D-Day: Omaha Beach

D-Day: Omaha Beach

Stephen Badsey; Tim Bean

At 0630 hours on 6 June 1944, the US Army's 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions led the assault on Omaha Beach, the most strongly defended of the all invasion beaches. Supporting Allied bombers had mostly missed their targets, the offshore naval bombardment was hampered by poor visibility, and many elements of the first assault waves were swamped or sank, including amphibious tanks. The first waves of infantry waded ashore into a storm of German fire. In these first harrowing hours of 'Overlord', Lieutenant General Omar Bradley, commanding First US Army, seriously considered aborting the Omaha landing altogether. Yet despite appalling difficulties and heavy casualties, the US troops prevailed and a vulnerable bridgehead inland was established by the evening of 6 June. It was the hardest fight of D-Day.

On 6 June 1944, 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division spearheaded the British landing at Gold Beach, near the coastal resort of Arromanches. Despite poor weather conditions, the assault troops overcame determined opposition to establish a beachhead and win the only Victoria Cross awarded on D-Day. By the next day Gold Beach was in full use as a reception and dispersal site, with all four brigades of 50th Division and numerous supporting units ashore and driving inland. Starting with an analysis of the two sides and their plans, Simon Trew describes the battle for Gold Beach and how British attempts to exploit their initial success were frustrated by bitter German resistance. Four detailed battlefield tours follow, covering some of the most dramatic actions fought by the 50th Division and its attached units during the opening stages of one of the most important battles in history.

The British Beach Groups were a combined force of men stationed on the Normandy Beaches from the initial landing until the last unit was disbanded a few weeks after D-Day. They performed many vital roles during the assault, including: arranging and controlling the movement of all personnel and vehicles from landing craft to inland assembly areas; moving stores from ship’s holds to dumps in the beach maintenance areas; developing and organising the beaches and beach maintenance areas for defence, movement and administration, including the evacuation of casualties and the recovery vehicles; providing a beach signal organisation; organising the removal and repatriation of casualties, prisoners of war and salvaged equipment; creating dumps to hold the petrol, ammunition, rations etc. that were being landed; and establishing assembly areas for arriving personnel and their vehicles. This book explores how this often-forgotten unit were the first to arrive and the last to leave one of history’s greatest military operations and how their behind-the-scenes action saved lives and were essential for the success of the landings.

The Allied landings in France on 6 June 1944 were a turning point in world history. This book is a compilation of 200 images relating to all aspects of D-Day and the Normandy landings, beginning with the years of planning and preparations, all conducted in great secrecy. Next the focus is on the naval and air force operations, the airborne landings, and the British, American and Canadian forces who came ashore on 6 June. The book also covers the months of hard fighting during the Battle of Normandy, and through to the end of the war. Using the extensive archives of the Portsmouth D-Day Museum, this is a moving and unique record of a momentous time.

The strengths, weaknesses and sheer drama of airborne warfare are all encapsulated in 6th Airborne Division’s attacks on Pegasus Bridge and the Merville Battery in Normandy. The lightly armed but highly trained and motivated airborne troops sought to overcome a more heavily armed enemy desperate to unhinge the D-Day invasion. Starting with an examination of 6th Airborne Division, its plan and the German opposition, Lloyd Clark provides an overview of British operations east of the River Orne from the initial landings in the early hours of 6 June 1944 to the capture of Breville, seven days later. The battlefield tours that follow include not only the famous and dramatic assaults on Pegasus Bridge and the Merville Battery, but also the lesser known struggles to secure the British southern flank on 6-7 June and the Battle of Breville on 12 June. Packed with colour and detailed maps, these are the must-have guide for any armchair historian or battlefield tourist.

