Writing the Book of the World

Writing the Book of the World

Theodore Sider

In order to perfectly describe the world, it is not enough to speak truly. In this ambitious and ground-breaking book, Theodore Sider argues that for a representation to be fully successful, truth is not enough; the representation must also use the right concepts--concepts that 'carve at the joints'--so that its conceptual structure matches reality's structure. There is an objectively correct way to 'write the book of the world'. According to Sider, metaphysics is primarily about fundamentality rather than necessity, conceptual analysis, or ontology. Fundamentality is understood in terms of structure: the fundamental truths are those truths that involve structural (joint-carving) concepts. Sider argues that part of the theory of structure is an account of how structure connects to other concepts. For example, structure can be used to illuminate laws of nature, explanation, reference, induction, physical geometry, substantivity, conventionality, objectivity, and metametaphysics. Another part is an account of how structure behaves. Since structure is a way of thinking about fundamentality, Sider's account implies distinctive answers to questions about the nature of fundamentality. These answers distinguish his theory of structure from other recent theories of fundamentality, including Kit Fine's theory of ground and reality, the theory of truthmaking, and Jonathan Schaffer's theory of ontological dependence.

In this ambitious and ground-breaking book, Theodore Sider argues that for a representation to be fully successful, truth is not enough; the representation must also use the right concepts-concepts that 'carve at the joints'-so that its conceptual structure matches reality's structure. There is an objectively correct way to 'write the book of the world'. Sider's argument begins from the assertion that metaphysics is about the fundamental structure of reality. Not about what's necessarily true; not about what properties are essential; not about conceptual analysis; and not about what there is. While inquiry into necessity, essence, concepts, or ontology might help to illuminate reality's structure, the ultimate goal is insight into this structure. Sider argues that part of the theory of structure is an account of how structure connects to other concepts. For example, structure can be used to illuminate laws of nature, explanation, reference, induction, physical geometry, substantivity, conventionality, objectivity, and metametaphysics. Write on and wipe off with your own crayons and cloth! This is a writing practice book, complete with crayons and wiper-cloth, with follow-the-dot exercises for different letters and shapes on each page. Colourful characters help your child to create tricky letters, wiggly 's' like a snake, round 'o' like a wheel and 'l' like the handle of an umbrella. A blank board at the end of the book is a perfect space to practise all the letters learnt. It's easy to practise writing letter shapes with this special book. Draw on the pages with your eight colourful crayons, then simply wipe them clean to try again. Have fun! The join-the-dots drawing and writing exercises and colourful characters on each page encourage small fingers to try to learn their letters and eventually to practise writing words.
Writing a Book or Thesis in Microsoft Word: Some Important Tasks and Difficulties

Writing a Book or Thesis in Microsoft Word: Some Important Tasks and Difficulties

The purpose of this book is to help you find in Word a valuable tool instead of an obstacle, to enjoy using it while you become familiar with some powerful aspects of this great editor. The order of the main sections reflects the order an author may like to observe. Assuming you enjoy some familiarity with Word, I skip functions such as how to change the style of a paragraph: the book is not for experts, but also not for absolute beginners; I'm not providing an exhaustive presentation of Word's abilities and disabilities. Everywhere emphasis is given to common mistakes and to ways of letting the program be effective, achieving easily tasks that may otherwise need a lot of time, especially when a document is large and complex.
