Eliot is called upon to become the completely public man. He gives talks, lectures, readings and broadcasts, and even school prize-day addresses. As editor and publisher, his work is unrelenting, commissioning works ranging from Michael Roberts's The Modern Mind to Elizabeth Bowen's anthology The Faber Book of Modern Stories. Other letters reveal Eliot's delight in close friends such as John Hayward, Virginia Woolf and Polly Tandy, and his colleagues Geoffrey Faber and Frank Morley, as well as his growing troupe of godchildren - to whom he despatches many of the verses that will ultimately be gathered up in Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (1939). The volume covers his separation from first wife Vivien, and tells the full story of the decision taken by her brother, following the best available medical advice, to commit her to an asylum - after she had been found wandering in the streets of London. All the while these numerous strands of correspondence are being played out, Eliot struggles to find the time to compose his second play, The Family Reunion (1939), which is finally completed in 1938.

T.S. Eliot - editor, poet, critic and publisher - was the greatest poet of his generation. The winner of the 1948 Nobel Prize for Literature, virtually every English language poet since owes him a debt of gratitude. Voted as Britain's favourite poet in a 2009 BBC poll, Eliot selected and designed this collection himself in 1954 as an introduction to his work for new readers.Containing 'The Waste Land' and 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock', Selected Poems is the perfect way to begin with one of the defining figures of the twentieth century. This edition also features an introductory essay by Seamus Heaney.

Times Literary Supplement Book of the YearPegasus Award for Poetry Criticism, Poetry Foundation, ChicagoRichard J. Finneran Award, Society for Textual ScholarshipBest Scholarly Edition Award, Modernist Studies AssociationThe Poems of T. S. Eliot is the authoritative edition of one of our greatest poets, scrupulously edited by Christopher Ricks and Jim McCue. It provides, for the first time, a fully scrutinized text of Eliot's poems, carefully restoring accidental omissions and removing textual errors that have crept in over the full century in which Eliot has been so frequently printed and reprinted. The edition also presents many poems from Eliot's youth which were published only decades later, as well as others that saw only private circulation in his lifetime, of which dozens are collected for the first time. To accompany Eliot's poems, Christopher Ricks and Jim McCue have provided a commentary that illuminates the creative activity that came to constitute each poem, calling upon drafts, correspondence and other original materials to provide a vivid account of the poet's working processes, his reading, his influences and his revisions. The first volume respects Eliot's decisions by opening with his Collected Poems 1909-1962 in the form in which he issued it, shortly before his death fifty years ago. There follow in this first volume the uncollected poems from his youth that he had chosen to publish, along with such other poems as could be considered suitable for publication. The second volume opens with the two books of poems of other kinds that he issued, Old Possum's Book of Practical Catsand his translation of Perse's Anabase, moving then to verses privately circulated as informal or improper or clubmanlike. Each of these sections is accompanied by its respective commentary, and then, pertaining to the entire edition, there is a comprehensive textual history recording variants both manuscript and published. The Poems of T. S. Eliot is a work of enlightening scholarship that will delight and inform all those who read Eliot for pleasure, as well as all those who read with pleasure and for study. Here are a new accuracy and an unparalleled insight into the marvels and landmarks from The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and The Waste Land through to Four Quartets.

