Reading the Novel in English 1950 - 2000

Brian W. Shaffer

Reading the Novel in English 1950–2000; “This is an excellent introductory study. The selection of texts is intriguing. The volume is well-informed by criticism of the field and Shaffer’s close reading is exemplary. His interpretations cast fresh light on some novels that have become canonical and therefore this study is of great use to students generally and for those teaching them.” Philip Tew, University College Northampton; Director, UK Network for Modern Fiction Studies Written in clear, jargon-free prose, this introductory text charts the variety of English-language novel writing in the second half of the twentieth century. It focuses equally on British and Irish novelists, and on Anglophone novelists from other countries (exclusive of the US). The text provides students both with strategies for interpretation and with fresh readings of ten influential novels. It maps out the most important contexts and concepts for understanding the fiction of the period, considering subjects such as the aftermath of literary modernism and the end of the British Empire. Novels discussed in depth include Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Kazuo Ishiguro’s Remains of the Day, and Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. The author treats the English-language novel of this period as a socially-engaged and exploratory genre, one that challenges and stretches the prevailing canons of knowledge and literary representation in its bid to depict and probe an evolving present.

The Framing Text in Early Modern English Drama

The Framing Text in Early Modern English Drama

Though individual prologues and epilogues have been treated in depth, very little scholarship has been published on early modern framing texts as a whole. The Framing Text in Early Modern English Drama fills a gap in the literature by examining the origins of these texts, and investigating their growing importance and influence in the theatre of the period. This topic-led discussion of prologues and epilogues deals with the origins of these texts, the difficulty of definition, and the way in which many prologues and epilogues appear to interact on such subjects as the composition of the theatre audience and the perceived place of women in such an audience. Author Brian Schneider also examines the reasons for, and the evidence leading to, the apparently sudden burgeoning of these texts after the Restoration, when prologues and epilogues grace nearly all the dramas of the time and become a virtual cottage industry of their own. The second section-a comprehensive list of prologues and epilogues-details play titles, playwrights, theatres and theatre companies, first performance and the earliest edition in which the framing text(s) appears. It quotes the first line of the prologue and/or epilogue and uses the printer's signature to denote the page on which the texts can be found. Further information is provided in notes appended to the relevant entry. A final section deals with 'free-floating' and 'free-standing' framing texts that appear in verse collections, manuscripts, and other publications and to which no play can be positively ascribed. Combining original analysis with carefully compiled, comprehensive reference data, The Framing Text in Early Modern English Drama provides a genuinely new angle on the drama of early modern England.
Supervision Essentials for the Integrative Developmental Model

Supervision Essentials for the Integrative Developmental Model

Some clinicians use a simple master-apprentice approach to supervision others utilize tools from their preferred model of psychotherapy. In this warm and engaging text, Brian W. McNeil and Cal D. Stoltenberg offer supervisors and trainees a different approach: their integrated developmental model of supervision. This empirically-tested model incorporates elements of cognitive models, schema development, skill development, interpersonal influence, and social intelligence alongside models of human development to create a truly eclectic and well-regarded approach to clinical supervision. The authors describe a proven supervisory model of tracking therapists amp rsquo development across all skill levels and theoretical orientations. Students and trainees are evaluated across domains including intervention skills competence, assessment techniques, client conceptualization, individual differences, theoretical orientation, treatment plans and goals, and professional ethics. The authors provide clear guidelines for supervisee progression, from the initial levels-highly motivated trainees who are highly dependent on the supervisor-to more advanced supervisees, who are better attuned to individual differences in clients and seek more sophisticated clinical responses, all the way to master level therapists. The book also includes transcripts and analyses of the authors amp rsquo supervisory sessions with real trainees, including those documented in their companion DVD, The Integrative Developmental Model of Supervision.

