Times of peace, times of war, the people involved will no doubt be shaped around those events. What one child may live each day may be a fantasy to another, and what one child can only imagine is a reality to another. The path one takes is a reflection of themselves, and the journey will mold them into the people they become by the end of their travels. Tread your path, and never look back.

Short-listed for the 2013 New Angle Prize for Literature.BOOK OF THE YEAR - overall winner of the East Anglian Book Awards 2012"A major piece of work, beautifully presented, on a subject familiar to us all but about which few of us have a deep understanding. Reading The Last Hunters is sure to change that" - Eastern Daily Press"I put it aside for late summer reading but couldn't put it down. [Candy Whittome] has caught the voices and that East Anglian up-beat realism... Brilliant" - Richard Mabey"Candy Whittome and David Morris's book pays tribute to the crabmen of Cromer. The photographs are beautifully composed, and the descriptions of the people interviewed full of affection. But what makes the book special is the range of voices we hear… natural storytellers, recounting tales of triumph and catastrophe - long days, rough seas, terrible accidents, glorious homecomings with a full catch" - Blake MorrisonThe Last Hunters is a contemporary portrait of one of the last surviving fishing communities in Britain. The book tells the stories of the Cromer crab fishermen and their families in their own words, accompanied by David Morris' stunning black-and-white photographs. A compelling account of a community in danger The Last Hunters celebrates a way of living that is in tune with the environment, reliant on skill, resilience, and exceptional will. It is also an utterly human story of a group of ordinary people living out-of-the-ordinary lives.

The Last of the Market Hunters

The Last of the Market Hunters

Duck hunting has changed greatly since the days of unlimited duck kills, as the limit of fifty ducks a day established in 1902 has fallen to the present three. A legitimate hunter now, Dale Hamm learned the art of market hunting— taking waterfowl out of season and selling them to restaurants— from his father during the l920s. During the l930s and l940s, he kept his family alive by market hunting. At the peak of his career, Hamm poached every private hunting club along the Illinois River from Havana to Beardstown. After market hunting died out, Hamm became a legendary and almost respected— albeit controversial— character on the Illinois backwaters. He was eventually invited to hunt on the same clubs from which he had once been chased at the point of a shotgun. He hunted with judges, sheriffs, and the head of undercover operations for the Illinois Department of Conservation, all of whom knew of his reputation. He passed on to these hunting partners a lifetime of outdoor knowledge gained from slogging through mud, falling through ice, hunting ducks at three o’ clock in the morning, dodging game wardens, and running the world’ s only floating tavern."I always said if anyone ever cut open one of us Hamms, all they’ d find was duck or fish," Hamm once said of his family. Now in his eighties, Hamm still carries a pellet from a shotgun in his chin to remind him of a shotgun blast that ricocheted off the water and into his face. Bakke notes that it is appropriate that a man who spent his life with a shotgun in his hands should carry a bit of buckshot wherever he goes.Everyone who ever met Dale Hamm has a story about him. His own story is that of a one-of-a-kind character who, in his later years, used his considerable outdoor savvy to conserve the natural resources he once savaged. "His time and kind are gone," Bakke notes, "and there will never be another like him."This book will be of interest to anyone who has ever been hunting— or who enjoys reading about colorful people and times that exist no more.

An Introduction to Universal Artificial Intelligence provides the formal underpinning of what it means for an agent to act intelligently in an unknown environment. First presented in Universal Algorithmic Intelligence (Hutter, 2000), UAI offers a framework in which virtually all AI problems can be formulated, and a theory of how to solve them. UAI unifies ideas from sequential decision theory, Bayesian inference, and algorithmic information theory to construct AIXI, an optimal reinforcement learning agent that learns to act optimally in unknown environments. AIXI is the theoretical gold standard for intelligent behavior. The book covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of UAI. Bayesian updating can be done efficiently with context tree weighting, and planning can be approximated by sampling with Monte Carlo tree search. It provides algorithms for the reader to implement, and experimental results to compare against. These algorithms are used to approximate AIXI. The book ends with a philosophical discussion of Artificial General Intelligence: Can super-intelligent agents even be constructed? Is it inevitable that they will be constructed, and what are the potential consequences? This text is suitable for late undergraduate students. It provides an extensive chapter to fill in the required mathematics, probability, information, and computability theory background.
