Season of Terror is the first book-length treatment of the little-known true story of the Espinosas—serial murderers with a mission to kill every Anglo in Civil War–era Colorado Territory—and the men who brought them down. For eight months during the spring and fall of 1863, brothers Felipe Nerio and José Vivián Espinosa and their young nephew, José Vincente, New Mexico–born Hispanos, killed and mutilated an estimated thirty-two victims before their rampage came to a bloody end. Their motives were obscure, although they were members of the Penitentes, a lay Catholic brotherhood devoted to self-torture in emulation of the sufferings of Christ, and some suppose they believed themselves inspired by the Virgin Mary to commit their slaughters. Until now, the story of their rampage has been recounted as lurid melodrama or ignored by academic historians. Featuring a fascinating array of frontier characters, Season of Terror exposes this neglected truth about Colorado’s past and examines the ethnic, religious, political, military, and moral complexity of the controversy that began as a regional incident but eventually demanded the attention of President Lincoln.

After a chance encounter with terrorism at JFK leaves her snapping photos instead of fleeing, celebrated novelist Marielle finds herself thrust into the Witness Protection program--stripped of her vibrant life and identity. With only her cat for company, Marielle plans her comeback with a sensational novel--until she discovers a fraudulent "posthumous" book bearing her name. Breaking cover, Marielle embarks on a perilous quest for truth, enlisting the aid of an eclectic crew including a young musician, Buddhist monks, and her stalwart ex-lover, Fresh. Against all odds, Marielle is determined to reclaim her name and her life in this thrilling story of courage, identity, and resilience. "With more twists and turns than a coiled snake, Season of Eclipse is also a deep examination of who we are and what happens to us when we can't be the person we thought we were. Both make this thriller hard to put down." -- J.M. Redmann, the Micky Knight mystery series "Plucked out of her own life and plunged into witness-protection-program obscurity, Marielle Wing has the guts to activate her ire and her creative imagination to try to win back her name, all while discovering some rough truths about the life she left behind. She does this with the aid of one of the most deliciously irksome young women ever to appear on the page: Tuna, who might bring Marielle to new life if she doesn't kill her first. Terry Wolverton's Season of Eclipse is a fun and subversively serious novel about finding yourself while losing yourself, in spite of yourself." -David Groff, author of Live in Suspense "Terry Wolverton's Season of Eclipse is a wild ride of a thriller, with a protagonist who's as lovable as she is flawed. Marielle Wing witnesses a bombing and then is forced to go into hiding, with several ensuing changes of location and identity. Who is a friend and who is a foe? We don't know until the exciting conclusion. Rooting for them all the way, we follow Marielle and her cat Dude through a maze of danger and conspiracy. Don't begin reading this book in the evening unless you plan to stay up all night " -- Alice Bloch, Mother/Daughter Banquet "A page turning thriller from award winning author Terry Wolverton. A terrorist event changes novelist Marielle's life and outlook forever as she finds wisdom and help in unexpected places." -- Katherine Rupley, author, Antarctica "Season of Eclipse is a thrill ride through the trust-no-one aftermath of a terrorist attack, and a meditation on the nature of self. Reading this novel is at once a shot of adrenaline and a deep, cleansing breath." -- Cheryl E. Klein, author, Crybaby: Infertility, Illness, and Other Things That Were Not the End of the World "Who is Marielle Wing, and how does she stay ahead of an enemy that knows her every move and mistake? And as fragile relationships hang in the balance and close alliances shift, Marielle must test the limits of what she's capable of to find the truth. This thrilling novel is one that you can't wait to find out what happens next, and yet, also want to read slowly and savor the delicious sentences. Will Marielle survive?" -- Kathleen Brady, author, Language of Light It's the perfect thriller for readers who have a familiarity with the publishing industry, with plenty of familiar thriller tropes and coincidences recalibrated to fit the scale of a frustrated novelist's life. It's an offbeat premise, to be sure, and Wolverton manages to deliver across the board. A literary airport novel that flies its readers to unexpected destinations.--Kirkus Reviews

