Stan, a retired trucker who cares for little but fishing and beer, and Rose live in a community on the Jersey shore. Another hurricane, Wilene, even worse than Sandy, rips through, carries away Stan's garage and his boat inside. Stan and his truck barely escape. He drives to his daughter and son-in-law's place, inland. Stan considers the recent disaster and becomes aware for the first time of climate change issues. He decides Rose and he must ultimately move away from the beach to a safer region and reform their lifestyles to reduce their environmental footprint. Rose resists, straining the marriage. Stan visits Carlo, a former fishing buddy, far out on Long Island. A brutal blizzard comes through, resulting in a disaster. In the aftermath, Stan finds himself inheriting Carlo's 5 mongrels. He returns to Rose at their shore place, but shortly leaves again, with the dogs, to visit another fisherman friend, Manny, in the Poconos. A rain/wind storm comes through. Another weather disaster. Manny's man-hungry sister targets Stan. Home again, still with the dogs, Stan and Rose fight, and he leaves yet again, this time heading down through Virginia into Tennessee, where his truck is stolen and a tornado destroys it. He gets Nashville TV coverage. On the way home, a brutal cold snap hits. Rose tells Stan he is a magnet for storms and extreme weather. He's convinced climate change is responsible. How will he be able to bring Rose around?
Comic book legend Stan Lee's life was always an open book. The co-creator of some of the greatest superheroes and most beloved stories of all time, Lee-who passed away on November 12 at the age of 95-became just as mythical and larger-than-life as the characters in the panels. In 2015, around the time of Marvel's 75th anniversary, Lee had the idea to reflect on his own life, as he said, "in the one form it has never been depicted, as a comic book ... or if you prefer, a graphic memoir." The result, published by the Touchstone imprint of Simon & Schuster in 2015, was Amazing Fantastic Incredible: A Marvelous Memoir-which was written by Lee with Peter David and features artwork by cartoonist and illustrator Colleen Doran. Here are 117 things we learned about Lee.
The 'Stan is a collection of short comics about America's longest war. The tales in this book--based on reporting by David Axe and Kevin Knodell and drawn by artist Blue Delliquanti—are all true and took place in roughly the first decade of the U.S. military intervention in Afghanistan. While the stories are from the recent past, The 'Stan is still very much about Afghanistan's, and America's, present. And likely future.
Emerging readers will love the story of Ben and his friend Stan, who is very shy This charming, illustrated tale has carefully leveled text and includes a reading comprehension activity.
In "Spider Stan, the Music Man," Stan tells us that the "cool Spides" make fun of him as he plays in his band, or dances to the music he loves. This makes him feel sad, not just because making fun of him is a type of bullying, but also he wants to share his joy of music and dance with everyone, including the "cool Spides."
The mostly true tale of Stan Lee, the one and only Godfather of Comics. From his childhood in Depression-era New York, to transforming Marvel into the number one comics publisher in the world, to his 21st-century reinvention as Chief Creative Officer of global entertainment company POW! Entertainment, Stan “the Man” Lee stands the test of time as the most legendary name in comicbook history. Stanley Lieber began working at Timely Comics in 1940 at the age of 17 and found himself at the helm of the bullpen as its top editor just two years later. But it wasn’t until 1961 that he ignited a revolution known as the “Marvel Age of Comics.” With a legendary stable of art partners including Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, John Romita, and Jim Steranko, Lee unleashed a dizzying cascade of seminal comicbook creations—the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, the X-Men, and the Avengers to name a few. After moving to Hollywood in 1980, he did it again, developing TV and film projects that laid the groundwork for the “Marvel movie.” Stan’s constant cameo presence in these billion-dollar worldwide events was a testament to his influence. As the man behind POW! Entertainment, he became a master of all media—working with rock stars and professional sports leagues, movie mavens and reality TV shows—reinforcing his creative stature the world over. First published as a signed Collector’s Edition and sold out within a week, the book was written and edited with Lee himself. His tale is told by his successor at Marvel, renowned comics writer, editor, and historian Roy Thomas, who brings “you are there” insights and wide-eyed clarity to key moments of Lee’s journey to pop culture immortality. Featuring hundreds of treasures of comicbook art, intimate photographs sourced straight from his family archives, a foreword written by Lee himself, a novel-length essay and new epilogue by Thomas, and an appendix with complete reprints of Stan’s comics from throughout the decades, this is a titanic tribute worthy of the Man.
