Unhappy Warrior: The Life and Death of Robert S. Starobin

Unhappy Warrior: The Life and Death of Robert S. Starobin

Independently Published

Based on extensive research and interviews, Unhappy Warrior is a stirring examination of the life and death of the radical left-wing historian, professor, and activist, Robert S. Starobin. Son of renowned communist and Foreign Editor for the Daily Worker, Joseph Starobin, Robert Starobin was a leading figure in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Free Speech Movement (FSM) at the University of California at Berkeley, as well as an early supporter of the Black Panthers. As a student, and later as a professor and historian at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, he defined his short life as a struggle against injustice, protesting everything from university policies and curricula to racial discrimination, nuclear testing, and the war in Vietnam. Unhappy Warrior is a complex and compelling depiction of life in the U.S. in the years during and immediately following the Vietnam War-a violent, bewildering, still largely unresolved chapter in the history of this nation.

This is a book of ghost stories, and for the most part, ghosts are jealous monsters, intent upon our destruction. They never appear overtly here, yet we gradually become aware of the spirits in haunted houses in the way they tread over creaky floors, slam doors, and issue sudden gusts of wind. These poems are Koan-like—the fewer the words, the more charged they are. The engine driving the sense of haunting and loss is money, which Davis describes as “federal bone” boiling around us. Bison in Nebraska are reduced to bones, “seven/standing men/tall” fodder for the fertilizer used by farmers in the 1800s. There is, too, an equality to the hauntings—every instance has its moment, and persists, despite being in the past, present, or future. Index of Haunted Houses is spooky and sad—a stunning debut, one that will surprise, convince, and most of all, delight.

From closeted capes, to drugged out Do-Gooders, no one is safe from the poison pen of Sara Michaels and her award winning snake of a photographer, Glenn Barry

Hopper & Cape Ann tells the little known, largely ignored, and profoundly significant origin story of Edward Hopper s years in and around Gloucester, Massachusetts a period and place that imbued Hopper s painting with a clarity and purpose that eluded his earlier work and set the stage for his monumental career. Expanding on a major retrospective exhibit at the Cape Ann Museum ( July 22 October 16, 2023) to include an unprecedented loan of 25 works from the Whitney Museum of American Art, the book focuses on the summer of 1923 when Hopper first embraced watercolour during outdoor painting excursions on Cape Ann and discovered one of his favourite subjects, houses and vernacular architecture. The success of Hopper s Gloucester watercolours transformed his work in all media. What is significant and revealed in this volume is the lesser known story about how a young painter, Josephine Nivison, who became the most trusted force underlying Hopper s artistic confidence as well as his wife. Here she is recast as principal producer of Hopper s distinctive style and most trusted brand visionary from the time of their courtship until his death in 1967.

When Hubert Davis was named head men's basketball coach at the University of North Carolina in April 2021, history had already been made, as Davis became the program's first Black head coach. But after two difficult seasons, it was hard to imagine how quickly a new staff, a new playing style, and a new roster blending established players with prominent transfers and talented freshmen would be able to change the story—except within the fabled Smith Center locker room and practice gyms, where photos of the New Orleans Superdome helped players and staff focus on the possible. In words and photos full of behind-the-scenes moments, this book reveals how belief in the program's rich traditions and in one another enabled the 2021-2022 Tar Heels to achieve what at times seemed impossible, writing a thrilling new chapter in the story of Carolina basketball. From Davis's remarkable work to build a new staff and roster to the ups and downs of the conference season to the amazing run through March to the pinnacle of the college game, the story takes fans through one of the most dramatic years in program history.

The story of King David, his childhood, his battle with the Philistines, his women, and the tragedy of his son Absalom, is full of excitement, but yet is only a part of his life. His relationship with the Lord God was the key thing, and he danced before the Lord. He was also the first King of Israel, and our story starts at the time when Jerusalem was conquered by Babylon, and its people taken away into captivity. They started to look back at the foundation myths of their history, and the story of David and Solomon, when the kingdom was at the height of its glory, seemed to be just the story to tell. So that is how the collection of stories of David came to be compiled into the books we can read today.
