Aristophanes and Athenian society of the early 4th century B.C.
The purposes of this short monograph are to identify and analyze the problems of Athenian society with which the last two extant plays of Aristophanes - the Ekklesiazousai and the Ploutos - are concerned, as well as to examine the playright's views on the essence of these problems and on attempts to find satisfactory solutions to them. The work contains an introduction and seven sections: 1. Historical Background; 2. Poverty: Symptoms, Ideas regarding Solutions and Criticisms of Ideas; 3. Poverty versus Riches; 4. The sources of the ''Communistic'' Ideas; 5. Misthos Ekklesiastikos ; 6. The Censure of Materialism; 7. Aristophanes and the ''Middle Road''. The author has attempted here to set forth both the value of Aristophanes' last plays as historical sources and the significance of their social message.

Medieval Britain, c.1000–1500

Medieval Britain, c.1000–1500

Though England was the emerging super-state in the medieval British Isles, its story is not the only one Britain can offer; there is a wider context of Britain in Europe, and the story of this period is one of how European Latin and French culture and ideals colonised the minds of all the British peoples. This engaging and accessible introduction offers a truly integrated perspective of medieval British history, emphasising elements of medieval life over political narrative, and offering an up-to-date presentation and summary of medieval historiography. Featuring figures, maps, a glossary of key terms, a chronology of rulers, timelines and annotated suggestions for further reading and key texts, this textbook is an essential resource for undergraduate courses on medieval Britain. Supplementary online resources include additional further reading suggestions, useful links and primary sources.
Missional Apologetics: Cultural Diagnosis and Gospel Plausibility in C. S. Lewis and Lesslie Newbigin
"Can the West be converted?" That question gripped longtime missionary Lesslie Newbigin when he moved back to his British homeland and saw its post-Christian condition. Likewise, renowned author C. S. Lewis viewed Europe and North America as a mission field. Lewis said that Christians in the West needed to learn the "mental habits... of their unbelieving fellow countrymen," much as overseas missionaries had to learn the language and traditions of another culture. Lewis and Newbigin were missional apologists: each developed a missionary diagnosis of the cultural context and explored ways of showing the gospel's plausibility in that setting.Missional Apologetics clearly portrays Lewis's and Newbigin's perceptions of Western cultural barriers to Christian conviction, their views of epistemology (how we know things), and their tactics for helping people to see gospel truth. David Feddes draws on Lewis's and Newbigin's books, articles, and thousands of letters, as well as extensive research in cultural history and sociology of religion. In comparing and contrasting Lewis and Newbigin, Missional Apologetics offers fresh insight for knowing and showing gospel truth in our contemporary setting.

What is now called JCPenney, a fixture of suburban shopping malls, started out as a small-town Main Street store that fused its founder's interests in agriculture, retail business, religion, and philanthropy. This book - at once a biography of Missouri farm boy-turned-business icon James Cash Penney and the story of the company he started in 1902 - brings to light the little-known agrarian roots of an American department store chain. David Delbert Kruger explores how the company, its stores, and their famous founder shaped rural America throughout the twentieth century. ""Most of our stores,"" Penney explained in 1931, ""are located in agricultural regions where the tide of merchandising rises and falls with the prosperity of the farmers."" Despite the growth of cities in the early twentieth century, Penney maintained his stores' commitment to serving the needs of farmers and small-town folk. Tracing this dedication to Penney's rural upbringing, Kruger describes how, from one store in the sheep-ranching and mining town of Kemmerer, Wyoming, J. C. Penney Co. became a familiar chain on Main Street, USA, purveying value, providing good jobs, and marking rites of passage in many an American childhood. Kruger paints a biographical and historical picture of an American business mogul distinctly different from comparable capitalists such as Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, or Sam Walton. Despite his chain's corporate structure, Penney imbued each store with a Golden Rule philosophy that demanded mutual respect between customers, employees, competitors, suppliers, and communities. By tracing that spirit to its agrarian source, and following it through the twentieth century, J. C. Penney: The Man, the Store, and American Agriculture provides a new perspective on this American cultural institution - and on its founder's unique brand of American capitalism.

Translated by Leon J. Weinberger with Dena Ordan This slender anonymous work, spanning 1389 to 1611, presents the priorities and concerns of a Jewish community straddling the late medieval and early modern periods. Ample footnotes and explanations provide the lay reader with sufficient background to understand the references to historical events and figures, to ideologies and to institutions. A comprehensive introduction presents the realities of Prague and Bohemia, as well as offering a helpful discussion of the chronicle and other contemporary Jewish accounts.Conservative Jewish QuarterlyIn about 1615 an anonymous Jew from Prague composed a short Hebrew chronicle to recount 'the expulsions, miracles, and other occurrences befalling [the Jews] in Prague and the other lands of our long exile.' Abraham David discovered the manuscript [and] added glosses, historical notes, and an introduction. . . . The chronicle, with its brief annual entries, is not a continuous narrative, but does give a feeling of immediacy, like a newspaper.Polin: Studies in Polish Jewry

David Robertson charts W. C. Handy's rise from a rural-Alabama childhood in the last decades of the nineteenth century to his emergence as one of the most celebrated songwriters of the twentieth century. The child of former slaves, Handy was first inspired by spirituals and folk songs, and his passion for music pushed him to leave home as a teenager, despite opposition from his preacher father. Handy soon found his way to St. Louis, where he spent a winter sleeping on cobblestone docks before lucking into a job with an Indiana brass band. It was in a minstrel show, playing to racially mixed audiences across the country, that he got his first real exposure as a professional musician, but it was in Memphis, where he settled in 1905, that he hit his full stride as a composer. At once a testament to the power of song and a chronicle of race and black music in America, W. C. Handy's life story is in many ways the story of the birth of our country's indigenous culture - and a riveting must read for anyone interested in the history of American music.
