The Freedom of Lights: Edmond Jabès and Jewish Philosophy of Modernity
Edmond Jabès was one of the most intriguing Jewish thinkers of the 20th century – a poet for the public and a Kabbalist for those who read his work more closely. This book turns his writings into a ground-breaking philosophical achievement: thinking which is manifestly indebted to the Kabbalah, but in the post-religious and post-Shoah world. Loss, exile, negativity, God’s absence, writing and Jewishness are the main signposts of the negative ontology which this book offers as an interpretation of Jabès’ work. On the basis of it, the book examines the nature of the miraculous encounter between Judaism and philosophy which occurred in the 20th century. Modern Jewish philosophy is a re-constructed tradition which adapts the intellectual and spiritual legacy of Judaism to answer purely modern questions.
Logique de Classe: Edmond Goblot, La Bourgeoisie Et La Distinction Sociale
English summary: Edmond Goblot was a French philosopher and logician known especially for his 1925 essay, La Barriere et le niveau, in which he argued for a cultural perspective and definition of the bourgeoisie. The present volume examines Goblot's philosophical works as both social and intellectual choices within the context of the French Third Republic.

The dynamic duo succumbs to the wintry wonderland charms of snow-clad Quebec City, where making memories is easy on a leisurely cal che ride and thrilling toboggan run on the banks of the ice-clogged St. Lawrence River. They eat poutine and maple sugar treats, frolic on the Plains of Abraham and look ahead to Carnival festivities. Angus is in his element in the French-speaking province of Quebec and Edmond finds his voice in a most unusual way. The brothers even contemplate a career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
The True Story of Vanilla: How Edmond Albius Made History
★ "Moving and bittersweet...Discusses the reality of slavery and the racial violence and prejudice formerly enslaved individuals experienced." -- Booklist, starred review In 1841, a 12-year-old enslaved boy, Edmond Albius, made history when he discovered how to hand-pollinate vanilla plants using a bamboo twig. Until that time, only bees in Mexico could pollinate the plant--botanists couldn't figure out another way. With his master, Edmond travelled around R union Island to share his technique, le geste d'Edmonde (Edmond's gesture), which is still in use today. Despite his important achievement, as an enslaved person Edmond didn't receive payment or recognition for his contribution to science, eventually dying in poverty after being freed from slavery in 1848. Today it is recognized that Edmond's method of pollination was key to bringing vanilla to the world, helped to create a billion-dollar industry and gave us the flavor we love to use in cooking, baking, medicine and, of course, ice cream. The epub edition of this title is fully accessible.
