Judging Thomas: The Life and Times of Clarence Thomas
Clarence Thomas, the youngest and most controversial member of the Supreme Court, could become the longest-serving justice in history, influencing American law for decades to come. Who is this enigmatic man? And what does he believe in?Judging Thomas tells the remarkable story of Clarence Thomas's improbable journey from hardscrabble beginnings in the segregated South to the loftiest court in the land. With objectivity and balance, author Ken Foskett chronicles Thomas's contempt for upper-crust blacks who snubbed his uneducated, working-class roots; his flirtation with the priesthood and, later, Black Power; the resentment that fueled his opposition to affirmative action; the conservative beliefs that ultimately led him to the Supreme Court steps; and the inner resilience that propelled him through the doors.Based on interviews with Thomas himself, fellow justices, family members, and hundreds of friends and associates, Judging Thomas skillfully unravels perhaps the most complex, controversial, and powerful public figure in America today.
Postcolonial Settings in the Fiction of James Clarence Mangan, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and Bram Stoker
This book explores how three Anglo-Irish writers, J.C. Mangan, J.S. Le Fanu and Bram Stoker, use settings in their short fictions to recreate, depict and confront Ireland’s colonial situation in the nineteenth century. This study provides an innovative approach by targeting a genre (the short story) which has not been explored in its entirety— certainly not within nineteenth century Ireland - much less using a postcolonial approach to the short story. Added to this is the fact that it analyses how these writers used settings as an anticolonial tool. To do so, the book is divided into two major sections, an analysis of Irish settings and non-Irish ones. It works on the premise that all three writers used the idea of displacement to target colonialism and its effects on Irish society. In short, this book addresses a gap in scholarship, as the Irish Gothic short story as a decolonizing tool has not been sufficiently and globally studied.

The three main characters in Dungeon Play or the life and times of George of Clarence after his Untimely End are George, Duke of Clarence; Richard, Duke of Gloucester; and their brother, Edward IV. The entire action of the play takes place in a dungeon beneath the Tower of London between the years 1478 to 1485.A fourth character; George, Duke of Bedlam (a madman) is the dungeon's sole occupant. And there is also a somewhat smaller role for a female. Lady Jane Shore, who was the mistress to both Edward and his political cronies. The story of the play opens when George is thrown into this cell by Edward on charges of treason. History suggests that George was sealed in a tun of Malsby wine for his offenses and that the task of executing that sentence fell to the then constable of England, Richard of Gloucester. William Shakespeare made much of Richard's callous mistreatment of his brother, but in truth, Richard more probably pleaded with Edward to spare George's life. In my world, Richard does not see to George's execution but rather deceives Edward (and history) by sealing George in the prison keep instead. The slow reveal of the play is that George of Bedlam and George of Clarence are not cellmates but rather one and the same person and that the entire play is the remembrances of a poor George gone mad. In this world, time is malleable and months and years can skip by in a heartbeat (or in this case, 3 acts). The play ends with mad George left quite alone and forgotten with only the ghosts of his brothers (Richard and Edward) for companionship.
