The multicultural city of Pompeii and its ruins form the basis for Fattal's sculptural series investigating the history of displacementOver the last 50 years, Lebanese American artist Simone Fattal's (born 1942) multifaceted practice has explored the impact of displacement as well as the episteme of archeology and mythology, drawing from a range of sources including war narratives, landscape painting, ancient history and poetry. Inspired by her visit to the archeological sites of Pompeii, Fattal debuts a new body of sculpture and ceramics blending history with memory, grappling with the loss of time while revealing its repetitions. Says Fattal of Pompeii's significance, "the place has not been destroyed by time, but by a moment ... there are fragments of all periods mingled together ... Egypt is present, but also Syria and Asia Minor. But with all this diversity and differences, it seems that all lived together in harmony."

‘One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman,’ wrote Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986) in her controversial bestseller The Second Sex (1949), widely acclaimed as the founding book of modern feminism. Beauvoir lived through some of the most dramatic and harrowing events of the twentieth century, a time of huge change for women across the world. Ursula Tidd illuminates these and many other facets of Beauvoir's complex personality: her relentless autobiographical drive, living life as a continually unfolding narrative; her personal and intellectual relationships, essentially lived as a series of dialogues with a variety of interlocutors, including Jean-Paul Sartre and Nelson Algren; her active involvement in political struggles; and how Beauvoir the woman became Beauvoir the myth. This concise and up-to-date appraisal of the life and works of the quintessential feminist intellectual draws on the most recent scholarship on Beauvoir's work, and on newly published and extant volumes of her diaries and correspondence, to allow the reader unrivalled access to the voice of this pivotal modern figure.

Januar 1908 in Paris, Boulevard Montparnasse geboren.

Simone de Beauvoir: 50 Jahre Nach Dem «Anderen Geschlecht»
Simone Weil (1909-1943) Receptions and Actuality, Part 1
Rereading Simone Weil today, now that her work has been published in its entirety and has been the subject of numerous in-depth studies, is a difficult task. Specially, when one considers that her philosophical and methodological approach is difficult to determine. Weil draws on the thinking of various philosophers, not blindly, but always with a certain distance, and therefore does not belong to any philosophical school, just as her faith does not belong to any denomination. In the following two volumes, we chose to approach Weil's work by focusing on two aspects of her work: the physical and spiritual needs. The first part of the publication explores the continuing relevance of Simone Weil's social and political ideas, while the second part highlights her legacy in ethical theory, aesthetics, mathematics, and her contribution to an open, non-denominational spirituality. The diversity of the essays clearly demonstrates the enduring inspiration that Weil's work provides for philosophers of all kinds, or, as Gustave Thibon once puts it, a 'light for the mind and nourishment for the soul' for those who are ready to receive it.
Simone Weil (1909-1943) Receptions and Actuality, Part 2
The second part of the volume, dedicated to the reception and actuality of Simone Weil's philosophy, explores its impact in the fields of ethical theory, aesthetics, mathematics, and religious thought. More specifically, the essays examine the concepts of empathy, obedience, (in)attentiveness, and nourishment as defined by Weil, as well as the reception and influence of her work in art and literature.
Simone Bergmann: Isle of Wight
Never-before-published photographs of the legendary, raucous and record-breaking 1970 music festival often dubbed the Woodstock of England In August 1970, Hamburg photographer Simone Bergmann traveled to the Isle of Wight off the coast of Great Britain for its annual music festival. The lineup was a music-lover's dream: Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Who, Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Miles Davis, Kris Kristofferson, Supertramp, Procol Harum, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Chicago all performed among dozens of other acts. An estimated 600,000 to 700,000 people were in attendance. The festival was periodically disrupted by spectators from "Desolation Row," the area immediately behind the double fencing, who demanded that the event have free admission. It was not until the last day that the organizers yielded to the pressure. Bergmann photographed this conflict, while also capturing the unique and--to our eyes--almost anachronistic moment of "public happiness," as Hannah Arendt called it.
