Pope Benedict XII (1334-1342)

Pope Benedict XII (1334-1342)

This book offers a unique overview on the career and work on Benedict XII, the third pope of Avignon. Benedict XII (ca. 1334-1342) was a key figure of the Avignon papal court, renowned for rooting out heretics and distinguishing himself as a refined theologian. During his reign, he faced the most significant religious and political challenges in the era of the Avignon papacy: theological quarrels, divisions and schisms within the Church, conflicts between European sovereigns, and the growth of Turkish power in the East. In spite of its diminished political influence, the papacy, which had recently moved to France, emerged as an institution committed to the defense and expansion of the Catholic faith in Europe and the East. Benedict made significant contributions to the definition of doctrine, the assessment of pontifical power in Western Europe, and the expansion of Catholicism in the East: in all these different contexts he distinguished himself as a true guardian of orthodoxy.

Fr. Julian Stead shows the applicability of the Rule of Saint Benedict to the lives of individuals and of society in the 21st century. After a comprehensive introduction and some selected passages of Gregory the Great's Life of Saint Benedict, Dom Julian presents excerpts of the Rule, intertwining his own commentary. For monks and nuns already following the Rule, this book can be a rediscovery of Benedict's message in the context of their own vocations. For laypeople, it sheds light on how to live their daily commitment to the gospel. "Julian Stead brings a wealth of experience, common sense and scholarship to showing how the Rule of St. Benedict can be lived out today." Pastoral Life "Dom Julian has done an admirable job of showing why the Rule of Saint Benedict remains a classic. For those who might hesitate to approach the Rule directly, here is an aid that will draw them directly to the font itself. Even for those who have spent years living under its guidance, there are refreshing insights."Augustin Cardinal Mayer, OSB "Dom Julian Stead offers a profound commentary on Saint Benedict's life and Rule; it is a valuable guide to all who take seriously God's call to a deeper life." Saint Benedict's Rule

The wisdom of St. Benedict, the eponymous founder of the order that would bear his name, comes vividly to life in this new and sparkling, contemporary English translation of and introduction to Benedict's Rule, the seminal guide for life in Christian monastic community. Benedict of Nursia (c. 480-543), born into nobility, renounced his life of privilege to live an eremitic life of extreme asceticism. He became Abbot of the monastic community of Monte Cassino, where he wrote the Rule, acknowledged as his masterpiece. Modestly referring to the work that would chart the course of Western monasticism as "a little rule for beginners," in 73 brief, intensely focused and sympathetically written treatises and prologue, Benedict prescribed for his monastics a religious life in community with other Christians predicated upon mutual support, obedience, hospitality, tolerance and moderation. The Rule concerns practical matters—the types and characteristics of monastics and their vows, the rules and regulations governing authority, administration and ownership, detailed descriptions of the rights and duties given the entire community. Practical themes, however, remain secondary to its primary focus, the beating heart of the Rule, Jesus and His teachings: Jesus in loving obedience to His father, and Jesus in His message of love for and hospitality toward all. It is upon this bedrock that the Benedictine order is and remains anchored. †
The Essential Pope Benedict XVI

The Essential Pope Benedict XVI

On April 24, 2005, Cardinal Joseph Alois Ratzinger became Pope Benedict XVI, the twenty-first-century successor of the Apostle Peter and the spiritual leader of more than one billion Roman Catholics. Who is this complex man whose office grants him sole charge of the world's largest religion? How will his tenure influence the future? The Essential Pope Benedict XVI answers these questions through carefully chosen selections from his homilies, interviews, theological essays, and articles on the crises facing the church today. This collection lays out Benedict's thinking and relates it to a variety of contemporary issues, including modern culture's abandonment of traditional religious values, social mores regarding conception and the sanctity of life, current challenges to the priesthood, and the Catholic Church's tenuous relations with other world religions.First a brilliant peritus, or "expert advisor," to the Second Vatican Council and then archbishop of Munich, Joseph Ratzinger was appointed head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith by Pope John Paul II in 1981. As Cardinal Ratzinger, the ex officio defender of church doctrine, he gained a reputation as a heroic guardian of the faith for conservatives and was held in suspicion by church liberals. We cannot yet know what issues and events will define the reign of Pope Benedict XVI, but by any measure he will be seen as one of the most important theological voices of our time. This one volume is the best source for understanding the heart, soul, and agenda of this twenty-first-century successor to St. Peter.

Many refer to Pope Benedict XVI as "the Mozart of Theology." Who are the thinkers who have informed his theology? What events, and which religious devotions, have shaped his personality? This study attempts to shed light on the unifying melody of the policies and positions of a pontificate charged with spiritual and theological depth.

This volume brings together international scholars working at the intersection of Spinoza studies and critical and feminist philosophy. It is the first book-length study dedicated to the re-reading of Spinoza’s ethical and theologico-political works from a feminist perspective. The twelve outstanding chapters range over the entire field of Spinoza’s writings—metaphysical, political, theological, ethical, and psychological—drawing out the ways in which his philosophy presents a rich resource for the reconceptualization of friendship, sexuality, politics, and ethics in contemporary life. The clear and accessible Introduction offers a historical sketch of Spinoza’s life and intellectual context and indicates how Spinoza’s philosophy might be seen as a rich cultural resource today. Topics treated here include the mind-body problem and its relation to the sex-gender distinction; relational autonomy; the nature of love and friendship; sexuality and normative morality; free will and determinism and their relation to Christian theology; imagination and recognition between the sexes; emotion and the body; and power, imagination, and political sovereignty. The essays engage in a rich and challenging conversation that opens new paths for feminist research.Contributors, besides the editor, are Aurelia Armstrong, Sarah Donovan, Paola Grassi, Luce Irigaray, Susan James, Genevieve Lloyd, Alexandre Matheron, Heidi Ravven, Amelie Rorty, and David West.

The Way of Benedict: Eight Blessings for Lent

The Rule of St Benedict, written for monks in the sixth century, continues to hold an extraordinary appeal to people in our day. It offers a balanced approach to seeking God and integrating prayer, work and relationships in a way that is more essential than ever in our stress-riven society. For St Benedict, the whole of life has a Lenten character, that is, it should be driven by the power of Easter which permeates every aspect of the day with the transforming power of Christ's resurrection. The book aims to help readers engage directly with The Rule of St Benedict. The essential argument is that the Rule offers a way of accessing the transforming power of grace by following the Gospel in everyday life, and so is potentially a blessing for every Christian. While the centrality of Easter in the Rule makes the book ideal as a Lent book, it also means that The Way of Benedict can serve as a guide to the wisdom of the Rule throughout the year. While not a commentary on the Rule, the book follows the shape of the Rule in the belief that this is integral to St Benedict's vision of holistic living.
