Values of Harry Potter: Lessons for Muggles, Expanded Edition
The adventure stories of the boy wizard Harry Potter tap life's most pressing questions about love and values, evil, free will, and the soul. Ari Armstrong's Values of Harry Potter explores the complex themes of J. K. Rowling's beloved novels, illuminating the heroic fight for life-promoting values, the hero's need for independence, and the role of choice in virtue. Drawing on the ideas of Aristotle and Ayn Rand, Armstrong then critiques the Christian elements of self-sacrifice and immortality, arguing that they ultimately clash with the essential nature of the hero as exemplified by Harry Potter and his allies. Values of Harry Potter offers a unique, succinct, and provocative look at Rowling's revolutionary novels for both enthusiasts and critics. This Expanded Edition also reviews the novels' psychology, government, and news media.
What's Wrong with Ayn Rand's Objectivist Ethics
"An engaging discussion and critique of Rand's metaethics and ethics. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Rand." -Jason Brennan (When All Else Fails, Against Democracy) Ayn Rand bases her morality of selfish egoism on a flawed conception of value, argues Ari Armstrong in What's Wrong with Ayn Rand's Objectivist Ethics. Values are not, as Rand has it, inherently oriented to an organism's survival, either for people or for living things broadly. Rather, people experience certain things as ends in themselves and value some things (such as having and raising children) for reasons other than to advance their survival. Although Rand and her advocates seek to make sense of the biology of values, the nature of human life, ends in themselves, happiness, and moral virtues, ultimately their efforts do not rescue Rand's theory. Further, Rand's theory cannot adequately explain why a person should consistently respect others' rights, avoid free riding, and engage civically. Armstrong, long an Objectivist before concluding that Rand's moral theory has intractable problems, proposes an alternate way to conceive of a person's ultimate value, one that recognizes many of Rand's insights while making more room for the interests of others. The book offers insights and challenges for those who are new to Rand's ideas as well as to those who have long studied Rand's philosophy. The work dives deeply into the literature on Rand's moral theory, for those interested, with detailed notes and an extensive appendix exploring major works on the topic. The book includes the following chapters: 1. Ayn Rand's Selfishness2. Reviewing the Objectivist Ethics3. The Essential Fallacies of Rand's Ethics4. The Error in Rand's Biology5. Values, Life, and Death6. Robots, Man Qua Man, and the Choice to Live7. Egoism and Rights8. Egoists, Free Riders, and Charity9. Rethinking the Ultimate ValueAppendix: The Literature on Rand's Moral Theory Ari Armstrong is the author of Reclaiming Liberalism and Values of Harry Potter, and he publishes the Colorado Freedom Report. He has written for such publications as the Colorado Sun and the Objective Standard and appeared on television and radio programs including CNN, Denver's 9News, and Devil's Advocate. Ari was the recipient of the Modern Day Sam Adams award and the Independence Institute's Vern Bickel Award for Grassroots Leadership, and he was a finalist for the Hoiles Prize for regional journalism. Coste's life and works. Born in 1805 as the son of an officer in the Napoleonic army, Coste went to Delfzijl, Holland with his father as a child of 8. In 1813 the French withdrew from this fortress, passing the Zuiderzee and the Rhine. Later, he would dedicate his Souvenirs to these places. He grew up in Valenciennes, where he already developed musical activities. In December 1828 he settled in Paris and made his career, giving concerts, lessons and composing. He studied harmony and counterpoint with Sor. As a member of the Soci t acad mique des Enfants d'Apollon he played in its concerts, most notably in 1843 with his Le Tournoi in the Salle du Conservatoire. He also became a member of the Freemasons lodge and participated in a concert in 1852. He entered his most important works in the Makaroff guitar competition in Brussels in 1856, where he took second prize with Grande S r nade. Back in Paris he continued his activities but had to take an administrative job in order to support himself. He married his pupil Louise Olive Pauilh in 1871, after the German invasion. He injured his left shoulder in 1873, just as he had in 1863. Nevertheless he continued to give concerts up to 1880, when he could no longer play due to the extreme cold that winter. A year later he was struck by a 'cerebral congesture'. He died on 14 January 1883 and was buried at the Cimeti re de Montmartre. This biography is the retail edition of the narrative part of the English translation of Ari van Vliet's dissertation upon the subject, which is reviewed as such: "...which must be the definitive work on the influential and important French composer." - Classical Guitar, Summer 2016 "... impressive two-volume tome... detailed, heavily illustrated biography, extensive analysis of 45 of his works for solo guitar." - Classical Guitar, Winter 2016 "It is the magisterial modern biography that Napol on Coste and the guitar have deserved." - Soundboard Scholar, 2017 The CD mentioned in the book is no longer included. On Election night, there is no clear winner, and the next day, even with 100% of the precincts reporting, the results are too close to call. This time the recount is in Ohio, and after several tedious weeks, The Supreme Court hands Ohio to the Democrats, thereby making the Republican incumbent a one-term President. A month later, the Congress, Cabinet and Supreme Court gather at the Capitol to hear the State of the Union. Only two of the nation's top leaders are not present, the newly appointed Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, James Jimmy Hunter who is attending his daughter's wedding, and the Secretary of Transportation, Clarence Wilson, the only Republican in the Cabinet. According to tradition, one cabinet member is left behind as a precaution for the continuity of government in the event of a disaster. Secretary Wilson thus escapes the fate of the rest of the Cabinet when a terrorist attack kills everyone at the Capitol, leaving him the new President of the United States. AMERICA FIRST is an action packed story of terrorism, treason, a Red State / Blue State civil war, and an investigation that leads into the highest political offices in the land. Originally written as a screenplay, on the morning of January 22, 2017, two days after Trump's Inauguration, Hollywood producer Ari Newman quickly adapted AMERICA FIRST. It became the first book to be both written and published after Donald Trump became President of the United States.