The Letters of T. S. Eliot Volume 9
This volume covers the production of Eliot's play The Family Reunion; the publication of The Idea of a Christian Society; and the joyous versifying of Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. After exhausting himself through nights of fire-watching in the London wartime blackout, he travels the country, attends meetings of The Moot, delivers talks, and advises a fresh generation of writers including Cyril Connolly, Keith Douglas, Kathleen Raine and Vernon Watkins. Major correspondents include W. H. Auden, George Barker, William Empson, Geoffrey Faber, John Hayward, James Laughlin, Hope Mirrlees, Mervyn Peake, Ezra Pound, Michael Roberts, Stephen Spender, Tambimuttu, Allen Tate, Michael Tippett, Charles Williams and Virginia Woolf. Four Quartets, Eliot's culminating masterpiece, is discussed in detail.
Letters of T. S. Eliot Volume 10: 1942–1944
'What is accomplished by this sort of cultural warfare is impossible to say: but it [is] a part of total warfare which one must, as an individual, accept one's part in.'At the height of the Second World War, T. S. Eliot commits himself to fighting for the cultural values of Europe. He goes on a lecture tour of Sweden; he writes talks for the BBC; he reads poems for the Czechoslovak Centre, for 'Aid to Russia' and for the 'French in Britain Fund'. He lectures on 'The Music of Poetry' in Glasgow; addresses the Classical Association; talks at the 'Moot', and visits organisations including the Anglo-Swedish Society and the British-Norwegian Institute; and he works for the Christian News-Letter. He serves as President of the English Circle of 'Books Across the Sea' and as first President of the Virgil Society. He feels exhausted by travel and performance but remains stalwart. And always there is the threat in London - he has 'no regular habitation' - of being bombed: 'I have taken . . . to sleeping in my teeth.'Contacts and correspondents during these dark days include the film director George Hollering for whom he struggles to adapt his play Murder in the Cathedral, Kenneth Clark, Henry Moore, David Jones, William Empson, Mary Trevelyan, Karl Mannheim, Louis MacNeice, Elizabeth Bowen, M. J. Tambimuttu, Edith Sitwell and Reinhold Niebuhr. Notable poets recruited to the Faber fold include Lawrence Durrell, Anne Ridler and Norman Nicholson.Eliot's own creative energies are focused on completing Little Gidding, the final poem of the supernal sequence Four Quartets. The series of letters to John Hayward, who advises him, is a tour de force of the art: full of news, merriment and mischief.

One of the most influential poets of the twentieth century, T. S. Eliot is generally regarded as a leading exponent of the literary movement which came to be known as Modernism. In this volume, Harriet Davidson collects key recent essays by such internationally renowned critics as Terry Eagleton, Sandra Gilbert, Jacqueline Rose, Jeffrey Perl, Christine Froula, Maud Ellmann, and Michael North, placing Eliot's work centrally in the context of postmodern critical theory.Eliot's writing is often perceived as incompatible with or resistant to new theoretical approaches, but this volume demonstrates the continuity between Eliot's own theoretical writings and contemporary theory, and illuminates his poetry with imaginative readings from deconstructive, Marxist, psychoanalytic, and feminist perspectives. Headnotes to the essays and a bibliography which lists other informative readings make this book an invaluable guide to all students of twentieth-century poetry, and to scholars interested in the relationship between critical and creative writing.

T-Shirt Swim Club: Stories from Being Fat in a World of Thin People
NATIONAL BESTSELLER - Comedian Ian Karmel, with help from his sister, Dr. Alisa Karmel, opens up about the daily humiliations of being fat and why it's so hard to talk about something so visible. "As charming and funny as it is poignant and thoughtful."--Roxane Gay, author of Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body Ian Karmel has weighed eight pounds and he has weighed 420 pounds and right now he's almost exactly in between the two, but this book is not a weight-loss book. It's about being a fat person in a skinny world. It's about gym class and football practice, about chicken wings and juice cleanses, about airplane seats and roller coasters, about fat jokes and Jabba the Hutt, about crying in the Big and Tall section and the joys of being a sneakerhead, about prediabetes and gout, and about realizing that you actually don't want to eat yourself to death and hoping it's not too late. This book also includes a "What Now?" section from Ian's sister, Alisa, who herself cycled through so many fad diets that she eventually pursued a master's in nutrition and a doctorate in psychology with the goal of changing the contemporary narrative around fatness. Ian and Alisa Karmel grew up fat. As kids, they never talked about it. They were too busy fighting over the last SnackWell's Devil's Food cookie. Now, decades later, having both turned into fat adults who eventually figured out how to get their health under control, they are finally ready to unpack the impact that their weight has had on them. For them, the T-Shirt Swim Club is meant to be a place of support for anyone who struggles with weight issues. A place of care and candor, free of shame. A place to not deny or avoid the emotions you feel, the experiences you go through, the embarrassment, the anger, the resentment. T-Shirt Swim Club is about being a fat person and how the world treats fat people--but also an acknowledgment that maybe it doesn't always have to feel quite so lonely.

Alzina Stone Dale gives us ...an excellent review of T.S. Eliot's entire career and it has the important virtue of showing how absolutely integral to his poetic achievements were his religious interests. It is ...a critical biography that makes just the right sort of book for marking the centennial of Eliot's birth."--Nathan A. Scott
