Der Betrachter heutiger Gegenwartskunst fragt sich: Ist das noch Kunst in dem Sinne, wie er den Begriff immer verstanden hat, wenn er mit Adorno in der Form und den Verfahrensweisen des Werks dessen Gehalt zu entschlüsseln suchte? Ist das noch notwendiger Ausdruck einer Erfahrung an der eigenen Zeit? Es geht also um die Suche nach einer notwendigen Kunst. Aber was ist das? Zunächst einmal eine, die nicht nach dem Markt schielt, für die der Markt nicht Anstoß zur Produktion ist, sondern eine sekundäre Instanz. Sodann eine Kunst, die für den Produzierenden Notwendigkeit hat, die er machen muß, "pour sortir de l'enfer", wie Antonin Artaud es in seinem van Gogh-Aufsatz formuliert. Anders ausgedrückt: eine authentische Kunst. Zwar ist im Bereich des Ästhetischen, d. h. des Scheins, Authentizität ein problematischer Begriff; dennoch können wir auf ihn nicht verzichten. Je häufiger Ausstellungen von Gegenwartskunst den Betrachter enttäuschen, desto mehr neigt er der Vermutung zu, daß sich die Kunst unserer Zeit, die diesem Begriff und d. h., Hegelsch gesprochen, ihrem Begriff entspricht, nur noch abseits des Betriebs finden läßt, am Rande. Etwa bei einem grösstenteils im provinziellen Kanton Aargau aufgewachsenen Jungen, der mit den Hippies die Ablehnung der kapitalistischen Gesellschaft teilte und sein Lebensgefühl auf meist kleinformatigen Blättern ausgedrückt hat: Adrian Zenklusen.