Born to the daughter of an English Lord in Colonial America as the result of rape by a Delaware Indian, Rafe continually endures the slurs of the other colonists. Despite the abuse he remains true to his faith in God until he accidentally kills his only friend. Then he begins to wonder if what everyone says about him is true. Will the downward spiral into iniquity that follows convince Rafe to accept Satan's lies that he's irredeemable and rejected by God? Or will he eventually accept the ultimate truth of God's unconditional love?Season of Defiance by Susan D. Schroeder is an inspirational story that puts one man's life before his conscience and God, exploring the theme of loss, sin, and redemption. But it's the spiritual and self-doubt aspect that captivated me. Rafe is a man who has been called all sorts of things, considered as an abomination and a demon spawn by everyone around him. But deep inside, he yearns for goodness and a life intimately connected to God. But when he accidentally kills his only true friend, he knows hell is opening its doors for him. Even if he never meant to kill his friend, Rafael Zacharias Brookstone, the half-breed Lord is eaten up by guilt and sets out on a path of redemption, but could there ever be any such thing as redemption for him? Here is a story that explores some of the powerful spiritual questions that haunt the human mind and readers will undoubtedly find themselves mirrored in the conscience of the protagonist. Susan D. Schroeder is a great storyteller and she masterfully knits a wonderful message into the fabric of this compelling story. Season of Defiance has a gripping plot and a compelling cast of characters. The gift of descriptive prose allows the setting to come out perfectly in readers' minds and it is interesting to notice the colorful descriptions of the weather and images such as the sun shining generously on the "wigwams of the peaceful Mohican village deep in the Massachusetts." The conflict is deep and it is developed at different levels -- physical and internal -- but it is the internal conflict, taking place in the protagonist's mind, that had me captivated and enthused. This is a beautiful story that is well-paced, entertaining and inspiring. You'll find your soul navigating the pages of this book. Ruffina Oserio for Readers' Favorite

A major new novel set in nineteenth-century New Orleans by the author of Signs Preceding the End of the World New Orleans, 1853. A young exile named Benito Ju rez disembarks at a fetid port city at the edge of a swamp. Years later, he will become the first indigenous head of state in the postcolonial Americas, but now he is as anonymous and invisible as any other migrant to the roiling and alluring city of New Orleans. Accompanied by a small group of fellow exiles who plot their return and hoped-for victory over the Mexican dictatorship, Ju rez immerses himself in the city, which absorbs him like a sponge. He and his compatriots work odd jobs, suffer through the heat of a southern summer, fall victim to the cons and confusions of a strange young nation, succumb to the hallucinations of yellow fever, and fall in love with the music and food all around them. But unavoidable, too, is the grotesque traffic in human beings they witness as they try to shape their future. Though the historical archive is silent about the eighteen months Ju rez spent in New Orleans, Yuri Herrera imagines how Ju rez's time there prepared him for what was to come. With the extraordinary linguistic play and love of popular forms that have characterized all of Herrera's fiction, Season of the Swamp is a magnificent work of speculative history, a love letter to the city of New Orleans and its polyglot culture, and a cautionary statement that informs our understanding of the world we live in.

When the season for guarding sea turtle nests on Oak Island, North Carolina, began that year, Aubrey Benson struggled to find her usual passion. Rebuffed by her teenage daughter, Sunny, and threatened by her ex with a custody change, she was weary of her life and certainly in no mood for romance. The big, homeless war veteran probably meant to be helpful, but Aubrey distrusted him from their first meeting. It took days of working together on the beach for her to accept, then admire and, finally, to love Tom Clayton. But a sexual assailant is stalking the sleepy coastal community, and Tom fits the description of the attacker. Aubrey struggles to prove to herself and others that her faith in Tom is justified. All the while, a predator is closing in, and a dark, deserted beach is the perfect setting for danger.
