Urban theory traditionally links modernity to the city, to the historical emergence of certain forms of subjectivity and the rise of important developments in culture, arts and architecture. This is often in response to technological, economic and societal transformations in the nineteenth- and early twentieth-centuries in select Euro-American metropolises. In contrast, non-Western cities in the modern period are often considered through the lens of Westernization and development. How do we account for urban modernity in "other" cities?This book seeks to highlight cultural creativity by examining the diverse and shifting ways Istanbulites have defined themselves while they debate, imagine, build and consume their city. It focuses on a series of exhibitionary sites, from print press/photography, cinema/films, exhibitions of architectural heritage, theme parks and museums, and explores the links between these popular depictions through shared practices of representation. It examines how wealthy agriculturalists, industrialists, lawyers, merchants, and railroad leaders manipulated the state’s political, economic, and social structures to assert dominance and maintain white supremacy, undermining the power gained by African Americans during Reconstruction. By the mid-1890s, however, Black and white Republicans and supporters of the smaller Peoples' Party formed a coalition known as fusion, upending two decades of the Democratic Party’s white elite political domination in North Carolina. After four years, the Democratic Party mobilized under the menacing banner of white supremacy and, led by conservative, pro-business white people, restored the party’s control over the state government. Craig Thurtell contends that an examination of this period reveals that race was not the sole factor in the Democratic Party’s quest for control. Instead, elite white men sought to establish a new social order influenced by class divisions, and Short of a Revolution provides a comprehensive analysis of these dynamics, revealing the multifaceted motivations behind the political shifts of late nineteenth-century North Carolina.

Identified as "the first designer of what would become known as Swedish Modern" by the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., Karin Bergoo Larsson (1859-1928) was a mother of eight and wife to Sweden's beloved painter, Carl Larsson. Herself a well-regarded artist, she gave up painting when she married, at the request of her husband. Taking up needles and cloth, she then turned a somewhat ugly cottage--Lilla Hyttnas in the tiny village of Sundborn, Sweden--into a designer showcase. Inspired by the Swedish countryside, she filled the home with handcrafted wall hangings, bed coverings, tablecloths, pillow covers and even furniture of her own design, while greatly influencing her husband's work by encouraging him to move away from dark oils to more illuminating and light-filled watercolors. His paintings of their home made her interior designs famous, and her influence continues to inform the concepts of retail giant IKEA.

Born into an important Jewish-Austrian family, Ida Bauer Adler suffered from "petite hysteria"--loss of voice, difficulty breathing, migraines, fainting spells--brought on by the overt sexuality of her relatives. Growing up in a home beset with syphilis and tuberculosis, she overcame her father's marital infidelity, her mother's so-called housewife psychosis and her own seduction by the husband of her father's mistress. She married, raised a son, started a small business, stayed close with her brother, Otto, leader of the Austrian Socialist party, and survived Hitler's invasion of Vienna. Eventually, she made her way to the U.S. to rejoin her famous son, maestro of the San Francisco Opera House.
