Matthew, Mark, Luke, John… and Me

Matthew, Mark, Luke, John… and Me

Arthur Ullian

Bauhan (William L.),U.S.
2020
nidottu
Following a life-changing accident that left him paralyzed at age 51, Arthur Ullian began to realize that not only did life in a wheelchair make him feel “different,” but he had always felt like an outsider to some degree, having grown up Jewish in the elite WASP world of prep schools, cotillion classes, sailing yachts, and restricted clubs. He also came to see that over the course of his life he had, paradoxically, internalized the prevailing Christian view of the “Jewish character” and unconsciously attempted to replicate the social and material trappings of those who excluded him. In Matthew, Mark, Luke, John… and Me - a thoughtful, historically-grounded, and often humorous memoir - he interweaves personal experience with an exploration of the roots of ethnic stereotypes and antisemitism, ending with reasons to hope that historic Jewish–Christian enmities will fade and brotherhood eventually prevail.

Catalog for an exhibition of Matthew Metzger’s paintings at the Renaissance Society. Published on the occasion of Matthew Metzger’s exhibition Heirloom at the Renaissance Society, this is the first book dedicated to the artist’s paintings, which echo and explore various kinds of abstraction. Anchored by the new paintings Metzger made for this exhibition—a set of works conceived as an installation for the Renaissance Society’s space that also serve as the subject of an essay by curator Karsten Lund—the book also features four other series of paintings by the artist, each of which further charts his evolving aesthetic and conceptual strategies. For this publication, Metzger has also invited six writers—including Kris Cohen, Fumi Okiji, Hamza Walker, Jan Verwoert, and Anna Zett—to reflect on how abstraction functions more broadly, whether as a psychological tendency, a social phenomenon, or a technological side effect, among many other possibilities.

Matthew Connors & Lucy Ives: The Poetics
A superbly made hybrid photobook on the stories that objects invite us to tell In July of 2017, photographer Matthew Connors (born 1976) and novelist and critic Lucy Ives (born 1980) embarked on a strange project: to remove and catalog all the contents of Connors's car, a 1992 Volvo 240 station wagon. Although the New York–based duo began the endeavor without knowing where it would lead, their investigation—of parts, tools, ephemera, litter, personal items, unidentifiable disjecta, among other objects—lasted more than two years and resulted in a series of photographs by Connors and an essay by Ives on narrative forms and temporalities inherent to contemporary media. This collaborative publication, designed by Elana Schlenker, poses questions about where narrative originates and how we establish our stories in relation to the objects and timescales that carry, ground and surround us.

Matthew Beck: Event
A cultural history of the sublime first image of a black hole, in photographs and documents “Peering into Light’s Graveyard: The First Image of the Black Hole,” read the New York Times' April 11 cover story. The headline, like many others that day, was accompanied by an image of a glowing celestial ring framed by infinite blackness: the first image of a black hole. In his first book, New York photographer Matthew Beck (born 1986) focuses on the unveiling of this previously unseeable image by following it into the depths of the New York City subway. The book suggests the notion that the cosmos is not something to simply be observed from our vantage point as humans, but more a system that we are intrinsically a part of; and the true nature of the black hole seems to be as elusive as the answer to humanity’s most pressing question of “why.”
