Haggai, Zechariah 1-8

Haggai, Zechariah 1-8

Carol L. Meyers; Eric M. Meyers

Yale University Press
2007
pokkari
Haggai and Zechariah 1–8, Volume 25B in the acclaimed Anchor Bible part of the Scripture known as the Minor Prophets, were written during a critical period in Israel’s history, the momentous return of the Jews from Babylonian exile. Following the conquest of Babylon by the Persian Empire, the Israelites sought to reestablish their ethnic and religious legacy in Judah. This was a time of profound turmoil and uncertainty, and Haggai and Zechariah provided a crucial measure of support and inspiration. They rallied Israel’s energies and exhorted their fellow countrymen to heed the word of God. Under their guidance the Jews restored the Temple at Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by the armies of Nebuchadnezzar. Together the two prophets guided Israel through an important transitional epoch, and reconciled the influences of Persia’s dominion with the sacred traditions of the Hebrew people. In this illuminating new translation and commentary, Carol and Eric Meyers consider the Book of Haggai and the first eight chapters of the Book of Zechariah in a linguistic, social, and historical context. They underscore the literary artistry, the political acumen, and the prophetic authority of these fascinating volumes that proved so vital to the survival of Israel and the preservation of the Jewish faith.
Zechariah 9-14

Zechariah 9-14

This commentary and new translation of Zechariah 9-14 continues the appraoch adopted in the authors' 1987 Anchor Bible volume (25B) on Haggai and Zechariah 1-8. Authors Carol and Eric Meyers are perhaps uniquely qualified for this work because of their backgrounds in biblical archaeology and the social sciences. Employing the highest standards of pilological, literary, and historical research, they shed light on many enigmatic passages and offer an entirely new perspective on the history of Israel and its religion in the Persian period.Whereas many scholars have viewed this point in the history of Israel as a time of deterioration of the beliefs and practices of biblical religion, the Meyerses paint a picture of an innovative and vibrant community struggling to maintain its identity within a rapidly changing world dominated by the mighty Greeks and Persians. In the face of this the author of Zechariah 9-14 makes extensive and transformative use of earlier biblical writings and of the sayings of previous prophets, and articulates a radically new view of Israel's future. The Meyerses are the first modern commentators to see in these ancient texts the central role played by the Greco-Persian Wars in shaping the postexilic Restoration Community of Israel and its views of an expansive and glorious future. And althought Zechariah 9-14 is often regarded as the swan song of biblical prophecy, the Meyerses clearly demonstrate that the new modes of prophetic discourse found within this text helped biblical religion to meet one of the greatest challenges in its long history.

Cycles, Transfers, and Motivic Homology Theories

Cycles, Transfers, and Motivic Homology Theories

Vladimir Voevodsky; Andrei Suslin; Eric M. Friedlander

Princeton University Press
2000
pokkari
The original goal that ultimately led to this volume was the construction of "motivic cohomology theory," whose existence was conjectured by A. Beilinson and S. Lichtenbaum. This is achieved in the book's fourth paper, using results of the other papers whose additional role is to contribute to our understanding of various properties of algebraic cycles. The material presented provides the foundations for the recent proof of the celebrated "Milnor Conjecture" by Vladimir Voevodsky. The theory of sheaves of relative cycles is developed in the first paper of this volume. The theory of presheaves with transfers and more specifically homotopy invariant presheaves with transfers is the main theme of the second paper. The Friedlander-Lawson moving lemma for families of algebraic cycles appears in the third paper in which a bivariant theory called bivariant cycle cohomology is constructed. The fifth and last paper in the volume gives a proof of the fact that bivariant cycle cohomology groups are canonically isomorphic (in appropriate cases) to Bloch's higher Chow groups, thereby providing a link between the authors' theory and Bloch's original approach to motivic (co-)homology.

The fourth edition of Mechanics of Materials is an in-depth yet accessible introduction to the behavior of solid materials under various stresses and strains. Emphasizing the three key concepts of deformable-body mechanics--equilibrium, material behavior, and geometry of deformation--this popular textbook covers the fundamental concepts of the subject while helping students strengthen their problem-solving skills. Throughout the text, students are taught to apply an effective four-step methodology to solve numerous example problems and understand the underlying principles of each application. Focusing primarily on the behavior of solids under static-loading conditions, the text thoroughly prepares students for subsequent courses in solids and structures involving more complex engineering analyses and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE). The text provides ample, fully solved practice problems, real-world engineering examples, the equations that correspond to each concept, chapter summaries, procedure lists, illustrations, flow charts, diagrams, and more. This updated edition includes new Python computer code examples, problems, and homework assignments that require only basic programming knowledge.

The Cold War that dominated world political, economic and military activities for almost half of the 20th century was, in many respects, ""fought"" at sea between the United States and the Soviet Union. The U.S. Navy played a central role from the outset, projecting America's presence and power to the far corners of the globe while attempting to stop Soviet aggressions and to advance its own agenda. This useful reference provides a detailed chronological outline of Cold War developments and events as they relate to U.S. and Soviet naval forces and their allies. Chronology covers naval forward-presence and combat operations from the Berlin crisis, Korea, the Suez campaign, and the Vietnam War to the Iran-Iraq conflict, the Falkands War, and the Gulf War. Smaller-scale confrontations are also included. Events of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Stalin's massive naval expansion, the largest peace-time U.S. naval buildup in history during the 1980s, and other crucial events are presented. The authors present a wealth of information on naval technological and personnel developments, such as the unveiling of new ship types, advances in missile technology, the introduction of new aircraft, and changes in naval leadership. By showcasing new information made available through the opening of Russian archives, this book serves as a walk through history as well as an indispensable reference for naval history buffs and serious students of the Cold War.

Short stories in the Middle Ages known as exempla (moralized tales) have entertained and instructed Spaniards and others from the Middle Ages until today. The "Libro de los enxienplos por a.b.c. (Book of Tales by A.B.C.)," the richest collection of prose tales, numbering more than 500, was the creation of the fifteenth-century Archdeacon, Clemente Sanches. Some stories he translated almost literally, others he retold in his own words as he read ancient and medieval documents, some of which are lost in their original form, and some he recast from the oral literature of the folk - all in excellent style. Many of his stories are among the best tales ever told in world literature."
