"His bike lay prostrate in the road. Someone had pushed it over, hard. Gas poured from the tank and snaked its way toward the curb as if the bike had sustained an arterial head wound." All he wanted was a burger and to get his ass off his motorcycle for a while. Walking into Lucky's bar was a very bad idea. A chance encounter with the local bully throws black market courier Michael Chord, deep into the world of small town Clements, Iowa, enmeshing him into a nefarious conspiracy filled with bikers, Taser-happy citizens, and sex-crazed squirrels. His ride is out of commission. His cargo is questionable. His prospects of staying out of prison are very slim. Chord is about to have the strangest night of his life. John Mont t is a writer, biker, and Web developer living in the Driftless area along the Mississippi River. This, his first novella, offers us a fun-filled ride into a strange town deep in the weird and seedy hills of Northeast Iowa.
Let Evening Come: For Soprano, Viola and Piano
(E.B. Marks). Bolcom's commission was originally to write a duet piece for Metropolitan Opera stars soprano Benita Valente and mezzo-soprano Tatiana Troyanos. However, while the composition was in development, Troyanos unexpectedly died. The design was then changed, representing the late mezzo-soprano with a viola instead. The composer selected three poems about the acceptance of death for the set: "Ailey, Baldwin, Floyd, Killens and Mayfield" (Maya Angelou), "'Tis not that Dying hurts us so" (Emily Dickinson), and "Let Evening Come" (Jane Kenyon). Let Evening Come was recorded by soprano Benita Valenti, pianist Cynthia Raim and violist Michael Tree, and released on Centaur Records.

Larry McMurtry's Terms of Endearment touched readers in a way no other story has in recent years. The earthy humor and the powerful emotional impact that set this novel apart rise to brilliant new heights with The Evening Star. McMurtry takes us deep into the heart of Texas, and deep into the heart of one of the most memorable characters of our time, Aurora Greenway--along with her family, friends, and lovers--in a tale of affectionate wit, bittersweet tenderness, and the unexpected turns that life can take. This is Larry McMurtry at his very best: warm, compassionate, full of comic invention, an author so attuned to the feelings, needs, and desires of his characters that they possess a reality unique in American fiction.

Everyone has secrets. Everyone has said, done or witnessed things they prefer not to talk about. I'm no different. My secrets, if known beyond my small circle of friends, could unravel a life that in many ways is ideal... my own.My name is Clay Arnold. I'm a freelance photographer of some renown which means I make a very good living traveling the world on photographic assignments. My home is in a renovated nineteenth century beer brewery situated along the White River north of Indianapolis, Indiana. Most importantly, it's where my close family of friends also resides. Oh, and there's one other thing... I'm an avenging vigilante. So what does that mean exactly? That I'm an avenging vigilante. Yes, it's true that I've executed several domestic terrorists and right-wing racists who I felt deserved it. Yes, if I were totally honest, I would agree that I've felt a bit self-righteous about terminating bad people. And again honestly, I'm generally comfortable with being someone who chooses to even the score... but I have to admit that secrecy about this sometimes comes at a heavy price.

The Washington Star: The Rise and Fall of a Great American Newspaper is the story of the 129-year history of one of the preeminent newspapers in journalism history when city newspapers across the country were at the height of their power and influence. The Star was the most financially successful newspaper in the Capital and among the top ten in the country until its decline in the 1970s. The paper began in 1852 when the capital city was a backwater southern town. The Star’s success over the next century was due to its singular devotion to local news, its many respected journalists, and the historic times in which it was published. The book provides a unique perspective on more than a century of local, national and international history. The book also exposes the complex reasons for the Star’s rise and fall from dominance in Washington’s newspaper market. The Noyes and Kauffmann families who owned and operated the Star for a century play an important role in that story. Patriarch Crosby Noyes’ life and legacy is the most fascinating –a classic Horatio Alger story of the illegitimate son of a Maine farmer who by the time of his death was a respected newspaper publisher and member of Washington’s influential elite. In 1974 his descendants sold the once-great newspaper Noyes built to Joseph Allbritton. Allbritton and then Time, Inc. tried to save the Star but failed.

