After the birth of the Protestant ecumenical movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and following the first great wave of universal Christian ecumenism in the 1960s and 1970s after the Second Vatican Council, prominent theologians of nearly every ecclesial tradition charted new territory in the last decades of the twentieth century. They crossed boundaries within their own ecclesial traditions and built bridges to other Christian churches--churches that were once excluded from fellowship. In the development of these new programs of ecumenical theology, the theologians redefined their own confessional identities and, in many cases, crossed the liberal-conservative divide within their own traditions. This volume introduces this fascinating dynamic of theological mediation, redefinition, and generosity. It shows how the ecumenical impulses, which were directed outwardly to other traditions, had reflexive effects inwardly. Working in the realms of both historical and systematic theology, the essays in this volume provide a critical analysis of the history of this general theological sentiment and offer an outlook for its future.
The first comprehensive treatment of the air wars in Vietnam.Filling a substantial void in our understanding of the history of airpower in Vietnam, this book provides the first comprehensive treatment of the air wars in Vietnam. Brian Laslie traces the complete history of these air wars from the beginning of American involvement until final withdrawal. Detailing the competing roles and actions of the air elements of the United States Army, Navy, and Air Force, the author considers the strategic, operational, and tactical levels of war. He also looks at the air war from the perspective of the North Vietnamese Air Force. Most important for understanding the US defeat, Laslie illustrates the perils of a nation building a one-dimensional fighting force capable of supporting only one type of war.
As Christians, we claim that we are not of this world, don't we? We are citizens of the Kingdom of God, according to our Bibles. Are we aware of how deep this world has sunk its fingers into our lives, hampering our spiritual growth? Are we aware of all the intricate ways we've been programmed to think and behave? In this short book, Brian Reynolds explores how the Body of Christ must commit to a first step, in order to remove a particular burden that this world has placed upon we who are Ambassadors of Christ. This book shines a light upon our innermost parts, to expose where the world still takes hold. There are obvious tactics deployed by the enemy, designed to keep us sunk in the mire of this world. This book isn't designed to point out the obvious. Instead, "Out of the Mire" examines a subtle tactic that we take for granted, subconsciously separating us from the Father's commandments. Producer of the "Supernatural Truth in Christ" website and author of "Kingdom of Darkness in a Fallen World," Brian will force you to examine the extent of your separation from this world; mixing life experience with scriptural references, a conversational writing style, and an eye for identifying tactics used by Satan. In these pages you'll discover: -How the world is used by the enemies of God -How the world is used against the Saints -Why the world tampers with the 2nd greatest commandment -How Christian prayers are hindered by the world -What needs to be done to revive attributes of God into the lives of the Saints What will it take for the Body of Christ to be lifted up and out of the mire of this world? Prayers for strength? If you're looking to take an active role to find out, "Not of this World: Out of the Mire" is for you. Here are some quotes found within the pages of this book: "All of those unseen forces have spared no expense to create a worldly system. A system which compels us to live in a manner that is against the Word of God." From chapter two, "Arise O Sleeper." "It only takes a small amount to leaven the whole lump. However, if the leaven takes tens, hundreds, or thousands of years to take effect, chances are it would go unnoticed until the whole lump is pregnant with said leaven." Quoted from chapter three, "Satanic Leaven." "And when we understand that the cares of this world are designed to choke the Word from our hearts, we can look forward and see that the solutions of this world are to compromise us against the Word of God." Quoted from chapter five, "Loving Not our Lives."
Montanans' football obsession goes far beyond storied college programs. From Baker to Zurich, even the tiniest towns in Montana have sent players to the NFL. One of the most dominant offensive linemen of the 1940s was Anaconda's own Francis Cope, who earned All-Decade honors as a New York Giant. Elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991, MSU alum Jan Stenerud was the league's first soccer-style kicker. Pat Donovan, who earned a Super Bowl ring with the Dallas Cowboys in the 1970s, was named by Sports Illustrated as the fourth-greatest Montana athlete of the twentieth century. Griz Doug Betters was a member of the Miami Dolphins' famed Killer Bees and the 1983 NFL defensive player of the year. From the obscure to the prominent, author Brian D'Ambrosio celebrates Big Sky Country's rich connections with America's favorite professional sports league.
Treasure State stars Gary Cooper and Myrna Loy found unparalleled success during the Golden Age of Hollywood. For more than a century, Montana has supplied a rich vein of entertainment and personality--from daredevils to dancers and even mimes. Born in Miles City in 1895, comedian Gilbert "Pee Wee" Holmes played sidekick to such stars as Tom Mix. One-time Butte resident Julian Eltinge went on to become America's first famous female impersonator. There was Taylor Gordon, whose golden voice propelled the son of a slave from White Sulphur Springs to Harlem Renaissance fame.
