These real life stories will inspire and amaz you. A priest learns to forgive the drug abuser, a man he was trying to help, who shot him. An elderly blind woman learns to accept a second failed surgery to restore her vision. A terminally I'll woman who live just long enough to dance at her son's wedding. 'The Human Side of Nursing' is a short story collection about the day-to-day experiences of a visiting nurse and the patients and families under her care. This is the second edition which adds six more stories to the original book. Through these 21 vignettes, the author, a registered nurse, illustrates how illness, aging, and disability affect individuals and families. As her patients learn to manage their health and reconstruct their relationships, they regain hope and meaning for their lives. The patients' interaction with the nurse and the professional challenges and joys she experiences are the central themes of this book. The vignettes, all written in layman's terms, will make you smile, laugh, and cry. The stories are meant to look beneath the surface to the deeper part of human nature. They show the connection among individuals, families, and communities and the challenges and triumphs of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The story themes are similar--joy, fear, anger, confusion, self-determination, and personal growth. Nurses, nursing students, family caregivers, or anyone interested in warm inspirational stories will enjoy this collection. Many have been published previously in nursing journals.
Jazz: America's Gift: From Its Birth to George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue & Beyond
An Innovative Look at the Defining Moments of JazzMusic is both a unifying force and a deeply personal expression of the self. Over the millennia, melody and lyrics have served as a multilayered mode of storytelling and expression of joy, sorrow, and hope. For America, no other musical style is quite so adept at this than jazz. Jazz: America's Gift delves into the rich and storied history of American jazz-from its roots in early American folk song and the blues into the sound and splendor of the Jazz Age. Not just another history book, Jazz: America's Gift is a unique and engaging exploration of the musical styles, traditions, innovations, and incredible talents that shaped jazz, and exposes how jazz itself shaped America's history, bringing the country closer together. No figure embodies the mood and music of this time like George Gershwin, a Jewish-American musical dynamo whose Rhapsody in Blue would become one of the most widely known compositions to come out of this time. Using song titles as markers along the path of Gershwin's life, author Richie Gerber tells the evocative, often joyous, and sometimes heart-wrenching story of this often misunderstood genius. Gershwin's life story is elegantly framed within the larger narrative of the rise of jazz music, with an attention to detail that makes the words leap off the page and music sound in your ears.Jazz: America's Gift is the perfect marriage between Miguel Covarrubias's artwork and the colorful history of the Jazz Age. The interplay of Gerber's words and Covarrubias's images gives each page a rhythm all its own. . . . Who could ask for anything more?

State and Society in the Ottoman Empire

State and Society in the Ottoman Empire

Haim Gerber

This book has three main themes: the socio-economic history of Turkish society in the 17th-18th centuries; the outcome of the Tanzimat (Reforms) in the province of Jerusalem, as an example of the whole phenomenon; and the historical origins of Turkish and Arab identities leading to the modern phenomenon of nationalism. Many of the studies are based on archival research, and the documents give a new picture of the issues involved. Thus, women were much more involved in the public arena and in economic life of the city that formerly thought; the urban family at this time was much smaller and nuclear-like, on the whole much more modern looking than anticipated. In the same way, Turkish society was far from being despotically oppressed by the Ottoman centre, with several institutions existing in it that gave substance to the term civil society. In the context of the 19th century it was found that, judging by the case of the province of Jerusalem, the final phase of the Tanzimat really tipped the balance in favour of the success of this whole movement of Reform: Ottoman society and Ottoman state became much more orderly and at ease with themselves than before, or at least than the stormy decades of the early 19th century. The final studies show that the Ottoman period and the structure of the Ottoman state, more properly, exerted much influence on the forms of nationalism that developed in the Middle East after the Ottoman downfall.

Nancy Gerber

In this thought-provoking memoir, Nancy Gerber maps the wrenching terrain of caring for an elderly parent. In the fall of 1995, at the age of 73, the author's father suffered a massive stroke on the right side of the brain, rendering him permanently disabled. This catastrophic event plunged the author and her family into a crisis for which they were completely unprepared, one that included financial worries; the need to hire full-time, live-in help; and the specter of putting her father into a nursing home. Even more wrenching was the demise of the parent she had always known. From an active, gregarious man with hobbies and friends - a man who had been working at the time of the stroke - her father became withdrawn, hostile, and silent. This profound loss was aggravated by the stress and anxiety that characterize family caregiving. In honest, evocative prose, the author describes her struggle to negotiate the competing demands of love, filial responsibility, familial conflict, and personal autonomy that arise when a parent becomes ill.
