Howard Skempton has contributed to British musical life for more than half a century, as composer, performer and commentator. His music is characterised by simplicity yet sophistication and is appreciated by lay and specialist listeners in equal measure. Skempton studied in London with Cornelius Cardew in the late 1960s, co-founding the Scratch Orchestra, and has written over 600 pieces since then, informed by and informing compositional trends. His outputincludes pieces for solo piano, accordion, cello, and guitar, chamber ensemble, orchestra, and voice. His music is performed by leading artists and recorded by, amongst others, Sony and NMC. This book offers an intimateview of a composer's creative world and how others may interpret it. It is not a conventional "life and works" though it contains a timeline, authorised work list and discography for orientation. It is written for anyone interested in contemporary music and (auto)biography, whether performer, listener, specialist, or student. The first four chapters comprise transcripts of conversations between Skempton and Esther Cavett followed by reflections from different commentators (respectively Matthew Head, Heather Wiebe, Arnold Whittall and Pwyll Ap Siôn). Skempton and Cavett discuss his musical origins, the wide array of musical and extra-musical influences on his music, his early adult life in London, his compositional development and processes, and how he teaches composition. The reflections are rich and wide-ranging, providing biographical, cultural and aesthetic insights and including close readings of keyscores. The penultimate chapter draws upon voices of Skempton's performers (Peter Hill, Thalia Myers, John Tilbury and James Weeks). To close, Cavett reflects on how Skempton told his story and the process of describing a creative life in music. This is my third book of poetry. New Wine Press published Sic Transit in 2015 and The Long and Short of It in 2019. Some poetic notions have kicked around in my head for years; many popped up with the need to pee at 3 or 4 in the night. "First comes the flash; then comes the work," said painter Andrew Wyeth. Finding a sip of truth in the just-right word, hearing the music in a sought-for phrase, give me pleasure, and somehow ease the void since my wife died in 2006. Her painting graces the front cover. A few of these poems are a bit preachy, but at 92 I think you will forgive me.

Animals in Paradise was commissioned by the Swedish and Danish governments to celebrate their connection by bridge, a symbolic finish to centuries of antagonism. Barker's unexpected treatment of the theme provoked unrest on its first showing. 13 Objects movingly reveals the investment we make in inanimate things, their power to unsettle us, and how their talismanic qualities license new ways of seeing the world.

Hodgkin’s art can be seen as providing memorials for people, many of whom are friends, whose absence is countered by th e corresponding physical presence of particular paintings. Descriptive elements visible in his earlier portraits from the 1950s are subsumed within paintings that have, over the course of more than fifty years, become more psychologically charged, but no l ess connected with evoking specific individuals in particular situations. Howard Mowll was the enterprising and indefatigable Archbishop of Sydney from 1934 to 1958. At once robustly Anglican and evangelical in outlook and policy, he set the diocese of Sydney on the course it has followed to the present day.Originating in the Moore College Library Day of 2021, the essays in this book cover previously overlooked and neglected aspects of Mowll's leadership and administration as well as providing new insights into and fresh perspectives on his life and work in Sydney. They also give due attention to the equally remarkable contribution of Mowll's wife, Dorothy. Based on extensive archival research, and paying attention to the context of mid-twentieth century Australia, these essays begin the task of historical assessment by both extending and qualifying the biography provided by Marcus Loane in the immediate aftermath of Mowll's death. Was Mowll one of the two truly great Bishops/Archbishops of Sydney, as Peter Jensen suggests in the Introduction? This book both invites and enables readers to decide for themselves.
