Mange år senere, sommeren 1961, går livet i stå for Ivan. Faren blir alvorlig syk.

Fascinerende. Det følelsesmæssige indtryk overrasker.” Kirkus Reviews

The Awakening of Helena Richie centers on a widow grappling with her past and her emotional struggles in a small town. The novel explores the themes of grief, loneliness, and the societal expectations placed on women, particularly in the context of motherhood and personal relationships. The protagonist, Helena Richie, is confronted with the possibility of caring for an orphaned boy, David, which forces her to face her own unresolved pain and the complex dynamics of connection and responsibility. The arrival of a local clergyman and the boy's need for a home lead Helena to reconsider her place in the world, and whether opening her heart to another will bring healing or further heartbreak. As the story unfolds, the narrative delves into the tensions between personal desire and social obligations, reflecting on the internal conflicts of a woman in search of renewal and purpose. The small-town setting provides a rich backdrop for the exploration of human relationships and emotional transformation, as Helena's journey becomes a path toward personal awakening amid the expectations of her community.

The island of St Helena, in the South Atlantic, is one of the most remote and most famous islands in the world. The Duke of Wellington had stopped at the island on his way back from India and had been struck by its remoteness, leading him to recommend it as Napoleon's place of imprisonment after his defeat in 1815, thrusting the island to the centre of world affairs. But where does this legacy leave St Helena today? The island is a unique colonial survivor, almost without an economy of its own. Lacking an airport, the only regular link is by the Royal Mail Ship. The inhabitants are dependent on the support of the British government and the island relies solely on its history, and the tourists attracted by Napoleon's last residence. This fascinating book is a vivid account of a visit to 'the last place on earth' and how a remote people and place respond to their legacy and isolation in a global world.

This volume is part of the Complete Works of Evelyn Waugh critical edition, which brings together all Waugh's published and previously unpublished writings for the first time with comprehensive introductions and annotation, and a full account of each text's manuscript development and textual variants. The edition's General Editor is Alexander Waugh, Evelyn Waugh's grandson and editor of the twelve-volume Personal Writings sequence. Set in the 4th century AD, and Waugh's only historical novel, Helena is the story of the mother of Emperor Constantine and her reputed discovery of the 'True Cross'. Waugh described Helena as his favourite among his works--in a Face to Face interview with John Freeman for the BBC in 1960, for example. His fictional account of Helena's widely-celebrated life and pilgrimage is the product of detailed historical research, and it contributes to our understanding of Waugh's views of the Church, both ancient and modern. Uniquely, however, Helena also demonstrates Waugh's interest in domestic politics set against a backdrop of significant historical acts. This edition of Helena provides the first detailed textual history of the novel. Covering such matters as 'Publication History', 'Cultural Contexts', and 'Critical Reception', the introduction facilitates successful engagement with Waugh's novel from a variety of perspectives, as well as equipping the reader with detailed understanding of its fascinating and complex textual history. Readers are also furnished with a detailed set of explanatory notes which provide information about the people, places, events and texts referenced in Waugh's only historical novel, as well as pointing out links in theme or idea with others of Waugh's works.

In Napoleon's Briton's Paul Brunyee presents a fresh study of Napoleon's last years as a captive on St Helena, telling the story of this final chapter in Bonaparte's life as seen through the eyes of the Britons around him. The Royal Navy officers to whom he surrendered; the people of Brixham who came to gaze in awe at the man when he appeared on the deck of the Bellerophon; the British radicals who recalled what he had done to curb the French Revolution; and those whose job it was to guard and entertain the most famous dictator in Europe on the small island to which he was banished. Brunyee offers insight into the reasoning behind the decision to send Napoleon to the remote island, and paints a fascinating portrait of Napoleon's life on St Helena, his turbulent relationships with his captors, his relationship with Admiral Cockburn and his efforts to persuade visitors to the island to his cause.

Anthropologist Jasmina Praprotnik met Helena Zigon while running. Over the course of an icy Slovenian winter, the two marathon runners got together frequently, and Zigon told Praprotnik about her life. Here, Praprotnik tells Zigon's captivating story in Zigon's own voice. Each chapter is marked by a kilometer of the half-marathon Zigon ran along the Adriatic Sea on her eighty-sixth birthday, shortly after losing her husband of sixty years, Stane. Zigon's life spanned most of the twentieth century. She witnessed the Second World War, the rise and fall of Yugoslavia, and the founding of the new state of Slovenia. Abandoned by her parents and having grown up poor and mistreated by her stepmother, Zigon demonstrates the stoic resilience of a long-suffering Slavic woman. Though beset with challenges, she found a source of strength in the act of running. From a young girl running errands to an old woman running in the face of new grief, running has been a bright thread braided throughout her life. It has served her as a balm and a joy—one that she is grateful to still be able to savor. This inspirational memoir will appeal to general readers, especially those interested in history and running.
