This commentary will appeal particularly to those familiar with Professor Soggin's Introduction to the Old Testament and History of Israel who would prefer an alternative to the parallel work by J. L. Mays in the Old Testament Library. Written with the verve that the author brings to his other commentaries on Joshua and Judges, it offers a new translation of the text of Amos accompanied by two types of comment: first comes a critical philological account which justifies the rendering of the text adopted, and then, in a style familiar from the Old Testament Library, the main body of the commentary.

Dupa absolvirea Facultatii de Filozofie a Universitatii Ebraice din Ierusalim revine in kibbutz, unde practica agricultura si preda la liceul local pana in 1986, cand se muta cu familia in orasul Arad. Primul sau volum de povestiri, Acolo unde urla sacalii, apare in 1965, fiind urmat de romanul "Altundeva poate" (1966).In 1967 lupta in Razboiul de Sase Zile, iar in 1973 participa la Razboiul de Yom Kippur. Dupa succesul international al romanului "Sotul meu, Michael" (1968)- Humanitas Fiction, scriitorul continua sa publice carti de fictiune. Opera sa este tradusa in peste 40 de limbi. The plan of this volume of commentary on the New English Bible text of three Old Testament books follows the pattern established by the New Testament series of Cambridge Bible Commentaries on the New English Bible. The main divisions of the text are those provided by the New English Bible itself. The text is further subdivided for the purposes of the commentary, which is printed in short sections following the relevant portion of text. In his introduction Dr McKeating discusses the chronology of the books in this volume, indicating briefly the historical events of the period. He examines the structure and content of these books and shows how these three men, alike in their intensity but utterly different in background and in temperament, reflect three different attitudes to a corrupt society.

This learned volume offers a close reading of chapters 3 to 6 of the book of Amos, and attempts to locate biblical study and theological reflection within the complex cultural context of Latin America. The author prefaces his study with a wide-ranging survey of the continuing debate over the proper use of the Bible as a model for the structures of society. The author's particular focus is Latin America, and through sociological and textual analysis, he seeks to define the role of the prophetic biblical voice in this society and presses for a recognition of moral complexities and a constant questioning and self-evaluation from those who would claim to speak for God in society.

Many studies of the prophetic books assume that a text's addressee and audience are one and the same. Sometimes this is the case, but some prophetic texts feature multiple addressees who cannot be collapsed into a single setting. In this book Andrew R. Davis examines examples of multiple addressees within the book of Amos and argues that they force us to expand our understanding of prophetic audiences. Drawing insight from studies of poetic address in other disciplines, Davis distinguishes between the addressee within the text and the actual audience outside the text.
