Practical Pharmaceutical Laboratory Automation
Laboratory automation is an increasingly important part of the job description of many laboratory scientists. Although many laboratory scientists understand the methods and principles involved in automation, most lack the necessary engineering and programming skills needed to successfully automate or interface equipment in the lab. A step-by-step, how-to reference and guide, Practical Pharmaceutical Laboratory Automation explores the processes needed to automate the majority of tasks required in research today. The author discusses topics ranging from automated mathematical analysis to robotic automation of chemical processes, to combinations of these and other processes. He presents a detailed discussion of high throughput screening and assay development and takes an in-depth look at Visual Basic as the primary programming language used in laboratories. The text has a dedicated web site (http://www.pharmalabauto.com) that contains all the sample code and examples contained within the text as well as other information related to laboratory automation. Providing a starting point for tackling automation problems, Practical Pharmaceutical Laboratory Automation helps you develop a strategy for automation that gets consistent results.

The Secret Message of Jesus

Discover afresh the transforming message of Jesus—an epic story that is good news for everyone, whatever their gender, race, class, politics, or religion.“What if many have carried on a religion that somewhere along the way missed the rich and radical treasures hidden in the essential message of Jesus?”When Brian McLaren began offering an alternative vision of Christian faith and life in books such as A New Kind of Christian and A Generous Orthodoxy, he ignited a firestorm of praise and condemnation that continues to spread across the religious landscape. To some religious conservatives, McLaren is a dangerous rebel without a doctrinally-correct cause. Some fundamentalist websites have even claimed he's in league with the devil and have consigned him to flames. To others though, Brian is a fresh voice, a welcome antidote to the staleness, superficiality, and negativity of the religious status quo. A wide array of people from Evangelical, Catholic, and Mainline Protestant backgrounds claim that through his books they have begun to rediscover the faith they'd lost or rejected. And around the world, many readers say that he has helped them find—for the first time in their lives—a faith that makes sense and rings true. For many, he articulates the promise of what is being called "emerging Christianity."In The Secret Message of Jesus you'll find what's at the center of Brian's critique of conventional Christianity, and what's at the heart of his expanding vision. In the process, you'll meet a Jesus who may be altogether new to you, a Jesus who is…Not the crusading conqueror of religious broadcastingNot the religious mascot of partisan religionNot heaven's ticket-checker, whose words have been commandeered by the church to include and exclude, judge and stigmatize, pacify and domesticate McLaren invites you to discover afresh the transforming message of Jesus—an open invitation to radical change, an enlightening revelation that exposes sham and ignites hope, an epic story that is good news for everyone, whatever their gender, race, class, politics, or religion. "Pastor and best-selling author McLaren revisits the gospel material from a fresh-and at times radical-perspective . . . He does an excellent job of capturing Jesus' quiet, revolutionary style."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Here McLaren shares his own ferocious journey in pondering the teachings and actions of Jesus. It is McLaren's lack of salesmanship or agenda that creates a refreshing picture of the man from Galilee who changed history."—Donald Miller, Author of Blue Like Jazz"In this critical book, Brian challenges us to ask what it would mean to truly live the message of Jesus today, and thus to risk turning everything upside down."—Jim Wallis, Author of God's Politics and editor of Sojourners"Compelling, crucial and liberating: a book for those who seek to experience the blessed heat of Christianity at its source."—Anne Rice, Author of Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt

Why have certain spiritual disciplines been in use for centuries, and why are they so important? It is questionable if one can ever be exactly the same person waking up on two consecutive days. How are spiritual sojourners to cope with the constant change? Many are beginning to explore the ancient Christian spiritual practices, such as fixed-hour prayer, fasting and sincere observance of the Sabbath. What is causing this hunger for deeper spirituality?Brian McLaren guides us on this quest for an explanation of these spiritual practices, many of which go all the way back to Abraham and the establishment of Israel. In the midst of contemporary Christianity, we discover the beauty of these disciplines and the transformation through Christ that each can provide.Includes foreword by Phyllis Tickle and leads into seven additional titles, The Ancient Practices, a classic series featuring some of the leading writers on spirituality in the world today.

The global legal order today exists in a state of turmoil. It has proven incapable of effectively addressing the social problems ailing humanity and securing justice for everyone. This disruption afflicts both national legal systems and the international legal order as a whole. According to the Bah ' teachings, the legal order of the world can only be rescued if it is transformed to reflect divinely-revealed principles, particularly those teachings of global unity and oneness brought by the Revelation of Bah 'u'll h (1817-1892), the Prophet and Founder of the Bah ' Faith. This book investigates how that transformation can be brought about in various domains of law by reviewing the key features and history of the current global legal order and the many existing deficiencies of that order, weighing current debates on how to address them, and determining the potential for implementing reforms based on Bah ' principles.

