The Obsessions of Isabel: A Trilogy of Novels inspired by life in 15th Century Spain: Book III
CASTILE, 1474-1492: The death of King Enrique and the assumption of the throne of Castile by Isabel, his half-sister, precipitates a war of succession between Isabelline forces and the Portuguese supporting the daughter of the late king. Fern n's mentor and friend, Cardinal Mendoza, now senior military officer of Castile, engages him as military advisor to Isabel and, after hostility with Portugal ends with Isabel triumphant, Fern n is appointed commander of the Hermandad, the new Castilian police force. He succeeds in freeing his sister's husband from the clutches of Torquemada, mastermind of the Inquisition, his talent for the military is recognized by the Catholic Kings, Ferdinand and Isabel, and Fern n is drawn into a series of actions during the ten-year war against the Muslim empire in Granada, the sole remnant of seven-century Arabic power in Iberia. Believing Jews and conversos are now secure from persecution, the release of an Edict by Isabel and Fernando overwhelms all Jews, including Fern n's family, a cataclysmic eruption that no one anticipated and no one can escape. Praise for the Novel "...I am awed by the amount of historical background you have mastered and translated into gripping narrative." Robert Farwell Santa Fe, NM "...you lived in the 1400s and then appeared to use word-art as a medium to paint vivid scenes and situations." Charles C. Rayburn Albuquerque, NM Author of Axioms for the Inventor

--I'm Isabel by the way, Isabel Cohen. You told her your name. She said: --Interesting. How do you pronounce it? You told her: strictly phonetic, just the way it's spelled. --So you're Jewish. --Yep. --My ex is Jewish as well. We have 2 kids, who obviously are also Jewish, since Jewish culture is transmitted through the mother. --You got that right. Do you have a girlfriend? --Yep. Her name is Tamara, and she lives in Minneapolis. --Ah, a commuter romantic relationship. How do you manage that? --We manage it. I fly to Minneapolis once a week to see my kids and to see her. (After you met Isabel, you told Tamara about her, but you said you and Isabel were simply just friends.) Then suddenly, Isabel changed topics, more or less ignoring the information that you had just shared with her about Tamara. --Hey listen, I have an idea. After we're done here, can we grab either coffee or even lunch? --I haven't had lunch yet. So yes by all means lunch. --I haven't had lunch yet either, so lunch. --Sounds like a plan. --I'll come looking for you when I'm done. I'm headed for the nonfiction section right now. --I'll just stay with fiction for now. I'm looking for the Complete Works of Marcel Proust, and also the Complete Works of Samuel Beckett. Jenny will give me a generous discount with both volumes. --I see. See you in a bit.

Unique crimes call for unique detectives When a good friend's beloved granddaughter is murdered, our ambisexual downsized-social-worker and her cat, Bunnywit, are enlisted to help solve the case. For the police, Madeline is just one more dead sex worker - so it is down to our hero and her friends to uncover what happened to her (though not the cat. The cat mainly sulks.) With humour, sarcasm and a good dose of irony, our protagonist swaggers through the mean streets of a Canadian city tracking down leads to get the bad guy. Aided by a love of mystery fiction the gang dives deep into the underbelly of city life. What at first seems an average street killing is actually the surface of a grandiose and glittering set of criminal schemes...

Rachel Haynie dreamed of writing this book about Isabel Whaley Sloan but died in July 2018 before it was finished so her friends joined together to finish the book. Born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1897, Isabel started teaching ballroom dancing and social etiquette when she was 17 years old in 1914. Generations of children, which included Governor Henry McMaster, flocked to her classes all over the state, and she organized dances and social events for thousands of servicemen who were stationed at Fort Jackson during World War II. Her students remember her as a tall, elegant, graciously tough teacher with a silver whistle that she blew vigorously to tame the sometimes-unruly boys and to encourage the girls to sit with their ankles crossed. After teaching dancing and manners in Columbia and around the state for almost three-fourths of a century, she died in 1991 at the age of 93. Her long-time dancing partner Simpson Zimmerman said she never retired.
