What Jesus Didn’t Say

What Jesus Didn’t Say

Biblical historians have long held that the New Testament abounds in sayings incorrectly attributed to Jesus. In order to assemble as complete a collection of authentic sayings as possible, they have, for the most part, been intent on seeing how the sayings deemed authentic are connected to one another, and attempting to picture their specific contexts. In What Jesus Didn’t Say, Gerd Lüdemann flips the coin and focuses on the inauthentic words of Jesus—not only those thought to be clear inventions, but also sayings that exhibit noteworthy alterations to their original form and intent. For his selection, he uses sayings that:are attributed to Jesus after his crucifixion presuppose a pagan rather than a Jewish audience involve situations in a post-Easter communityreflect the editorial influence of the author According to Lüdemann, the sheer abundance of inauthentic Jesus-sayings demonstrates that, soon after his sudden and dramatic death, he became the centre of a new faith. From the very beginning, Christians imagined what answers Jesus would offer to the questions that arose among them. When the words they recalled no longer seemed adequate, they revised or invented new sayings to suit the existing situation.

Paul’s letters were written before any other Christian texts, even the gospels. And the earliest text of all is ‘1 Thessalonians’. This new English translation is both intelligible and true to the meaning of the original Greek text. In the accompanying commentary, Lüdemann engages critically with the theology of the early Paul, including Paul’s virulent attacks on circumcision and other Jewish practices. Readers desiring a more in-depth study will find detailed appendices on Pauline chronology and later letters.

The first in-depth analysis of Maren Ade's acclaimed contemporary classic, a generational tug-of-war about the meaning of life, work, and death. Maren Ade's tragicomedy Toni Erdmann, a 2016 Cannes sensation and Oscar nominee, is an internationally acclaimed classic of recent German cinema. By turns hilarious, cringeworthy, and heart-wrenching, the film revolves around Winfried, a retired music teacher and prankster trying to rebuild a relationship with his daughter Ines, a high-powered business consultant based in Bucharest. At its center, this unpredictable scenario pits one type of performance - Ines's efforts to meet the unyielding expectations of the new economy - against another - Winfried's anarchic role-play meant to disrupt the standardization of life. This book, the first in-depth analysis of the film, explores the many layers of this generational tug-of-war about the meaning of life, work, and death. Employing Ade's trademark minimalist style, the film deftly comments on the precarity of life; the gendering of labor in the new economy; the re-definition of feminism by the children of the generation of 1968; and reconfigured East-West relations in post-Wall Europe. Lastly, in light of Ade's artisanal mode of filmmaking, in which she regularly assumes the role of writer, director, and producer, Toni Erdmann becomes a highly self-reflexive comment on the neoliberal dictates of global art cinema.

By examining Jewish experiences between the American Civil War and the African American Civil Rights Revolution, this book focuses on citizens who usually spent their daily lives in Black and white “peoplehoods.” Some of the white ones, commanding the nation’s “public square,” structured a segregated republic and capitalist economy that would experience WWII and the news about the Holocaust that murdered millions of Jews. This political economy sustained a hierarchy of privatized ethnic groups whose race and religion, in their norms of “ethnicking,” was used to deprive them of legal and equal collective standing. This Was America is a book about those privatized identities that the years of the Civil Rights Revolution would bring into the republic’s public square.
Balancing ACT: The Horse in Sport--An Irreconcilable Conflict?
A wake-up-call of a follow-up from the bestselling author of Tug of War: Classical versus "Modern" Dressage. In no uncertain terms, this book asks what it means to be a responsible rider, and whether, in today's society, it is indeed possible for equestrians in any horse sport to put the good of the horse first and foremost, and above ambition and fame. With vibrantly clear illustrations of the horse's anatomy and how it is impacted by various riding techniques, Balancing Act presents proof that, although some steps have been taken to prevent the use of forceful and cruel techniques, many sport horses still perform in pain and discomfort. With detailed, practical information on horse physiology and multiple examples of poor riding in pictures so that the reader can avoid similar pitfalls, Dr. Heuschmann gives all of us reasons to examine ourselves and those around us through the lens of the horse's welfare. As a veterinarian with thorough knowledge of the working equine's body, Dr. Heuschmann ultimately intends through his expos to show how bad horse-training methods can be eradicated in favor of far more humane ones. Readers will also find five chapters full of researched and proven recommendations for retraining horses with behavioral or biomechanical issues related to poor training techniques, including: The tense horse. The rein-lame horse. The horse with gait deviations. The hyperflexed horse. The unbalanced horse that is off the aids.