Winter Evening Tales (1820; second edition 1821) was James Hogg's most successful work of prose fiction in his lifetime. Exhibiting the most complex genesis of any of Hogg's works, it is the outstanding example of a 'national' genre pioneered by him -- the miscellaneous collection of popular and traditional narratives. Hogg's experimental medley of novellas, tales, poems and sketches posed a lively alternative to the dominant form of the historical novel established by Walter Scott. The collection includes terse masterpieces of mystery and the uncanny, virtuoso improvisations on folktale themes, and -- the highlights of the edition -- two brilliant autobiographical novellas, The Renowned Adventures of Basil Lee and Love Adventures of Mr George Cochrane. Reprinted in incomplete and unreliable texts in Victorian editions of Hogg's works, Winter Evening Tales fell into almost total obscurity after the author's death. The Stirling/ South Carolina Edition of the Collected Works of James Hogg is delighted to republish this key work in Hogg's career in its entirety for the first time since the early nineteenth century.

"Come, my soul, sit at Jesus's feet and learn of him all this day." Our hearts long for true connection with God-to know Him, to be known by Him, and to be transformed by this knowing. Whether we recognize it or not, we are forever searching for moments of intimacy, of communion with Jesus. In our busy, cluttered world, it's far too easy to ignore these longings, to forget that the deepest desires of our hearts are met in the person of Jesus Christ. But what if we could actually, daily, shift our attention towards him and, in doing so, find ourselves fulfilled, whole, and absolutely loved? In Morning and Evening, Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892), a 19th century theologian, preacher, and evangelical activist, will take you on a daily journey to knowing the person, perspective, and presence of Jesus Christ. Spurgeon's humility, inclusivity, and single-focused love of Jesus is inspiring and absolutely infectious. His passionate belief that all things speak of Christ and point to Christ resonates throughout these pages, where you will be invited to: Delight in the person of Jesus;Find fulfillment in Him alone;Know Him intimately; And respond with your life-out of love and surrender. This daily morning and evening devotional will guide you to the feet of Jesus, where you will begin your days by fixing your gaze on Him and finish your days by basking in His endless love."I must meditate upon him until I 'comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge.' It will be an affectionate knowledge of him; indeed, if I know him at all, I must love him."

A book that will greatly enhance understanding of the situation of single women in the nineteenth-century South, An Evening When Alone presents the journals of four very different women who, although their lives were worlds apart, each lived and wrote in the South during the years 1827-67. Intimate and revealing, these journals provide refreshing insight into the joys and travails of "ordinary" single women in the nineteenth century South: courtship, disappointed love, illness, the gratifications and pains of female friendship, the grief of the Civil War, the ambivalences of family life, and the difficulty and consolation of religion.

Tony Ardizzone writes of the moments in our lives that shine, that burn in the dim expanse of memory with the intensity and vivid light of the evening news. The men and women in these stories tend to arrange their days, order their pasts, plan their futures in the light of such moments, finding epiphanies in the glowing memory of a father’s laugh or a mother’s repeated story, in a broken date or a rained-out ball game.Set mostly in Chicago’s blue-collar neighborhoods, these stories focus on subjects that concern us all: disease and death, vandalism and sacrilege, rape and infidelity, lost love. The husband and wife in the title story look at their pasts—his as an activist in the sixties and hers as a believer in reincarnation and the tarot—in light of the news stories they watch on television each evening and question whether they should bring a child into the world. And in “The Walk-On,” a bartender and former varsity pitcher for the University of Illinois Fighting Illini finds the actual events of the most cataclysmic day in his past unequal to their impact on his life and so rewrites them in his mind, adding an ill-placed banana peel, a falling meteor, and a careening truck in order to create a more fitting climax and finally to leave those memories behind him.Searching their pasts for clues to the present, searching the horizons of their days for love, the characters in The Evening News seek, and sometimes find, redemption in a world of uncertainty and brightly burning emotions.
