Eugene Victor Debs led the Socialist Party in the early twentieth-century to federal and state office across the country, helped to pioneer a fighting union politics that organized all workers, and became the beloved figurehead of American radicalism. Imprisoned for speaking out against World War I, Debs ran for president from prison, receiving over one million votes. Debs's story is the story of labor battles in industrializing America, of a socialist politics grown directly out of the American Midwest heartland, and of a distinctly American vision of socialism. With the campaign of Bernie Sanders, the rise of mass movements like Occupy and Black Lives Matter, and the Wall Street Crash of 2008, socialism has once again made itself felt in American politics. This graphic biography, published in collaboration with the Democratic Socialists of America-whose growing membership, spurred by Trump's election and Bernie Sanders' campaign, has reached heights not seen among socialist parties since the 1920s-is geared toward a new generation exploring socialist and working-class radicalism in the past and the present.Noah Van Sciver's dynamic illustrations are paired with short, accessible framing essays by Paul Buhle, noted historian of the U.S. left, with Dave Nance and Steve Max.

When the world-weary dandy Eugene Onegin moves from St Petersburg to take up residence in the country estate he has inherited, he strikes up an unlikely friendship with his neighbour, the poet Vladimir Lensky. Coldly rejecting the amorous advances of Tatyana and cynically courting her sister Olga – Lensky’s fiancée – Onegin finds himself dragged into a tragedy of his own making.Eugene Onegin – presented here in a sparkling translation by Roger Clarke, along with extensive notes and commentary – was the founding text of modern Russian literature, marking a clean break from the high-flown classical style of its predecessors and introducing the quintessentially Russian hero and heroine, which would remain the archetypes for novelists throughout the nineteenth century.

The Collected Works of Eugene Halliday

The Collected Works of Eugene Halliday

How can we deal with the rapidly increasing pace and complexity of life, fear of terrorism and the threatening state of world affairs, climate breakdown, the confusions of personal relationships-without succumbing to stress, depression and illness? Halliday provides a way to assimilate the shocks of life experiences, so that we might live a more balanced life. The way to achieve this is through reconnecting with the centre of our own being, our consciousness. Halliday sets out not only the nature of this consciousness, but also its relation to the world of phenomena, to the nature of being, and in particular, to mankind. He begins by examining the meaning of terms such as sentience, consciousness and awareness. They are to some degree interchangeable and refer to, `That in and by which we know what we know, and that we know.' If we ask ourselves what this statement means, we can only say that, `We know what we mean. Consciousness is its own evidence', and thus we cannot indicate what we mean by one of these consciousness-related words, `without appealing to that in us, which corresponds with their significance, that is, to that in us which knows that it knows'. Halliday sees a complex structure such as the brain, as `a vehicle for the expression of the complex processes of an [already existing] sentience'. He posits that the ultimate source and origin of our being resides in an absolute field of sentience, and states that the true nature of the self is `consciousness itself'. But, as beings with physical bodies, we are tyrannised by the limitations of our sense organs; by the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain, by emotional charges in the records of our experiences, so that we often behave in a reactive manner-as if we were no more than animals with no free choice. But, if we remember the nature of our true self, and our source in consciousness, we can free ourselves from this enslavement and become human, that is, capable of free choice and action.
Eugene Savage: the Seminole Paintings

Eugene Savage: the Seminole Paintings

Eugene Savage: The Seminole Paintings is a colourful introduction to an American artist best known today as a muralist with the Works Progress Administration. Eugene Savage (1883-1978) first visited the Florida Everglades in the 1930's, became enchanted with the local Seminole Indian tribe and spent the next 20 years depicting them. Savages's paintings, drawings, and watercolours not only document the Seminoles, they are also important works of art in their own right. Each presents Seminole traditions, threatened by encroachment on the Everglades, in an artistic manner reminiscent of Surrealist dreamscapes and Art Deco sensibilities. Although Savage's series is perhaps the most extensive painted record of the Florida Seminoles, art historians have largely overlooked these works in favour of studies of the natives of the American Plains or Southwest. This new volume provides an opportunity to re-assess the artist's career, and offers new insights into the representation of the Seminoles in American art.

Eugene Onegin, Op. 24, is an opera ("lyrical scenes") in 3 acts (7 scenes), composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The libretto, organised by the composer and Konstantin Shilovsky, very closely follows certain passages in Alexander Pushkin's novel in verse, retaining much of his poetry. Shilovsky contributed M. Triquet's verses in Act 2, Scene 1, while Tchaikovsky wrote the words for Lensky's arioso in Act 1, Scene 1, and almost all of Prince Gremin's aria in Act 3, Scene 1. 1] Eugene Onegin is a well-known example of lyric opera, to which Tchaikovsky added music of a dramatic nature. The story concerns a selfish hero who lives to regret his blas rejection of a young woman's love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend. The opera was first performed in Moscow in 1879. There are several recordings of it, and it is regularly performed. The work's title refers to the protagonist.

This publication features the work of French artist Eugène Louis Charvot (1847-1924), a distinguished painter and printmaker. Recognized in his time, Charvot's work was lost to history and has been rediscovered in Jacksonville Florida. A fascinating individual, Charvot practiced medicine for many years but stated that his first love was art. Thus, despite the rigors of a prestigious medical career, Charvot devoted himself to the pursuit of his muse throughout his life. Inspired by the serene countryside of his youth, Charvot became a landscapist, and made his debut in 1876 at the annual Salon in Paris. Spending his medical career in the French military, Charvot was posted in colonial Tunisia (1885-89) and Algeria (1892-96), where he documented the life around him and sent oils back to Paris for entry in the SalonsAfter Charvot's death in 1924, his work fell into obscurity. His family preserved his award-winning etchings, his landscapes and Orientalist paintings as well as his unpublished diary, family letters and sketchbooks. Charvot's daughter, Yvonne Charvot Barnett, brought the majority of his work to Jacksonville, Florida where the discovery of these extensive holdings has led to a reevaluation of Charvot's work and a resurrection of the reputation of this accomplished artist. The works now reside in the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, as the Charvot Collection. Through an in-depth review of his career as an artist, this new volume highlights Charvot's breadth of processes, productivity and inspiration in painting, etching and drawing. With a focus on family portraits, pastoral country scenes, nocturnes and North African genre and street scenes, the book weaves family photographs, journal entries and excerpts from family letters to recreate the world view that informed Charvot's oeuvre

In EUGENE'S BOY, Bill Therkelsen, a former electronics engineer, takes readers to the past in heartwarming, often amusing vignettes from his life as a child in 1940's Des Moines, Iowa to his time in the Naval Reserves, to his later years, where he spent time with family and friends at his cabin in Minnesota's northwoods. The stories, originally published on his blog "Northern Lights," are filled with warmth and love. Growing up in the Midwest was always an adventure for the author of Eugene's Boy. Echoes of Jean Shepherd's humorous stories abound, as Therkelsen recalls streetcars, flash cameras, department store Christmas windows, the advent of television, and more. Readers need not have grown up in the 1940's to find a home in these stories, for the themes of home and family are universal.
