Discover the extraordinary true-story by Diane and Bernie Lierow, in Dani's Story Dani was so severely neglected by her birth mother that she grew up knowing only squalor. She never went to school or the doctor, and rarely glimpsed sunlight. Desperately malnourished, she couldn't talk and had never been toilet-trained. The social worker who took her into care had never heard of a case so horrific. The doctors believed Dani would never recover from such a terrible start in life. Then she met the Lierows - a unique, blended family who were seeking to adopt a child. Despite being warned that she was way beyond hope of a normal life, they were instantly drawn to her and sensed a bright light behind her pale complexion. When they finally adopted her, they showered Dani with so much affection and encouragement that she came to life for the first time. Proving all the experts wrong, Dani would go on to open up and express herself in a way that no-one could have expected. Dani's Story is the remarkable and heartwarming memoir by Diane and Bernie Lierow, a testament to the power of kindness to overcome even what seem the most insurmountable challenges.Diane and Bernie Lierow are Dani's adopted parents, and as well as bringing up six children of their own they continue to act as foster parents. Their story about the astonishing Dani won a Pulitzer Prize for the St. Petersburg Times and was featured on Oprah. They live on a farm in Tennessee. Danny Elfman's Batman

Danny Elfman is recognized as one of the most successful, interesting, and innovative figures in recent film music composition. He came to the fore in the late 1980s in connection with his collaboration with Tim Burton on his films including Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985), Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), The Nightmare before Christmas (1993), and Sleepy Hollow (1999). In addition to this, Elfman has composed music for more than 40 other films, including Somersby (1993), Dolores Claibourne (1995), Good Will Hunting (1997), Men in Black (1997), and Spiderman (2002). Beetlejuice was the first mainstream commercial success of the collaboration, but Batman was the film which marked Tim Burton's arrival as a major figure in Hollywood film direction, and equally established Danny Elfman as a film score composer, particularly in relation to action and fantasy genres. The score for Batman won a Grammy in 1989 and is an outstanding example of his collaboration with Burton as well as admirably demonstrating his particular talents and distinctive compositional voice. In particular, it displays the characteristic "darkness" of his orchestration in this genre and the means he uses to create a full length film score from what is often a relatively small amount of musical material, in this case the famous Batman theme. This book examines Elfman's scoring technique and provides a detailed analysis and commentary on the Batman score. The film is discussed in the context of its comic-book origins and the fantasy-action genre, setting it and its score against the late 1970s and early 1980s equivalents such as Star Wars and Superman, and revealing how Burton and Elfman between them changed the cinematic idea of what a superhero is. The book also explores Elfman's musical background, his place within the film music industry and the controversy that sprang up following the release of B

Reaffirming the wonder and glory of individual rights, Robert Traver's Hungry Hollow tales recount the mischievous escapades of Danny and his "boys." Setting themselves up in a logging shack near the iron-mining town of Chippewa in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Danny and his cronies spend their time fishing and hunting, story-telling, moonshining, and rampaging through the Chippewa saloons and the local "hotel."Traver has caught the genuine flavor of backwoods life. Beyond the diverse schemes and pranks, he masterfully portrays a group of men who live as they do because they choose to. Although written as fiction, Danny and the Boys is true Americana.

Society disables us more than autism ever could ‘My brain’s still fizzing, my heart’s still sore and I’m already re-reading’ Sally Phillips Virginia’s son Danny has a way of lighting up a room. He’s warm, personable and has an infectious laugh. He forms lasting relationships and has known his best friend since they were little. He is also nonverbal and autistic, and requires round-the-clock care and a liquid diet. And for this reason, there are many who would rather not encounter Danny. Challenging the view that autism is something that needs to be ‘cured’, Virginia Bovell testifies to the extraordinary care Danny has received for over 30 years and the everyday kindness and decency of the people – ‘the band of angels’ – that surround him. She asks us to consider what makes a thriving individual versus an inadequate one; what it means to be ill versus what it means to not to conform; what roles society values and rewards; and how humans might flourish outside of failing political and economic systems. 'An inspiring testament and a celebration of neurodiversity.' Manni Coe, author of Brother. Do. You. Love. Me

Colour printed - 130 illustrations Tales of meetings with Dandi Swami Narayananand Saraswati, the Guru's Will, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi & the Shankaracharyas of Jyotir Math. 'Dandi Swami' is a book celebrating the life of Dandi Swami Narayananand Saraswati and explores the lives of others from his lineage of thinkers. Dandi Swami Narayananand Saraswati was a contempory of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the man who popularised Transcendental Meditation. Both used to listen to the teachings of the same guru, Shankaracharya Swami Brahmanand Saraswati. When the guru died he left a Will empowering one of his disciples to take his place as Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math, in the Himalayas. Not everyone was happy with the Will, and there have been disputes over succession ever since. It appears that Dandi Swami was offered the post of Shankaracharya but declined, preferring a life of seclusion. 'Dandi Swami' presents many quotations from Dandi Swami's teacher, Swami Shantanand, providing food for thought, and spiritual solace. 'Dandi Swami' includes selected quotations from Swami Brahmanand, a guru who had the ear of the first President of India. 'Dandi Swami' explores spiritual questions through the eyes of those that meet with Dandi Swami. Accounts of visitors such as Rob H van Dijk and Paul Mason offer glimpses into the life and beliefs of this humble hermit. An interview with David Sieveking offers futher insights into the retiring personality of Dandi Swami.
Danny Mo a Novel

Danny Mo a Novel

John Haines

"Maybe the best novel about golf ever written."-- Gary D'Amato, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel "There are legendary tales that transcend sport, and John Haines' Danny Mo does just this with humor, heartbreak, triumph, and truth. With a tip of the visor to Dan Jenkins, it's a dead solid perfect debut." -- Gary Van Sickle, Sports Illustrated senior writer The characters in Danny Mo are entertaining, vulnerable, faulted and frequently hilarious. And though the story may revolve around a game, life 's bigger questions are not excluded. Danny Mo would make a hell of a movie John Ehle, GolfWisconsin.comDANNY MORAN found it fun and freeing to rank himself "top-five worldwide" at life's more mundane tasks (sorting socks, opening stubborn jar lids, etc.) while embracing the joys and challenges of family life, running a business, and preserving his legendary status in competitive amateur golf. But when long-made plans are destroyed and longer-held routines are rendered meaningless, it marks the beginning of a brand new life for Danny Mo.After three years away from golf to deal with a world he never could have anticipated, Danny returns to competition and to his hometown for one more, mostly ceremonial, appearance in the State Open. The championship is to be held at a controversial new course, The Majesty in Rock Harbor, situated along the bayside bluffs and dramatic shoreline property of Wisconsin's famed Door County. Possessing a significant advantage with his knowledge of the land, Danny acts on a long-harbored temptation and attempts something in the final round of the Open that no one - not Tiger, not Phil, nor Jack nor Arnie in their prime - could even think of pulling off. What transpires stuns the harbor community and puts Danny at the center of a national story in Sport's Illustrated that, even as it informs and enlightens, creates far more questions than it answers. Family, health, work and a passion for sports and competition are precariously balanced against elements of faith, regret, mortality and infinite possibility in a familiar world that becomes harder to recognize as the challenges mount. Yet hope remains and redemption beckons for a family galvanized by love and loathing and come what may.
