Hölderlin's essays and letters constitute essential documents for an understanding of the transitional period from neo-classical poetics to what can only be characterized as a unique and, in its frequently experimental structure, essentially modernist poetics. This book contains virtually all of Hölderlin's theoretical writings translated for the first time. In spite of the great significance of Hölderlin's ideas for contemporary critical thought, most of his highly important theoretical oeuvre has been unavailable to English readers until now. Here also are a number of letters which chart the development of Hölderlin's thought on issues that today remain fundamental to poetics and philosophy. The work's critical introduction discusses both the historical genesis of Hölderlin's theoretical writings out of the enlightenment as well as their systematic interaction with post-Kantian Idealism. Through interpretations of three short fragments, Pfau indicates that it would be insufficient to consider Hölderlin as the mere precursor of the great systematic philosophers of German Idealism--Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel. Instead, Hölderlin's earliest theoretical fragments already mark a turn away from the rigorous systematicity that underlies the philosophical discourse of his contemporaries. Hölderlin's theoretical writings may be the most seminal texts in the widely discussed interimplication of Idealistic philosophy and Romantic poetry and poetics.
Friedrich Gilly – Essays on Architecture 1796– 1799
When Friedrich Gilly died in 1800 at the age of 28, his architectural career had spanned less than a decade and construction of his major designs was incomplete. Nevertheless, his ideas so strongly influenced Berlin architecture of the next century that he is now widely regarded as the founder of Berlin's distinct architectural tradition. By uniting Rationalist and Neoclassicist principles, his designs achieve an artistic expression that is at once visually dramatic and formally pure. Today, his theories are known primarily through the work of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, his student who became one of Berlin's primary modern architects. In addition to presenting five of Gilly's most influential essays, this volume contains previously unpublished archival records that clarify the intellectual context in which Gilly developed his thoughts on architecture. A catalogue of Gilly's personal library is also presented.

Friedrich Hecker (1811-1881) lived the first half of his life in the Grand Duchy of Baden, a small state in southern Germany. He was a major leader of a rebellion on behalf of the German republican movement in 1848, but his defeat forced him into exile in America. There he spent the second half of his life as a farmer in southern Illinois, helping to found the Republican Party and campaigning among his countrymen in local and national elections. During the Civil War, he served bravely, fighting in some of the most important battles. Although much better known in Germany than in America, he founded a remarkable family in the Midwest that is still flourishing and is a major example of the melding of the European and American traditions of liberty. The work draws heavily from original sources, including letters and diaries at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection, the Missouri Historical Society, and the St. Louis Mercantile Library.

"My paradise lies in the shadow of my sword." With these words, Friedrich Nietzsche described his attitude toward his philosophical war against Christianity. Even though he saw that God is dead and as a result, Christian morality must eventually collapse and perish, Nietzsche condemned Christianity and wanted to "crush the infamy" because, as an anti-natural slave morality, Christianity corrupts humanity by making it weaker and by hindering the pursuit of knowledge and truth. Ever since the slave revolt in morality began over two thousand years ago, the slave morality of Christianity and its heir, the democratic movement, have been victorious in the struggle against master morality, resulting in the corrupted humanity of today. In response, Nietzsche waged a war against slave morality in his revaluation of all values in order to bring about the victory of a new master morality. As the means for this victory, Nietzsche's idea of the eternal recurrence provides the basis for both his philosophy of the future and his religion of the future (the Dionysian faith) that he intended to serve as the foundations of a European cultural rebirth during a new era when a new nobility tackles the greatest of all tasks, the higher breeding of humanity, with the goal of human enhancement. Nietzsche deemed it his destiny to be the herald of this new era.A product of a lifetime of study and thought, this book explains and connects in a systematic manner most of Nietzsche's major ideas: the death of God, master and slave moralities, revaluation of all values, Great Noon, Overman, last man, idea of the eternal recurrence, will to power, beyond good and evil, new nobility, higher breeding of humanity, philosophers of the future, amor fati, and the concept of Dionysus. The result is a fuller understanding of and appreciation for the relevance of Nietzsche's ideas to us today. The book is enhanced by a detailed chronology of Nietzsche's life, an explanatory summary of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and an index of all Nietzsche's works quoted or cited therein.
Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi and the Ends of the Enlightenment
Friedrich Jacobi held a position of unparalleled importance in the golden age of late eighteenth and early nineteenth century intellectual history. Nonetheless, the range and style of his thought and its expression has always posed interpretative challenges that continue to hinder his reception. This volume introduces and evaluates Jacobi's pivotal place in the history of ideas. It explores his role in catalyzing the close of the Enlightenment through his critique of reason, how he shaped the reception of Kant's critical philosophy and the subsequent development of German idealism, his effect on the development of Romanticism and religion through his emphasis on feeling, and his influence in shaping the emergence of existentialism. This volume serves as an authoritative resource for one of the most important yet underappreciated figures in modern European intellectual history. It also recasts our understanding of Fichte, Hegel, Kierkegaard, and others in light of his influence and impact.
