Cinema loves Greece and Rome. Hollywood epics, animated movies, avant-garde features - all have turned to classical antiquity for inspiration. On the silver screen, we see a world of virtuous Christians, depraved pagans, gladiators, charioteers, Spartan warriors, and muscle-bound demigods - a potent mix of sex, violence and art. So pervasive are these images that this cinematic output dominates the public understanding of the ancient world. Through analysis of ten influential films, this book examines the representation of Greece and Rome in both popular and art-house cinema, arranged by cinematic genre. Key scenes are discussed and each film is located in its historical context.

This book traces the essence of the Islamist Revolution from its origins in Egypt, through Najaf, Lebanon, Iran and the Iranian Revolution to today. Alastair Crooke presents a compelling account of the ideas and energy which are mobilising the Islamic world. Crooke argues that the West faces a mass mobilisation against the US-led Western project. The roots of this conflict are described in terms of religious themes that extend back over 500 years. They represent clashing systems of thinking and values. Islamists have a vision for the future of their own societies which would entail radical change from Western norms. Resistance is presented as the means to force Western behaviour to change and to expose the essential differences between the two modes of thinking. This is a rigourous account that traces the threads of revolution of various movements, including the influence of 'political Shi'ism' and the Iranian Revolution and its impact on Hezbollah and Hamas.

Abuses and slavery at sea are largely missing from narratives of work and environmental exploitation in the mainstream. This book shines a light on the exploitation of fish and fishers alike in a global industry driven by profits. Conservation and human rights in this industry are huge problems: with vast overprovision of vessels and shortages of fish, labour costs are targeted and young men are trafficked from poor areas onto vessels in virtual slavery. The resultant poverty and debt bonding pushes many towards trafficking drugs and piracy - although the criminality linked to the industry extends far beyond the level of the individual, vessel or fleet. Using first hand testimony and shocking examples of these abuses, the book uncovers these crimes and injustices, with the authors arguing for regulations which if implemented could protect the rights of fishers across the board.

Talking candidly about his entire career; his acting, writing and directing, and the many tussles he has faced with Hollywood moguls, this is Bruce Robinson as you've never seen or heard him before.
A History of Clan Campbell

A History of Clan Campbell

Alastair Campbell

Edinburgh University Press

In the third and final volume of Alastair Campbell's acclaimed account of the Campbells the story resumes at a high pace. Successive incidents include the 9th Earl's part in the 1685 Rebellion and his eventual execution; the 10th Earl's raising to a Dukedom; the Massacre of Glencoe; the 2nd Duke's quashing of the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion at Sheriffmuir; the notable part played by the Clan in the 1745 Rebellion and in its aftermath the sorry tale of the Appin Murder. Following the defeat of the Jacobite armies at Culloden in1746 the old Clan system effectively came to an end. Succeeding chapters describe the break-up of the old order and the diaspora across the world together with details of the chiefly family and an account of the part played by the Clan in the British Army from its founding down to the war in Iraq. It is extraordinary to see how firmly the Campbells have left their imprint, how widely and in what a variety of ways. Appendices cover the heraldic history of Clan Campbell and the titles it has gained. The book is illustrated with maps expertly drawn by Kenneth Campbell and twenty pages of plates, four of them in colour. It includes appendices covering the Clan's heraldic history and the titles it has gained over the centuries, and ends with a full bibliography and comprehensive index. Alistair Campbell's trilogy ranges over the histories of the West Highlands, Scotland, and the Scots overseas, in all of which Clan Campbell played a notable and often decisive part. His writing has combined depth and readability in a well-paced narrative. In recording the history of one remarkable family of people, he has made a significant contribution to the history of Scotland as a whole.

After ten years of wanderlust which took him to nearly seventy countries around the world, Alastair Scott decided it was time to make 'home' his destination. Resolving to explore Scotland and the Scottish people in as much depth and breadth as possible, the author drew up an itinerary which would take him from the outermost isle to the innermost city, sampling the experiences of modern Scotland in all their diversity. Encompassing issues of the land, eccentrics in castles, the state of the Gaidheal, homelessness in Edinburgh, and all the idiosyncrasies of history, development and decline in between, Scott's journey covered four thousand miles of island, mountain and lowland. The variety of place and circumstance was exceeded only by that of the characters encountered en route. The result is a detailed and engrossing portrait of contemporary Scotland, and of one man's rediscovery of his native land.

The Deltic (or Class 55) was one of the most powerful diesel locomotives ever to run on the British Railways network. Capable of a top speed of 100mph, its 'maintenance by replacement' system at Doncaster Works meant it set expectional standards for reliability and availability. From the 1950s until the start of the 1980s, the Deltics saw service between London and Aberdeen on the East Coast Main Line's Deltic fleet - once the most powerful locomotives in Britain. The Deltics had revolutionised rail travel in the late 1950s. Only 22 were ever built but over 10 survive in preservation today and some have even been hired out for main-line service in the past three years. The 'Deltic' captured the imagination of the public and represented the peak of the diesel era. Alastair McLean, a railway enthusiast and author, memorably photographed the last season of running in 1981 in black and white.

Since time immemorial ordinary people have flocked to gaze upon daring feats in the hope of witnessing some death-defying or even death-inducing act. Aeronautics was turned into a public spectacle and exploited financially from its very beginning and thus it has remained ever since. The book sets out to elaborate upon those concepts in the East Midlands, and demonstrates that the region is truly representative of the progress of general aviation in this country as a whole over two centuries. The history covers balloons for shows and sports, the pre-First World War period, women aviators, Sir Alan Cobham, through to private and small air taxi flying operations, Amy Johnson, and continuing up to the present day. Balloons, Bleriots and Barnstormers enables the reader to feel the euphoria and frustrations of the flyers, and experience the same excitement as the people who actually witnessed their efforts.

Danger and excitement; courage and selflessness and gripping stories of life and death in the air: Lady Luck took these heady ingredients and mixed them into the lethal cocktail that is military flying in peace and war. From First World War biplanes to twenty-first-century fast jets, mid-air collisions and many other crashes, hundreds of airmen from all corners of the world left their mark - quite literally - on the landscape and collective memory of the east of England. Featuring a wealth of previously unpublished photographs and with original research and crew correspondence, Dying to Fly ensures these airmen cease simply to be names carved in cold memorial stone or entries in some dusty, long-forgotten documents, and pays tribute to their passing by bringing their courage and human-interest stories into light of day to be remembered with respect.
