock and practices of commemoration. Shell shock novelists testify to the tenaciousness and complexity of the disorder, write survivors into visibility, and articulate the immediacy of wounds that remain to be seen. This book helps readers understand more fully the extent to which shell shock continues to shape and trouble modern memories of the First World War.
Shell-Shock and Medical Culture in First World War Britain

Shell-Shock and Medical Culture in First World War Britain is a thought-provoking reassessment of medical responses to war-related psychological breakdown in the early twentieth century. Dr Loughran places shell-shock within the historical context of British psychological medicine to examine the intellectual resources doctors drew on as they struggled to make sense of nervous collapse. She reveals how medical approaches to shell-shock were formulated within an evolutionary framework which viewed mental breakdown as regression to a level characteristic of earlier stages of individual or racial development, but also ultimately resulted in greater understanding and acceptance of psychoanalytic approaches to human mind and behaviour. Through its demonstration of the crucial importance of concepts of mind-body relations, gender, willpower and instinct to the diagnosis of shell-shock, this book locates the disorder within a series of debates on human identity dating back to the Darwinian revolution and extending far beyond the medical sphere.

First published in 1940, this book was written by Charles S. Myers, who was Consulting Psychologist to the British Armies in France and the First World War. Based on a war diary, it explains the work he did in France and England for shell shock and shell concussion cases, and, as he writes, may well serve 'to re-enlighten the general public as to the nature of shell shock, and to convince them how dependent it is on previous history and inherited predisposition, on inadequate examination and selection of soldiers for the front line, on lack of proper discipline and esprit de corps; and how necessary it may be to adopt apparently harsh measures in order to diminish the undoubted contagiousness of the complaint.'
