‘An absolute joy to read… Plenty of humour and romance… A glorious read that I devoured in a couple of afternoons in the garden. I was able to lose myself in the story… Fabulous’ NetGalley review ????? One blind date. One chance encounter. One-life changing moment. Ella is in the business of making brides’ dreams come true with yards of white tulle, delicate lace and sparkly sequins. But Ella’s own love life couldn’t be further from a fairy tale. Recently dumped by her boyfriend and with her best friend’s wedding only months away, Ella feels more alone than ever so she finally accepts her friends’ offers to set her up on a blind date. The Ecology of Sandy Shores, Third Edition, provides both a holistic and conceptual introduction for beginners, while also presenting an in-depth and cutting-edge analysis for researchers interested in sandy shores. This new edition focuses on resource use, and has also been updated to include recent findings, enhanced illustrations, and additional coverage on beach fisheries and global/climate change. In addition, this release presents insights on food webs, greater coverage on global biodiversity patterns in sandy beaches, and new insights on population patterns, behavior and threats. Research on beaches is difficult because of the dynamic nature of the environment. There is no other book covering the ecology of sandy beaches, despite the extent and economic importance of these systems. This book is designed to both provide the conceptual basis to introduce students to the basic principles of sandy shore ecology and to serve as a ready reference for doctoral students and researches working on these systems. It can also serve as a handbook for land and coastal managers.

The Ecology of Sandy Shores, Fourth Edition provides both a holistic and conceptual introduction for the beginner, yet at the same time gives an in-depth and cutting-edge analysis for the researcher interested in sandy shores. There is no other book covering the ecology of sandy beaches, despite the extent and economic importance of these systems. This guide is designed to both introduce students to the basic principles of sandy shore ecology, to serve as a ready reference for doctoral students and researchers working on these systems, and to provide a handbook for land and coastal managers. This new edition will focus on humans as part of the sandy beach environment, including aspects such as global change in coastal systems and its impacts on sandy littoral zones through ‘coastal squeeze’. Further, prominence will be given to resource use, such as artisanal fisheries and to the critical area of coastal zone management and governance. Considering these two main issues, the concept of sandy beaches as social-ecological systems will be developed together with an illustrative framework related to this approach.

In this striking picture book biography, an old-timer tells us what made Sandy Koufax such an amazing baseball player. We learn that the beginning of his career with the Brooklyn Dodgers was rocky, that he was shy with his teammates, and experienced discrimination as one of the only Jews in the game. We hear that he actually quit, only to return the next season different firing one rocket after another over the plate. We watch him refuse to play in the 1965 World Series because it is a Jewish high holy day. And we see him in pain because of an overused left arm, eventually retiring at the peak of his career. Finally, we are told that people are still scratchin their heads over Sandy, who remains a modest hero and a mystery to this day. Accompanied by sidebars filled with statistics, this "Parents" Magazine Best Book of the Year and "Booklist" Top of the List is sure to delight budding baseball fans."
The extraordinary Memoirs of Sandy McLennan, Gambler
"Sandy" McLennan 1860-1943, a gifted mathematician with a good memory, from 1890 based his family in London and from there he had a life around the world mixing with the rich and famous, including some of the greatest gamblers of his time. He took many voyages between Britain and New York. He was a close friend and gambling partner of the famous "plunger" Riley Grannan and also of the jockey (and gambler) Tod Sloan. It is Tod Sloan who is credited with having changed the way jockeys "sit" during a race: the so called "Monkey on a stick" style, with short stirrups. He was often sharing suites of rooms in some of the grandest hotels with his gambling friends. He not only travelled to New York, but also to Paris, Monte Carlo, Northern England, Cuba, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles etc.As a younger man in Australia he had a number of adventures and met men who would go on to be world champion boxers. He reflects on boxers' lives and culture. He would meet them again in different parts of the world: Jim Hall, Ted Pritchard, James J Corbett, Charles Mitchell, Bob Fitzsimmons, James J Jeffries and many more. He met and befriended many actors and others in the theatre world: Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, DeWolf Hopper, Nat Goodwin, Sarah Bernhardt, Frank Lawton and others. His memory for the poems of Robbie Burns opened many doors. He met and became close friends with John Rockefeller Senior, the richest man on earth, who proposed that Sandy and himself should spend their twilight days together. He played golf in many parts of the world - including a month in Colorado with Walter J Travis - who is credited with sparking the interest in golf in the USA.On one hand of poker cards he lost 12,000 to an American champagne millionaire - taking inflation into account, about $3,400,000 in today's money.Known in his home town as "The man who broke the Bank at Monte Carlo", these extraordinary personal memoirs, written in his own hand, were preserved for many decades by his grand-daughter Olive in London. He wrote some of the memoirs under his nom de plume: Alec Hassell.Published for www.clanmaclennan-worldwide.com/genealogy

From a beloved master of crime fiction, A Tan and Sandy Silence is one of many classic novels featuring Travis McGee, the hard-boiled detective who lives on a houseboat. Travis McGee is unnerved when he receives an unexpected guest--real estate developer Harry Broll, who is convinced that McGee is hiding his missing wife. Angry and jealous, Harry gets off a shot before McGee can wrestle his gun away. The thing is, McGee hasn't seen or heard from Mary Broll in three years, and it isn't like her to keep troubles to herself--if she's alive to tell them. "As a young writer, all I ever wanted was to touch readers as powerfully as John D. MacDonald touched me."--Dean Koontz McGee is a heartbeat away from crisis. He's getting older, Lady Jillian Brent-Archer is trying to make him settle down, and he's just been shot without fair warning. Nervous that he's losing his touch, McGee decides to get Harry off his case and prove he's still in top form all in one fell swoop. McGee's search for Mary takes him to Grenada, where he's soon tangling with con artists and terrifying French killers, not to mention a slew of mixed motives. No longer wallowing in self-pity, McGee has more pressing concerns--like saving his own skin. Features a new Introduction by Lee Child
