Bodily Fluids, Fluid Bodies and International Politics
In recent years, security actors have become increasingly concerned with health issues. This book reveals how understandings of race, sexuality and gender are produced/reproduced through healthcare policy. Analysing the plasma of paid Mexicana/o donors in the US, airport vomit in Ebola epidemics and the semen of soldiers with genitourinary injuries, this book shows how security practices focus upon governing bodily fluids. Using a variety of critical scholarship – feminist technoscience, queer studies and critical race studies – this book uses fluids to reveal unequal distributions of life and death.

Hate-to-love romance takes center stage in Jenn Bennett's contemporary novels, Alex Approximately and Starry Eyes, now together in one incredible package that's perfect for fans of Jenny Han and Morgan Matson. When the guy you're meant to be with is your worst enemy, things can get a little...complicated. Especially for Bailey in Alex, Approximately after she falls for a sensitive film geek she only knows online as "Alex." It also just so happens that Bailey is moving to California--to the same coastal town as her online crush--and yet she is too afraid to tell Alex she's moved to his hometown. Or that she's landed a job where she's being tormented daily by her coworker: smart-alecky yet irritatingly hot surfer boy Porter Roth. But what Bailey doesn't know is that Porter isn't just any local surfer dude. Porter Roth is Alex...approximately. Trapped in the wilderness with the boy who broke your heart isn't an ideal situation for anyone. And in Starry Eyes, it was definitely not what Zorie had planned for a camping trip. Abandoned by her friends with only her ex-boyfriend Lennon for company, the two have no choice but to hash out their issues via witty jabs and insults as they try to make their way to safety. But as the duo travels deeper into California's rugged backcountry, secrets and hidden feelings surface. Turns out the magic of the twinkling stars might be the key to getting Zorie and Lennon back together--or the last straw to tear them apart for good. Jenn Bennett's popular hate-to-love romances are here to prove that sometimes the one person you can't stand is actually the person of your dreams--you just might not know it yet.

A chauffer's daughter finds herself in the middle of a love triangle with the sons of her boss's wealthy next-door neighbors in this delightfully romantic story from the author of Alex, Approximately, Jenn Bennett. Love--and Fen Sarafian--do not care about your summer plans. Eighteen-year-old chauffeur's daughter Jane Marlow grew up among the domestic staff of a wealthy LA rock producer, within reach of bands she idolizes, but never a VIP. Every summer, Jane and her father head to the Sierras to work at the producer's luxury lodge at Lake Condor--a resort town and the site of a major musical festival. The legendary family who runs the festival are the Sarafians, and Jane's had a longtime crush on their oldest son, Eddie--doltish but sweet. So, when a long-distance romance finally sparks between them, she doesn't hesitate to cross class lines. But Jane's feelings for Eddie are thrown into question after she returns to the lake and reconnects with his alluringly intense brother, the dark horse of her placid summer plans. A fellow lover of music--and hater of the game--Fen Sarafian has been ousted from the family and is slumming it at a vinyl record shop. He burns for Jane like a house on fire and will do anything to sabotage his older brother, even if it means taking a wrecking ball to a multi-million-dollar music festival. Or Jane's heart.

Understanding Gender Violence

Understanding Gender Violence

Jenn Freitag

BLOOMSBURY PUBLISHING PLC
2025

Despite 50 years of activism, legal changes, and crisis service provision, there is no evidence to suggest any widespread decrease in rates of gender violence in the United States. People still experience gender violence at alarming rates, are often not believed, and encounter countless obstacles in navigating medical, criminal justice, media, and other institutional responses to their disclosures. The urgency of addressing the dynamics and causes of situations like these, as well as our failure to catalyze widespread decrease in rates of gender violence, fresh ideas for thinking about gender violence differently. Black Lives Matter, indigenous rights, LGBTIQA rights, and other social justice movements have made it clear how marginalized bodies and identities need to take central stage in gender violence response and prevention efforts. As a movement, we need to do better. But how? This book responds to this question by reframing how we think about the problem of gender violence so that we can address it more collaboratively and effectively. Using a paradigm-shifting comprehensive approach, Freitag offers a new perspective on defining gender violence, considering its impact, and explaining why it occurs. Instead of focusing only on (men’s) violence against women, this text offers a comprehensive definition of gender violence that focuses on gendered dynamics across a wide continuum of behaviors ranging from language and microaggressions to physical violence and murder. The author identifies and digs into the root causes that all forms of gender violence share to facilitate a big picture understanding of how cycles of gender violence continue. She shares personal anecdotes and includes examples of the lived realities of gender violence and its aftermath. She proposes applications of a comprehensive approach for every area of gender violence response and calls for ways to make our work reflexive, collaborative, and sustainable.