Following the German counterattack at Mortain on 7 August 1944, Generals Omar Bradley and Bernard Montgomery decided to engage in a wide encircling movement, to trap the enemy divisions that were trying to advance westwards. XV US Corps entered Le Mans on 8 August and then advanced rapidly northwards. Meanwhile, Montgomery had broken the German front south of Caen despite stiff resistance. The Canadians of II Corps bore down on Falaise, eventually capturing the town of 16 August. Together with 1st Polish Armoured Division, they then accelerated their advance, seeking to meet American forces moving northwards. With well over 100,000 Germans in danger of encirclement, Hitler gave permission for a general withdrawal. Under the combined pressure of the Americans and French to the south, the Americans and British to the west and the Canadians and Poles to the north, the net tightened inexorably. By 21 August the Falaise Pocket was all but shut, confirming the defeat of the German Army in Normandy. Packed with colour and detailed maps, these are the must-have guide for any armchair historian or battlefield tourist.
D.Z. Phillips' Contemplative Philosophy of Religion
This collection presents a critical discussion and exploration of the late D.Z. Phillips' contemplative approach in the philosophy of religion. What are the main characteristics of this ground-breaking approach, which is inspired by thinkers like Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein and meant as a serious, critical alternative to the mainstream way of doing philosophy of religion? What is its aim, if it is deliberately avoiding apology and defence of faith? How does Phillips' approach relate to systematic, historical and empirical theology and is it really as 'neutral' as he claims it to be? Or is he, perhaps, a certain kind of theologian? What are the implications of his contemplative philosophy for central issues of religious life today, such as petitionary prayer, the hope of 'eternal life' and radical religious diversity? The essays of six distinguished scholars from five different nations critically and sympathetically address these questions and are responded to by Phillips in essays of his own, written briefly before his sudden death in July 2006.

The only unsolved act of air piracy in US history from the perspective of a mathematician and pilot. On November 24, 1971, a polite, nondescript, and dark-complexioned man calling himself "Dan Cooper" hijacked Northwest Airlines Flight 305, Boeing 727, between Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. At Seattle International Airport, he demanded and received $200,000 and four parachutes, released the passengers, and ordered the crew to take him to Mexico. Somewhere along the way, he jumped. He was never found or identified. Forty-five years later, the FBI gave up the hunt. To show where and how the FBO could resume the search and possibly find out at last who “D. B. Cooper” really was, this book utilizes: Previously unexamined data and original-source documentsUsing statistics, aeronautics, and meteorology Author Bob Edwards is an economist and a contractor in economic, demographic, and market research. He holds a private pilot's license and has experience in parachuting, giving him a unique perspective in the possibilities of the D. B. Cooper case.
D'Annunzio

D'Annunzio

Michael Ledeen

Transaction Publishers
2001
nidottu
Gabriele D'Annunzio was one of the most flamboyant figures in the political history of modern Europe. A poet in the Byronic style and a popular hero of the First World War, D'Annunzio passionately believed that the sacrifices of war should prelude a new social order. His capture of the city of Fiume in 1919, which had been claimed by Italy as part of the settlement before the Versailles Peace Conference, has been popularized and romanticized ever since. Ledeen uses information gathered from Italian and American archives and from personal interviews to examine the sixteen months of D'Annunzio's personal rule in Fiume, seeing it as a harbinger of successful mass movements of the twentieth century. The connection between D'Annunzio and Fascism is central to Ledeen's narrative. Virtually the entire ritual of Fascist politics made familiar by Mussolini-the balcony address, the Roman salute, the dramatic dialogues with the crowd, the use of religious symbols in a new secular setting-was influenced by D'Annunzio at Fiume. Both were masters of a political style based on personal charisma. Each spoke for a "new" Italy and, eventually, for a new world. Each attempted to transform his countrymen into more heroic types by an ethic of violence and grandeur. But Ledeen brings sharply into focus profound differences between D'Annunzio's vision of a new world and that offered by Fascism. Significantly, D'Annunzio enlisted support from the most diverse elements of society-politicians and businessmen in addition to representatives of radical trade unions, anarchist groups, and the armed forces. Often sensationalized as a precursor of a sixties-style "dolce vita," D'Annunzio's Fiume presented many of the phenomena considered novel or unsettling today: sexual promiscuity, widespread experimentation with drugs, clergymen wanting to marry, women demanding equal rights, youth calling for the elimination of the old, soldiers insisting on a democratic army, poets yearning for a beautiful world instead of a purely utilitarian one, minorities clamoring for their fair share of political power. From the dispassionate distance of half a century, Ledeen views Fiume as a microcosm of the larger chaos of our contemporary scene. Although he was removed from Fiume after a pitched battle on land and sea, D'Annunzio remained an influential figure in Italian politics. Ledeen presents him as "one of the great innovators and watersheds of the modern world." This book will be of interest to historians, political scientists, and those interested in Post World War I Italy. An authority on Italian fascism and contemporary Europe, Michael A. Ledeen is Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington. In addition to being a frequent contributor to The New Republic, The American Spectator, and 11 Giornale (Milan), he is the author of 15 books on contemporary history and politics.