Moin*, moin, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Phillip Denker. I am now in my early thirties and, a few months ago, I completed my studies in criminalistics and psychology with summa cum laude. I come from a rich shipping family in Hamburg. I am an only child. My father, as the owner, achieved a turnover of several million euros a year. At that time, it was all about legal business. But times were getting worse. In recent years, my father had invested more and more of our money in real estate. The prices for land and houses rose daily. The greater the demand, the higher the prices. My family owns a house in P seldorf where my parents live and a condominium in the city centre which was bought for me shortly before my birth by my father, in which I now live in. In the past, there was a huge concert hall, the Elbphilharmonie, directly in front of it. The people of Hamburg lovingly called it the Elphi. This house was destroyed by a bomb attack in 2020.That was a few years ago. At that time, I was 20 years old. So I can still remember the building very well. It was an impressive building that was visited a lot by tourists and locals. The concerts were always sold out. Luckily, the police could clear the building in time so that nobody was hurt or killed. However, the Elbphilharmonie was no more to be saved and had to be torn off due to serious damages. Now, I enjoy free view of the Elbe, which flows directly into the sea.Sometimes, I longed to simply follow the river, out on the open sea into absolute freedom. We also owned a weekend house in Waren on the M ritz.My grandfather had bought the plot of land in the middle of the nature reserve, directly at the river, immediately after the reunification and had built the house on it. My grandparents now live there. It is their retirement home. With a size of 185cm, I have a sporty figure; I work on it daily and do a lot of sport. Every evening, I jog two rounds around the Outer Alster, in total 14 kilometres, and pass our company headquarters twice. Often, there was a light burning late at night because my father still worked till late. He would have loved to see me succeed him and take over the management of the company, but the fate had looked for another way. I wanted to help the world to get rid of some villains. And I want to clear up the disappearance of my childhood love, Uli. That was 10 years ago, but I thought she was still alive. I absolutely had to find her again. So far, all traces fizzled out. A current trace brought me to the capital. After my studies in Hamburg, the beautiful port city, the Department of the Interior employed me as a profiler. That was five months ago.During this time, I was able to solve some tricky missions and help the police, for example, in a kidnapping case of a rich factory owner. My best friend Jimmy was always there for me. We were born in the same year, in the same month. He is the son of the only godfather of the neighbourhood (red-light district in Hamburg). When we were kids, we met at Ju-Jitsu training. We are still going to the training together and are best friends.

Novel horizons analyses how narrative prose fiction developed during the English Restoration. It argues that after 1660, generic changes within dramatic texts occasioned an intense debate within prologues and introductions. This discussion about the poetics of a genre was echoed in the paratextual material of prose fictions. In the absence of an official poetics that defined prose fiction, paratexts fulfilled this function and informed readers about the budding genre. This study traces the piecemeal development of these boundaries and describes the generic competence of readers through the analysis of paratexts and prose fictions.Novel horizons covers the surviving textual material widely, focusing on narrative prose fictions published between 1660 and 1710. In addition to tracing the paratextual poetics of Restoration fiction, this book also covers the state of the art of fiction-writing during the period, discussing character development, narrative point of view and questions of fictionality and realism.

The fall of the Berlin Wall is typically understood as the culmination of political-economic trends that fatally weakened the East German state. Meanwhile, comparatively little attention has been paid to the cultural dimension of these dramatic events, particularly the role played by Western mass media and consumer culture. With a focus on the 1970s and 1980s, Don’t Need No Thought Control explores the dynamic interplay of popular unrest, intensifying economic crises, and cultural policies under Erich Honecker. It shows how the widespread influence of (and public demands for) Western cultural products forced GDR leaders into a series of grudging accommodations that undermined state power to a hitherto underappreciated extent.

Gerd B. Achenbach’s Philosophical Praxis: Origin, Relations, and Legacy, translated by Michael Picard, offers unique insights into the compelling origin and development of what has been called a renaissance of philosophy: a storied trove of thought steeped in tradition, character, and experience, and redeployed in the service of understanding the individual life. Throughout this book, the author explores Philosophical Praxis not only through the tumultuous history of philosophy, but also through psychology, religion, literature, and more. Achenbach’s tone is subtle, humorous, and constantly surprising, demonstrating his intimacy with an expansive spirit of life and leaving behind the narrowness of academic disciplines. As the founder of Philosophical Praxis, Achenbach dissects the challenges faced in current philosophy and psychology and, in doing so, surpasses academic philosophy to reveal the possibility of a new profession for philosophical practitioners seeking to resist the seductions of theory, methods, or solutions, and personify the seriousness of being human.

Yet how American is Billy Wilder, the Jewish émigré from Central Europe?
