This paper will introduce us to the so-called "cryptocurrencies", or "digital currencies". Perhaps they will not be, as their advocates propose, "as big as the printing press", but their development bequeathed a great tool: blockchains as public data structures (or shared to all members of a network) applicable to old and new legal and civic operations. Among them, "Bitcoin" stands out for now, which is an electronic currency, a protocol and a software, inspired by the crypto-anarchist manifesto written by Timothy C. May in 1992, in which he proposed the creation of a crypto-currency. May in 1992, in which he proposed the creation of a network of users that eliminates all types of state or private intermediation. May claimed that the impact of the creation of such a network, safeguarded by the use of encryption, would weaken the power of financial institutions just as the printing press weakened the power of medieval guilds. His prophecy came true, although it remains to be seen whether it will have an impact similar to that of the printing press, Bitcoin brought the ideas of the crypto-anarch manifesto to reality and turned them into a real system through blockchain technology.

Criminology has focused mainly on problems of crime and violence in the large population centres of the Global North to the exclusion of the global countryside, peripheries and antipodes. Southern criminology is an innovative new approach that seeks to correct this bias. This book turns the origin stories of criminology, which simply assumed a global universality, on their head. It draws on a range of case studies to illustrate this point: tracing criminology’s long fascination with dangerous masculinities back to Lombroso’s theory of atavism, itself based on an orientalist interpretation of men of colour from the Global South; uncovering criminology’s colonial legacy, perhaps best exemplified by the over-representation of Indigenous peoples in settler societies drawn into the criminal justice system; analysing the ways in which the sociology of punishment literature has also been based on Northern theories, which assume that forms of penalty roll out from the Global North to the rest of the world; and making the case that the harmful effects of eco-crimes and global warming are impacting more significantly on the Global South. The book also explores how the coloniality of gender shapes patterns of violence in the Global South.Southern criminology is not a new sub-discipline within criminology, but rather a journey toward cognitive justice. It promotes a perspective that aims to invent methods and concepts that bridge global divides and enhance the democratisation of knowledge, more befitting of global criminology in the twenty-first century.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Throughout his long, hectic and astonishingly varied life, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) would jot down his passing thoughts on theatre programmes, visiting cards, draft manuscripts and even bills … Goethe was probably the last true ‘Renaissance Man’. Although employed as a Privy Councillor at the Duke of Weimar’s court, where he helped oversee major mining, road-building and irrigation projects, he also painted, directed plays, carried out research in anatomy, botany and optics – and still found time to produce masterpieces in every literary genre. His fourteen hundred Maxims and Reflections reveal some of his deepest thought on art, ethics, literature and natural science, but also his immediate reactions to books, chance encounters or his administrative work. Although variable in quality, the vast majority have a freshness and immediacy which vividly conjure up Goethe the man. They make an ideal introduction to one of the greatest of European writers.

Maxim Gorky, born Aleksei Maksimovich Peshkov in 1868 to the low stratum of Russian society, rose to prominence early in life as a writer and publicist. Gorky, who did not have a formal education, became famous in his country and abroad. Writing could not satisfy the rebellious Gorky who soon became involved in revolutionary movements. After a short period with the populist/narodnik movement, Gorky became disillusioned with the peasant class, and, instead, he chose the nascent class of workers as the vehicle for change. It is as if Gorky and capitalism arrived in Russia together. In his view the intelligentsia and the workers would bring about the change in the political, social, and cultural life of the country. Gorky came close to Lenin and the Bolsheviks, taking an active part in the Revolution of 1905 and going into an exile that lasted until 1913. Gorky, returning home on the eve of World War I and the following revolutions of February and October 1917, became involved in the momentous developments. He vehemently opposed Lenin's socialist revolution, maintaining that Russia was not ready for it. A second exile followed in 1921. After returning in 1928 to Stalin's Soviet Union, Gorky was made into an icon, with the eye of the inquisition watching over him. And here began what is often called The Tragedy of Maxim Gorky. He died in 1936, but the circumstances of his death as well as the question whither Gorky is still debated Based on hitherto unavailable primary sources, Yedlin has cut through the Gorky legend to show the real person, the Gorky of contradictions and oscillations. Fascinating reading for scholars and students of Russian history and literature as well as the general public.

This new work by Wilfred Kaplan, the distinguished author of influential mathematics and engineering texts, is destined to become a classic. Timely, concise, and content-driven, it provides an intermediate-level treatment of maxima, minima, and optimization. Assuming only a background in calculus and some linear algebra, Professor Kaplan presents topics in order of difficulty. In four short chapters, he describes basic concepts and geometric aspects of maxima and minima, progresses to problems with side conditions, introduces optimization and programming, and concludes with an in-depth discussion of research topics involving the duality theorems of Fenchel and Rockafellar. Throughout the text, the subject of convexity is gradually developed—from its theoretical underpinnings to problems, and finally, to its role in applications. Other features include: *A strong emphasis on practical applications of maxima and minima *An impressive array of supporting topics such as numerical analysis *An ample number of examples and problems *More than 60 illustrations highlighting the text *Algorithms to reinforce concepts *An appendix reviewing the prerequisite linear algebra Maxima and Minima with Applications is an ideal text for upper-undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in operations research, management, general engineering, and applied mathematics. It can also be used to supplement courses on linear and nonlinear optimization. This volume's broad scope makes it an excellent reference for professionals wishing to learn more about cutting-edge topics in optimization and mathematical programming.