Writing a textbook on microbial genetics in about 200 pages was un doubtedly a difficult task, but I have been encouraged by the response from both students and lecturers to the first edition. The requirement for a second edition is also a measure of the need for such a book. My experience as a lecturer has shown that what is needed first is an intelligible framework which can be read in a reasonable period of time. Armed with these principles, a student can then go to reviews and the original literature with a reasonable chance of understanding the jargon and the details. Molecular genetics is now so well advanced that it is easy to lose track of the purpose of a set of experiments in the wealth of sequence data and complex interactions. I have therefore kept the same format for this edition with a well-illustrated text giving original papers, popular reviews, monographs and detailed reviews to enable the student to take the subject further as required.
Murder in Old Forge, Pennsylvania: The Tragic Death of the Ziemba Children
On July 26, 1981, eight-year-old Cheryl Ziemba and her four-year-old brother, Christopher, disappeared from their backyard in Old Forge, Pennsylvania. Within hours, hundreds of neighbors, police and firefighters were engaged in a frantic search, praying that they were not a town "snakebitten," or cursed to misfortune. Two days later, all hope was lost when firefighters discovered the bodies of the children in an abandoned strip-mining pit. Pennsylvania State Police arrested their fifteen-year-old neighbor, Joey Aulisio, who was tried as an adult and sentenced to death by electric chair. Forty-three years later, Joey Aulisio still sits in prison. Author Brian W. Kincaid presents a definitive account of one of the most infamous crimes and sensational trials in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Brian W. Foster makes his entrance into the literary world with "Blackened White", a first person account of life, love, faith, and pain. In this collection of poems, essays, and short stories, Foster offers a series of brutally honest, often humorous, and profoundly ironic writings chronicling a journey into his own human condition. Using his unique style of prose and storytelling, we observe a young man wrestling with his faith in the midst of relationships, addictions, sexuality and the unending, relentless desire to be whole. Author and Grammy award winning singer Kevin Max says Blackened White "Prods the flesh with electrodes of hyper emotion, dangerous subtlety and purposefully mannered archaism". Likening it to an "Open House flier", Foster invites the reader along the journey with him through this thought-provoking collection, which is sure to leave an indelible mark on the soul.

"In Sunday Mornings, Brian Phillips has done the church a great service by giving us a short, but rich introduction to worship that honors God. In bite-sized chunks, which can be easily digested by all Christians, he explains the place of children in worship, the dangers of individualism, the biblical order of service, the place of preaching, and a biblical view of worship music. What is most refreshing is that he believes there is a wrong and right way to worship and that the Scriptures give us the right way. Buy a stack, give them to your friends, and help plant seeds that will lead to Sunday mornings that glorify Christ." -Peter Jones, Pastor, Christ Church of Morgantown

Local gossip said the burned out cottage at the edge of the marshes, and the stretch of beach that lay in front of it, was haunted. By the ghost of a girl who used to live there, but who set fire to it one day, then deliberately walked into the sea to drown herself, when someone let it be known that the lover she had lived there with had betrayed her with another woman, before abandoning her completely, by going off to fight on the battlefields of First World War France. Dying there as well, so local gossip said.Local gossip didn't say who the woman had been, or the name of the soldier who had treated her so badly, because it didn't know, but there were at least two women and a man still living in the village who did.And soon another man, newly arrived in the village, was going to know too.

Exorcising an evil spirit is not the easiest of undertakings, especially when it involves exorcising the marshes around the ruins of Ashley Manor in Norfolk, and more especially when the girl you are exorcising the spirit because of says she believes the spirit you are exorcising isn't evil, but is protecting her from something else, and that you should stop doing what you're doing to get rid of it.You go ahead anyway and when it's too late, discover the girl was right, and that something far worse, a centuries-old evil, involving a pact with the devil was lurking in the background just waiting for its chance when set free. And being set free proves almost impossible to control.

The Laugavegur Trail is a lighthearted guide to Iceland's most famous and popular backpacking trek. More than anything, I want you to be happy with your purchase of this book, so know that this guide is written as a hiking companion penned by a volcanologist. If you are not a geologist, don't worry I wrote this guide to be accessible to everyone. It is for those who hike with their eyes up - fascinated by the landscapes they see and curious about how they formed. While logistics are, of course, provided for trip-planning purposes, I encourage you to keep up with ever-changing trail conditions through Ferdafelag Island (https: //www.fi.is/en/laugavegur/laugavegur-conditions). The book is also complimented well by the Serkort #4 (Landmannalaugar Fjallabak) 1:100,000 topographic map.If you are looking for some recreational reading while on the path, I encourage you to check out my fantasy novel, called "Laugavegur: A Novel" (available through Amazon). It is paced well for trail reading and will give you some easter eggs to go looking for along the way.
