Jason Series: Guidelines For Teachers

Jason Series: Guidelines For Teachers

This guideline book was written to inspire teachers with examples of the various ways the Jason Series books can be used in their classrooms. The series includes: Giraffes Do Not Have Pockets, Giraffes Do Not Have Credit Cards, and Giraffes Do Not Have Collateral. The motivation for writing these fun stories was three-fold:1) To instill a love of reading in younger children,2) To establish sound language art skills,3) To create a positive attitude toward economic and financial literacy. Students can learn many of life's lessons as they follow Jason and his friends through a maze of experiences. Teachers can extrapolate various skill sets from the books and teach the basics of reading, economics, financial literacy, and all language arts skills. Each book is scaled in skill development and appropriate reading level. Vocabulary enhancement is a large part of the series development. The author has included lesson plans with requisite grade-level standards but encourages the teachers to mix and match the disciplines integrating them into their teaching environment. This series can be enjoyed at many different levels of K-6.

Jason Langer's Twenty Years pursues a solitary journey through the nocturnal streets and dimly lit rooms of a dream like world. Spanning 20 years of his career, this aptly titled book is the first survey of Langer's work. Included are many previously unpublished images, surrealist experimentation and figure studies, as well as his singular investigation of the city of Berlin. Langer's photographic language has been variously described as cinematic and poetic, haunting and romantic. Best known for his noir visions of contemporary urban life, Langer has photographed not only some of the world's great cities, but intimate scenes as well, ranging from male and female nudes to inanimate objects captured in moments of lifelike feeling. Whatever their subject, his carefully crafted images, rich with lush, black tones, exude an air of vintage, timeless mystery --"as much Hopper and Raymond Chandler as Steichen" (Bomb magazine).

“Jason Moran [is] shaping up to be the most provocative thinker in current jazz.” —Rolling Stone This is the first in-depth publication to investigate the practice of pianist, composer and visual artist Jason Moran, whose work bridges the fields of visual arts and performing arts. As a “torchbearer for jazz,” Moran challenges traditional forms of musical composition; his experimental works merge object and sound, underscoring the theatricality of both mediums. Moran—who often collaborates with prominent visual artists such Joan Jonas, Stan Douglas, Lorna Simpson and Glenn Ligon—pushes beyond the conventions of sculpture and the concert stage while continuing to embrace the essential tenets of jazz and improvisation. This volume, published in conjunction with the Walker Art Center’s 2018 exhibition, considers the artist’s practice and his collaborative works as interdisciplinary investigations that further the fields of experimental jazz and visual art. It features essays by curators, artists, musicians and art historians, plus an interview and photo essay by Moran. These are supplemented by sections documenting the creation of Moran’s mixed-media “set sculptures” including STAGED: Savoy Ballroom 1, STAGED: Three Deuces (both 2015) and STAGED: Slugs (2018). This is an essential volume for anyone interested in the intersection of contemporary art and music. Jason Moran was born in Houston, Texas, in 1975, and received a BM from the Manhattan School of Music in 1997. He joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory in 2010. In 2014, was named artistic director for jazz at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. He was a 2015 Grammy nominee for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for ALL RISE: A Joyful Elegy for Fats Waller, and he composed his first feature film score for Selma (2014), directed by Ava DuVernay.

In 2002 Jason Rhoades (1965-2006) introduced the world to PeaRoeFoam, a "brand new product and revolutionary new material" created from green peas, salmon eggs and white foam. When combined with glue, they transform into a versatile, fast-drying and durable material that he intended for both utilitarian as well as artistic uses. This publication examines and situates the PeaRoeFoam project within Rhoades' career and acknowledges its importance within the framework of his practice. It discusses and reproduces its initial three public presentations and includes archival documents and photographs, installation views of all three shows, as well as diagrams and drawings related to their creation. Also featured are a revealing personal essay by David Zwirner, who began showing Rhoades' work in the early 1990s, new scholarship by Julien Bismuth and selected interviews from the Jason Rhoades Oral History project, conceived by Lucas Zwirner and Dylan Kenny, who have interviewed over 50 artists, curators, friends, collaborators, art historians and others who knew the artist.