Hard Cover Update 24 November 2022 Over the coming months this First Edition Hard Cover will be the only way to buy the original text of Mrs. Vanderbilt. Ari Newman is now modernizing and re-writing the book which will first be released on MrVanderbilt.com. Thereafter, the new Mrs. Vanderbilt will be featured in Kindle, Soft Cover, and Hard. In describing this Newman writes, "One point of great gratitude I must express is to someone I do not even know. In fact, this person, A. Kracht, gave a horrible yet very helpful review on Amazon when Volume 1 initially came out. In the movie business, like the TV industry, we test market products and can make some changes before a film's release. In Television, the "pilot" is used for this purpose and the genesis of some very successful shows are pilots that are radically different from a show's eventual run. As a film producer I was trained and therefore as a writer viewed comments about Volume 1 in the same manner - a great gift. Receiving feedback and altering the material accordingly can be, and has been for me, a rewarding experience and several great life lessons. I often think of the difference between the Seinfeld pilot and the show being a major hit as a prime example. In this respect, Volume 2 is written completely differently than Volume 1 and I think the book and the commercial product itself is better for it. So thank you to my anonymous reviewer and all those who gave comments." IntroductionIn the summer of 1895, at the height of the Gilded Age, Newport, Rhode Island was the summer playground of American nobility. Three young and beautiful heiresses from rival families struggle to define their place within the House of Vanderbilt, balancing love, birthright, and responsibility to their respective families with their own hopes and desires. Each has the potential to attain the prize---the mantle of MRS. VANDERBILT, the "American Queen".-Twenty year old Gertrude, daughter of the current "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and Cornelius Vanderbilt II, is torn between her sexuality and her parents' insistence that she be properly married to a man who will add social status to their ruling branch of the House of Vanderbilt. -Gertrude's first cousin Consuelo, daughter of Alva Vanderbilt and William K. Vanderbilt, is being forced into a loveless marriage with England's Duke of Marlborough. Alva believes that if Consuelo is the first American to become a European Duchess, both she and her branch of the Vanderbilt family will attain status equal to her nemesis, the reigning Mrs. Vanderbilt, and her longtime adversary, the current "Queen" of High Society, Mrs. Caroline Astor.-Gertrude's brother Neily Vanderbilt has been in love with Grace, of the House of Astor, since they were teenagers. Several years earlier, as the most sought after debutante, she was secretly engaged to Neily's older brother, William Vanderbilt heir apparent, who died while studying at Yale. Mrs. Vanderbilt threatens Neily, the next in line that marrying an Astor would mean giving up his birthright, along with the social status and the riches that would make him one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the world. As the families' matriarchs and patriarchs rule and manipulate the lives of their offspring to achieve their own aims, their children will be forced to choose between love and independence or status and wealth. Seen through the eyes of an eighteen year old lady's maid, and written in the second person, the time-honored stories of these young women, their suitors and lovers, secrets and betrayals, are told through a fictional author who uses alternate history to share their struggles and pain with empathy and insight.

KTVN Channel 2 Reno, NV, February 2020"That's just the way he is. It's more narcissism than anything else." U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham"The evidence of Trump's narcissism is overwhelming-indeed, it would be a gargantuan task to try to marshal all of it, especially as it mounts each and every day." George Conway, Attorney & Founder of The Lincoln Project, The Atlantic October 2019"Trump gave a eulogy at his father's funeral...and used the time to talk about his own accomplishments and to make it clear that, in his mind, his father's best achievement was producing him, Donald." Alex Morris, Rolling Stone, April 2017"It's just astonishing that this man is President of the United States. The man, the con man, from New York City. Many bankruptcies, failed businesses, a reality show, that branded him as something that he never was - a successful businessman." Steve Schmidt, Noted Conservative Political Strategist & Founder of The Lincoln Project, MSNBC June 2020"This book is not political in the sense of promoting a specific politician, party, or policy. Rather, its purpose is to raise issues concerning the fragility of American democracy. Other than Oman, San Marino, and Morocco, the American government is the oldest continuous political and government system in the world today. Perhaps a page one re-write of the constitution is needed and that constitutional conventions should be at the nucleus of this continued endeavor." Roman law is justly famous, but what was its relationship to governing an empire? In this book, Ari Z. Bryen argues that law, as the learned practice that we know today, emerged from the challenge of governing a diverse and fractious set of imperial subjects. Through analysis of these subjects' political and legal ideologies, Bryen reveals how law became the central topic of political contest in the Roman Empire. Law offered a means of testing legitimacy and evaluating government, as well as a language for asking fundamental political questions. But these political claims did not go unchallenged. Elites resisted them, and jurists, in collaboration with emperors, reimagined law as a system that excluded the voices of the governed. The result was to separate, for the first time, 'law' from 'society' more broadly, and to define law as a primarily literate and learned practice, rather than the stuff of everyday life.