Modern society has reached a critical juncture in its existence. Like past civilizations ours has reached a point where its future is far from certain, with its decline, or even collapse, being distinct possibilities. The Incas, the Mayans, the Romans, the Rapanui, and many others, had seemingly successful societies, yet collapsed when faced with challenges that threatened their continued existence. Are we to suffer the same fate? What could possibly cause our downfall?Climate change and environmental issues? Perhaps. It is now almost a certainty that these events are destined to inflict catastrophic damage to our global society. Our coastal cities and island nations, as well as our global economy and agricultural output, will be irreparably damaged. Many of Earth's species, as well as the lives of many millions of people, will be displaced or lost forever.Such a fate may still be averted, but that opportunity has largely passed. Even if we are able to correct the climatic and environmental issues threatening our society, we must still recognize and address the ultimate source of our problems. For if we fail, a far worse fate potentially awaits us.Our Global Crisis is an eye opening look at the common weakness shared by societies and civilizations both past and present. But analysis of the problem alone will not solve the global crisis we now face. Thus, the final chapter is dedicated to the simple, yet critical solutions, necessary for our very survival.

Unconscious Bias

Unconscious Bias

Common Good Coalition

When I began researching the subject of bias, I was simply trying to make sense of some disturbing things I saw happening around me in the political and religious worlds. I had no idea that my research would turn into an extended essay in the form of a short e-book "Why Don't They Get It? Overcoming Bias in Others - and Yourself". Nor did I expect that that extended essay would inspire a podcast, "Learning How to See", co-hosted with my dear friends and colleagues Fr. Richard Rohr & Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis. And never in my wildest dreams could I have guessed that Tim Gilman, Creative Director for the Common Good Coalition would invite me to team up with our mutual friend Rev. Dr. Samual Lee, who, in addition to his extraordinary leadership in a congregation and university, is also an artist with a deep love of photography. The idea for this book is simple: As you reflect on each of the thirteen biases we'll cover, you'll find a photograph to savor. Let its composition and colors still you and then move you, and then start writing. You might write a prayer or a poem. You might tell a story. You might jot down some spontaneous reactions, or even a list of questions for further consideration. One of my mentors says, "Learning is not the consequence of teaching." (Or, I might add, writing and reading or listening to a podcast.) "Learning is the consequence of thinking," he says. So, we offer you this book to assist you in thinking . . . thinking as you slow down and sit in quiet reflection . . . thinking as you write . . . thinking as you reflect on what you write. In many ways, biases are shortcuts around thinking. They are ways our brains try to say, "You're busy enough already. No need to think about this." Shortcuts are sometimes helpful, but sometimes, they lead to dangerous dead ends. Thanks for your interest. Thanks for thinking, and learning One of my mentors says, "Learning is not the consequence of teaching." (Or, I might add, writing and reading or listening to a podcast.) "Learning is the consequence of thinking," he says. So, we offer you this book to assist you in thinking . . . thinking as you slow down and sit in quiet reflection . . . thinking as you write . . . thinking as you reflect on what you write.
New Drugs, Fair Prices

New Drugs, Fair Prices

TAYLOR FRANCIS LTD

New Drugs, Fair Prices addresses the important question of how we might get the innovative new medicines we need at prices we can afford. Today, this debate is impassioned but sterile. One side calls for price controls, discounting their impact on investment in innovation. The other points to miraculous new therapies, disregarding their affordability and social inequity. This polarized argument creates more heat than light, threatening the social contract between the industry and society on which pharmaceutical innovation depends. This ground-breaking book takes a wholly new perspective on the issue and raises the debate to a more informed and productive level. Drawing on interviews with more than 70 experts across the pharmaceutical innovation world and combining a diverse literature from scientific, political, economic and business domains, it describes how a sustainable and affordable supply of new medicines is possible only by balancing pharmaceutical innovation’s complex, adaptive ecosystem. By considering how each of the ecosystem’s seven habitats work and interact with the others, it makes a comprehensive set of recommendations for achieving that ecosystem balance. The core message of New Drugs, Fair Prices is important to anyone who ever has needed or will ever need a medicine: we can have a sustainable supply of new medicines that are both innovative and affordable if we manage the pharmaceutical innovation ecosystem intelligently.
