Naked Angels

Naked Angels

John Tytell

Ivan R Dee, Inc
2006

Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs—their emergence in the late 1950s as the leading figures of the Beat movement marked one of the most spectacular developments in post-World War II American literature. John Tytell's classic study examines their attempt to redefine a complacent society's notion of sanity and normalcy and to reinvent their own lives through jazz, drugs, and law-breaking, acts that ultimately led to new forms of expression. A fascinating blend of literary and social criticism, history, and biography, Naked Angels is an indispensable introduction to the lives and work of these seminal figures, and an unsurpassed look at the powerful influence they had on the 1960s and beyond.

"It all started ten years ago in July 2007 when I was teaching my daughter Autumn Elise how to paint in my studio. I didn't want to be totally enthralled by my own painting, which requires my full focus and attention to detail to the lighting effects of a still-life painting. I needed to paint something quick and meaningful. I got inspired to paint a midtorso of two bodies coming together unclothed. That exploration was incredible. I discovered how I was able to see movement and energy like never before. That painting is called UNTITLED. At the end of the day, I was completely able to teach Autumn how to hold a brush in many different ways, to achieve flow, blend colors, and add depth with her subjects. We had great success, so much so that her first paintings were accepted in an art show, along with some of my first attempts at abstract painting."

Rock and Roll, Social Protest, and Authenticity
This book explores the relationships between rock and roll, social protest, and authenticity to consider how rock and roll could function as social protest music. The author begins by discussing the nature and origins of rock and roll and the nature of social protest and social protest music within the wider context of the evolution of the commercial music industry and the social and technological infrastructure developed for the mass dissemination of popular music. This discussion is followed by an examination of the causes of the public disapproval originally expressed toward rock and roll, and how they illuminate its social protest and subversive quality. By further investigating the nature of authenticity and its relationship to social protest and to commercialization, the author considers how social protest and commercialization are antithetical. This conclusion, if correct, has broad implications for human culture in advanced industrial society.
