Practical Strategies to Assess Value in Health Care

Practical Strategies to Assess Value in Health Care

Craig A. Solid

Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2022
sidottu
These days, the idea of “value” is at the center of many activities and decisions in health care in the United States. While there exist books that detail the technical steps for how to carry out a specific type of value assessment, such as cost-effectiveness or return on investment, there are few that attempt to teach healthcare professionals how to think about value. This book provides a deeper understanding of value as a concept as well as an endeavor (as in, to determine or uncover the value of care) within the healthcare industry by illustrating the different components of value that should guide decision-making processes for policy, infrastructure, and quality improvement. Through an exploration of theories of economics and implementation science, as well as practical suggestions for real-world applications, this text provides a foundation for the long and complicated “value” journey the US has bet its entire healthcare system on. In the US, policy to promote what is referred to as “value-based care” is here to stay. As we move forward within this construct, we need to move beyond the over-simplified definition of value as “quality per dollar spent” to a more functional framework for how to think about value that can adapt to different circumstances and points of view. Only then will it be possible to compare value across settings, conditions, and activities. The book consists of 9 chapters organized in four sections:Part I: Understanding the Challenges of Assessing the Value of Health Care Part II: A Primer on Fundamental Concepts and Current Techniques Used to Measure Value in Health Care Part III: A Discussion of the Real-world Motivations and Requirements that Should be Contemplated when Exploring ValuePart IV: How to Design and Perform a Value Assessment Practical Strategies to Assess Value in HealthCare is an essential resource for healthcare professionals at all levels and points of care who are interested in understanding how best to assess and interpret value for a particular situation including providers, administrators, payers, insurers, health plans, and policy-makers.

Toba Caldera: The Eye of Sumatra

Toba Caldera: The Eye of Sumatra

Craig A. Chesner

Toba, the name of a simple farmer from an ancient legend in a remote land, was given to a lake, a people, a volcanic crater, and recently a Geopark. The name has many meanings, but to scientists such as volcanologists, geologists, and naturalists, Toba is synonymous with the greatest volcanic cataclysm in human history. This monograph highlights the geologic events leading up to and following the super-eruption that occurred just 74,000 years ago and created Danau (Lake) Toba, the hidden gem of northern Sumatra. Volcanologist Dr. Craig Chesner uses his vast knowledge of Toba to take you on an illustration-packed journey to this geological wonder. Designed for the curious visitor to the Toba Caldera Geopark and the student of volcanology alike, this overview provides a concise account of the dynamic processes that have made Toba the focus of scientific research for over 125 years. The connections between the forces of nature to the stunning landscape and its peoples are continually on display as this narrative addresses almost every aspect of Toba’s geologic origin and evolution, while encouraging global citizens to appreciate its unique status in Earth’s history and explore its many secrets.

Agora Excavations, 1931-2006

Craig A. Mauzy

American School of Classical Studies at Athens
2006
nidottu
In 2006, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens celebrated 75 years of archaeological work in the Athenian Agora, the civic centre of classical Athens. Since the first trench was dug on May 25, 1931, excavations have continued in a series of yearly campaigns, only briefly interrupted by World War II. The impact these discoveries have made on our understanding of Athenian history and topography is well documented, but relatively little has been published about the fascinating history of the excavations themselves. This book fills that gap, presenting a pictorial history of the project illustrated with many archival photographs and primary documents. Rather than presenting a continuous narrative, the author focuses on some key moments in the Agora's history including the reconstruction of the Stoa of Attalos, the restoration of the Church of the Holy Apostles, and the landscaping of the archaeological park.
Preaching and Stewardship

Preaching and Stewardship

Craig A. Satterlee

Alban Institute, Inc
2011
nidottu
Both new and veteran preachers alike find the annual stewardship sermon a challenge and are eager for encouraging, practical advice. In Preaching and Stewardship, Craig Satterlee offers a nuts-and-bolts handbook on preaching stewardship, raising issues preachers need to consider when preparing stewardship sermons and offering advice on how to address them. Satterlee argues that stewardship preaching must include a bold and concrete proclamation of God's love, will, and justice, as well as an invitation to grow as stewards in response to this proclamation. He focuses each chapter on a question preachers ought to ask themselves as they prepare the stewardship sermon, beginning with, 'What do you mean by stewardship' and 'Why should we give to the church' In chapters 3 through 6, he explores what the Bible says about stewardship. In chapter 7, he names some of the assumptions both preachers and worshipers bring to the stewardship sermon. The final chapter a variety of ways congregations can support the stewardship sermon. Satterlee illustrates the premise of each chapter with anecdotes from congregational life. Preachers who desire examples of stewardship sermons will especially appreciate stewardship sermons he shares from various preachers to illustrate points in the main text.
Advancing IT Interoperability and Trade Facilitation in Southeast Asia
This book explores how digital technologies are transforming cross-border trade in Southeast Asia. It examines IT interoperability within the ASEAN Single Window, a landmark initiative that connects national customs systems to accelerate clearance, strengthen cybersecurity, and enable seamless data exchange. Organized across nine chapters, the book highlights how artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, and smart connected platforms are reshaping trade flows and regulatory cooperation. Drawing on detailed case studies from Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, it shows how digital innovation reduces transaction costs, shortens clearance times, and empowers small and medium-sized enterprises to participate in regional commerce. Combining theory, policy analysis, and empirical evidence, this book provides both researchers and practitioners with a clear roadmap for advancing digital trade. It is an essential resource for scholars of international trade, policymakers, and business leaders seeking to understand and shape the future of digital transformation in Asia and beyond.

Divorce Lawyers at Work

Divorce Lawyers at Work

Lynn Mather; Craig A. McEwen; Richard J. Maiman

Oxford University Press Inc

The authors look at how divorce lawyers actually work to address the question of legal professionalism in practice. Through a detailed and systematic study of legal practice at the micro level, they show how lawyers create their own controls over work through their social relationships, formal and informal norms, common knowledge, and shared values. While much of the research on legal professionalism centers on the formal standards of the bar as reflected in codes of professional responsibility, Mather et al. show how the discretionary judgments that lawyers make, and the choices they face, are actually understood in relation to norms and standards of other lawyers with whom they interact or compare themselves.

Written for the general visitor, the Athenian Agora Museum Guide is a companion to the 2010 edition of the Athenian Agora Site Guide and leads the reader through all of the display spaces within the Stoa of Attalos in the Athenian Agora - the terrace, the ground-floor colonnade, and the newly opened upper story. The guide also discusses each case in the museum gallery chronologically, beginning with the prehistoric and continuing with the Geometric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Hundreds of artifacts, ranging from common pottery to elite jewellery held in 81 cases, are described and illustrated in colour for the very first time. Through focus boxes, readers can learn about marble-working, early burial practices, pottery production, ostracism, home life, and the wells that dotted the ancient site. A timeline, maps, and plans accompany the text. For those who wish to learn more about what they see in the museum, a list of further reading follows each entry.
Climate Change and Human Behavior

Climate Change and Human Behavior

Much of the current rhetoric surrounding climate change focuses on the physical changes to the environment and the resulting material damage to infrastructure and resources. Although there has been some dialogue about secondary effects (namely mass migration), little effort has been given to understanding how rapid climate change is affecting people on group and individual levels. In this Element, we examine the psychological impacts of climate change, especially focused on how it will lead to increases in aggressive behaviors and violent conflict, and how it will influence other aspects of human behavior. We also look at previously established psychological effects and use them to help explain changes in human behavior resulting from rapid climate change, as well as to propose actions that can be taken to reduce climate change itself and mitigate harmful effects on humans.
