Nick Applegate, a retired math teacher, reads Tennyson, drinks George Dickel bourbon and suffers visions of violence. He and his wife, Joyce, used to teach at Durango High School. She was killed in a school shooting ten years ago. Now, Nick is building a log cabin on Missionary Ridge 12 miles outside the town of Durango, Colorado. There on the ridge, he encounters more than he ever expected. A mysterious man dressed in camouflage revives dark memories of pain and despair. Meredith, a lovely mountain woman who raises beautiful white goats lives just down the road. She offers a different path for his life. Both will play a role in his journey - a journey out of Purgatory. But it is Angela who guides him toward final acceptance. She too was a victim of the shooting. Despite her own grievous wound, she held Joyce in her arms as she died. Angela survived, but still broken. Her speech is slow and slurred. Nick feels like he owes Angela something. The seasons of a whole year pass. Nick struggles to finish his cabin, but now, near the completion of his quest, the sky turns grey with drifting clouds of ash. A conflagration is sweeping toward him and his carefully constructed cabin. Everything is threatened once again. His fears are no longer imaginary. They have become real.

Pencil Shavings captures the heart of school life in America. Inspiring at times but also shining a light on the inadequacies of our school system, the poems examine the emotions teachers, parents, and students experience in school each day.
Face Your Fears is filled with vitality as it challenges the traditional concepts of normalcy, family, disability and love. Nate is a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy raised in a family of achievers. He must be fed, dressed and toileted, yet has unique skills and abilities he gradually becomes aware of. Jude is able-bodied, one of 10 children raised on a hardscrabble Iowa farm. He can change diapers, cook, fix equipment, milk cows, and discovers his vocation as a physical therapist. Both experience tragic teen-age losses, navigate family tragedies, and come to peace with who they are individually as gay men, and eventually together. This book shows how normal comes wrapped in different packages, yet inside each package, people are the same, whether able-bodied, disabled, black, white, brown, green or LGBTQ+.

I encourage you to press like I did in the darkest and masked time. I chose to press. I pressed past the pain and people and was rejoicing as things fell apart. I pressed past side conversations, past being broken and I chose to press toward the higher calling of God in Christ Jesus. I pressed past being afflicted, perplexed, crushed and in despair. I choose to press. Psalm 118:13, "You pushed me violently so that I was falling, but the Lord helped me." As I pressed, I asked the Lord to grace me with not looking like what I was going through. He did it and I'm grateful. As I think, I remembered a simple prayer from years ago. God was just pressing the oil out of me. It had a cost, but I say to you, Luke 12:48, "To whom much is given much is required." Remember, just begin by telling God, thank you. Before I came out, I was still telling Him thank you, even until this day and I will continuously. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

The amateur dramatics club is full of big egos and legends-in-their-own-heads, so their spats aren't unusual. But when the theatre owner is shot dead during the christmas play, it's santa who pulls the trigger. With the arrival of an unwelcome ex, a petition to end discrimination against spirits, and a second attack by st nick, the chances of a quiet christmas seem to be quickly disappearing. Christmas is the most important holiday of the year. After the corresponding days that exalt the national pride of each country, such as independence day in the united states, victory day in russia, or bastille day in france, it's december 25 that articulates the life, the work and the economy in much of the world, including many non-christian countries. Since ancient times, the beginning of winter has been the occasion for most people to eat, drink, dance, and get together to beat the drum and take a break.Ever since, santa has been known the world over for being delightfully paunchy and endlessly jolly. To most, these two descriptors alone are enough to conjure up his name, and lead them to envision a round-bellied, grandfather-type, clad in a fur-trimmed, cherry-red ensemble, armed with candy canes and a bottomless sack of presents, and blessed with a bushy, silvery-white beard.
Christmas is at the center of these short stories collected in the latest book by author Andrew Mathis. Featuring the award-winning short story Christmas Surprise, these stories capture the twists, turns, hope and disappointment many find during the holiday season.
This inter-planetary, multidimensional sci-fi epic opens in contemporary Oakland, where Danny, a member of the mysterious Shadow Clan, is being questioned by Paranormal Task Force Detective Ernie Benasco over the bombing of a witch coven. Danny's brother, Tuyouk, is the chief suspect; Ernie wants answers, but rather than offer them up, Danny recounts events from Tuyouk's past--events that transpired on another planet, Ahman-tahk, centuries ago. There, Tuyouk was a shape-shifting warrior fighting against an invasion of witches whose leader, Belall, decimated Tuyouk's race by cursing the women of his planet. But it's not until Tuyouk is captured by Belall that he realizes how monstrous and complicated she truly is.
Plays of Yore: A Collection of Three One-Act Plays

Plays of Yore is a collection of three one act plays: A Comedy of Pregnant Women, Mayfair and The New Play Everyman. The plays are romps through medieval England, ribald, full of puns, fun to watch and even more fun to perform. This book now makes available, free of charge, these original plays to all community, non-profit theater groups. Easy to stage, utilizing minimal sets and small casts, the plays are perfect for black box theater venues or other small stage events. A Comedy of Pregnant Women, written in blank verse ala Shakespeare, follows the twisting tale of three pregnant women as they scheme to ensnare the man who impregnated them. In true Elizabethan style, the jokes are raunchy and the plot is ridiculously complicated, but the spirit is always in fun and the ending is happy. In Mayfair, we see a similar tale, but turned on its head. Three men love one woman, but in vastly different ways. The play is written in rhyming couplets and much of the fun is in the language, though the story contains a powerful moral about what love really means. Again, this tale is intended for mature audiences. The New Play Everyman is rendered in prose and modern language. But the story is a classic tale from the middle ages. This updated version of the medieval play, Everyman, has a more somber tone, but has many fine, comedic moments. This play is suitable for all ages, and, indeed, has been performed by a high school group. All three plays are uplifting comedies, reaffirming the innate compassion of human beings tossed about in a universe of folly and foibles. The world of Plays of Yore is a world of energy, engagement and, ultimately, smiles.

When Christine Mathis was a little girl during World War 2, her father decided to pursue his pacifist ideals by enlisting the family in a fundamentalist Christian community. The community was run by the Brudehof, an obsessive, extremist sect which exercised ridged control over every aspect of members' lives, from what they were allowed to read and talk about to whom they could marry. During the years that followed, Christine found herself enduring emotional and physical abuse, and regularly ostracised for daring to have a mind of her own. She eventually found the courage to break her ties with the Brudehof, at the cost of being cut off from her family. Finally, after a mature woman, she was able to begin the search for genuine love and happiness by setting out to build a family of her own.
