This unique collection of pictorial materials and illustrations relates to Benjamin Wills Newton (1807-1899). He was an evangelical Christian leader and expositor who at times ministered to large congregations in England in the nineteenth century. He was a prolific writer. This book includes portraits of him and his family, and a variety of memorabilia. It gives examples of his letter-writing and of his editing of books. It shows how, after his death, his written records were preserved by his private secretary, Frederick Wyatt, and his colporteur, Alfred Fry. It also gives pictures and brief accounts of some of his close associates in the later stages of his ministry. It is located on the southwestern side of the state boarding the Delaware River. Settlers from England were showing up to this area and settling both sides of the Delaware River as early as the 17th century. Wills are one of the go to records or research tools that the family historian love to get their hands on due to the various family members being mentioned within. These records cover the time frame 1831-1860 and picks up where the first volume ends with its years covering 1804-1830.
Originally published in 1981, this book took a position which was unpopular within the academic establishment at the time of its publication. It argued that the extraordinary social and economic changes that came over South Africa in the 20th Century gave the country great stability. The authors believed that change would come from within the ruling white oligarchy rather than from Liberation Movements and that the greatest solvent of apartheid was to be found in the working of a free market economy. The book provided novel data for sociological, political and strategic reassessment of South Africa. The approach was unusual in that the book represented neither a conventional defence of apartheid nor one of the customary attacks on South Africa.
