First Published in 1995. Throughout the nineteenth century the entire structure of the Ashkenazi world crumbled. What remains of Ashkenazi Jewry today is split into irreconcilable religious camps on the one hand, and a large body of secularized Jews of greater or lesser ethnicity on the other. The Sephardi and Oriental Jews, who form the other great branch of world Jewry, had a very different encounter with the forces of modernity. This book examines some of their responses to its challenges. The Sephardi religious leaders, who had been historically more open to general culture, reacted with neither the anti-traditionalism of Reform Judaism nor the Ashkenazi ultra-Orthodox 's uncompromising rejection of everything new. Their response was rather one of active and creative halakhic engagement coupled with a tolerant attitude toward the growing secularized elements of their communities. Much has been written on the social, economic, and political transformation of Sephardi and Oriental Jewry in the modem era. However, this is the first book in English devoted to the religious changes taking place in this important segment of Jewry which now constitutes the majority of Jews in the Jewish state.
Celebrations of literary fictions as autonomous worlds appeared first in the Renaissance and were occasioned, paradoxically, by their power to remedy the ills of history. Robert E. Stillman explores this paradox in relation to Philip Sidney's Defence of Poesy, the first Renaissance text to argue for the preeminence of poetry as an autonomous form of knowledge in the public domain. Offering a fresh interpretation of Sidney's celebration of fiction-making, Stillman locates the origins of his poetics inside a neglected historical community: the intellectual elite associated with Philip Melanchthon (leader of the German Reformation after Luther), the so-called Philippists. As a challenge to traditional Anglo-centric scholarship, his study demonstrates how Sidney's education by Continental Philippists enabled him to dignify fiction-making as a compelling form of public discourse-compelling because of its promotion of powerful new concepts about reading and writing, its ecumenical piety, and its political ambition to secure through natural law (from universal 'Ideas') freedom from the tyranny of confessional warfare. Intellectually ambitious and wide-ranging, this study draws together various elements of contemporary scholarship in literary, religious, and political history in order to afford a broader understanding of the Defence and the cultural context inside which Sidney produced both his poetry and his poetics.

Upon arrival in San Antonio he tarred, visiting with Adolph Douai, editor of the San Antonio Zeitung.From San Antonio, Stillman ventured west as far as the Pecos River in the company of an army wagon train along the newly-opened road from San Antonio to El Paso. He penetrated unsettled areas, risking Indian attack to see first-hand the "wilds" of Texas.. . .the water was now over the whole ground, and by floundering and swimming we reached the margin of the first slough. Here the flood had taken a shortcut . . . Shouts of distress were heard in the rear, when presently Antonio's mule came swimming past without his rider.Wilderness flash floods, rough rides over long and muddy roads, and periodic residences in poorly-constructed log houses did not deter his romantic spirit. He carefully recorded his observations regarding the settlers and their surroundings, the botanical wonders and curiosities, and Indian conflicts.Stillman wrote extensively concerning his travels, both in Texas and California during the gold rush period. He published essays in The Overland Monthly, and in 1877 published his memoirs, Seeking the Golden Fleece, a Record of Pioneer Life in California. Three books were published in the 1960s and 1970s containing his diaries and letters concerning his California experiences.
