Psychosocial Approaches to Health and Wellbeing in Adulthood

Psychosocial Approaches to Health and Wellbeing in Adulthood

This textbook provides an up-to-date guide to theories within psychology and sociology relevant to understanding the major life transitions within adulthood and older age and demonstrates how they can be applied in practice. In doing so, it offers a psychosocial approach that will equip readers to meet the combined physical, psychological and social needs of those in their care. In this book the impact of biological factors on adult experience is acknowledged alongside a careful exploration of the socially constructed nature of different stages of adulthood across the lifespan. In its analysis of developmental stages, the book covers key issues of current concern including emerging and early adulthood, ‘the sandwich generation’ (those caring for both their children and their parents), later life, medicalisation, neurodiversity, long term and degenerative conditions, bereavement, and grief. Both vulnerabilities and ways to enhance resilience encouraging healthy ageing are examined. Utilising practice-oriented case studies and reflective questions it illustrates how psychosocial perspectives may be applied within family, workplace, health, and social care contexts. It offers under graduate and graduate students of social work, nursing, mental health, education, psychology, human development, gerontology and ageing, the tools needed to evaluate the interlocking psychosocial factors influencing the lives of adults at different stages of life.

Frances Molloy: The Portrait of a Postwar Northern Irish Woman Writer is the story of Ann McGill Brady, the woman who wrote herself into the history of the Irish novel as Frances Molloy. It is also the story of a poor, uneducated, Catholic female in Northern Ireland in the 1960s; she had few choices and they were the traditional ones: marriage or work a dead-end job. For young Molloy, marriage was out the question because she did not want to replicate her own mother’s life. Molloy believed that God did have a higher plan for her life, and she believed that she would better serve the world as a nun than as a seamstress in a pajama factory. Frances Molloy gives a voice to the poverty, prejudice, and violence the Catholic community endured in Northern Ireland under the Stormont Government in the post-World War II era. While identity is always at the forefront of society in Northern Ireland, there is little record of the Catholic female, bound by tradition and poverty, in the North. A group without a history is a group without an identity—no one has yet written a history of the poor Northern Irish Catholic female in the latter half of the twentieth century. Frances Molloy was a Catholic woman in a sectarian state, and her story includes discrimination, segregation, and unjust incarceration in Northern Ireland in the latter half of the twentieth century.
Postformal Education

Postformal Education

This book explains why the current education model, which was developed in the 19th century to meet the needs of industrial expansion, is obsolete. It points to the need for a new approach to education designed to prepare young people for global uncertainty, accelerating change and unprecedented complexity. The book offers a new educational philosophy to awaken the creative, big-picture and long-term thinking that will help equip students to face tomorrow’s challenges. Inside, readers will find a dialogue between adult developmental psychology research on higher stages of reasoning and today’s most evolved education research and practice. This dialogue reveals surprising links between play and wisdom, imagination and ecology, holism and love. The overwhelming issues of global climate crisis, growing economic disparity and the youth mental health epidemic reveal how dramatically the current education model has failed students and educators. This book raises a planet-wide call to deeply question how we actually think and how we must educate. It articulates a postformal education philosophy as a foundation for educational futures. The book will appeal to educators, educational philosophers, pre-service teacher educators, educational and developmental psychologists and educational researchers, including postgraduates with an interest in transformational educational theories designed for the complexity of the 21st century. This is the most compelling book on education I have read for many years. It has major implications for all who are in a position to influence developments in teacher education and educational policy. Gidley is one of the very rare scholars who can write intelligently and accessibly about the past, present and future in education. I was challenged and ultimately convinced by her contention that ‘what masquerades as education today must be seen for what it is – an anachronistic relic of the industrial past’. Gidley’s challenge is to ‘co-evolve’ a radically new education. All who seek to play a part must read this book.

A Teacher's Dilemma

A Teacher's Dilemma

The study focuses on the tension teachers face between the demand that they hold high expectations for their students and the reality that they face when they confront the evidence at their disposal. The author argues that this tension is not easily avoided; there are good arguments for both optimism and evidentialism. We can recast this tension when we recognize that expectations are noisy signals of more fundamental underlying factors. High expectations often signal to us that the teacher is committed to doing her job well. It is that commitment that matters to us. A teacher with keen sensitivity to the evidence impresses us because we take it to mean that she is effectively attuned to her particular students’ needs. If a teacher arrives at an expectation without contextualizing the evidence, paying attention to her specific students, or based on stereotype and prejudice, it fails to engage in the kind of responsive inquiry essential to good teaching. The author writes that the tension facing teachers can be recast by reflecting on the inquiry at the heart of teaching.

The United States government has been warped by unlimited greed, brittle egos, and partisan justices. The existing system is too broken to fix piecemeal, so rewrite and restructure the Constitution. There are many special interest goals: End Citizen's United (corporate personhood). Protect women's healthcare rights. The Equal Rights Amendment. Protect the right to bear arms. Separation of church and state. LGBT rights. End the Electoral College. Marriage rights. Universal healthcare. Worker's rights to unionize. Fight voter suppression. Racial inequality and the death penalty. And many more. What if WE FIX THEM ALL AT ONCE? That's the goal here. Keep the three Branch structure. Force people to prove they are minimally qualified to serve in the position to which they have been elected or nominated, called "Fitness for Duty Assessments." Clarify critical human rights (legal personhood, bodily autonomy, etc.). Force simple Electoral District boundaries to limit gerrymandering. Ban automatic National Security clearances. Add term limits for Congress and the Supreme Court. It is time to push for unapologetic support for human rights and a democratic government that tolerates capitalism but moderates unabashed greed. Capitalism needs State intervention because capitalism has no moral center. Critical assumptions about fundamental human rights, core legal principles, and the role of the country in the world need to be stated explicitly to prevent corruption by antidemocratic forces. Here is a summary of the major changes: Term limits of 12 years for House, Senate, and Supreme Court. Require all high level Executive, Legislative, and Judicial candidates to meet basic mental and physical health standards, financial disclosure, and demonstrate a sound understanding of their role in government. Require earned National Security clearances for all Executive and Legislative candidates. No more automatic clearances. Constitutional right to bodily autonomy. Fix extreme gerrymandering by applying the six-boundary rule. Make House and Senate more fairly representative by having one House Representative per 800,000 people in a state, and one Senator for each 4 million people in a state. Change House term to three years, with half elected every three years. Keep senate at six-year term, also with half elected every three years. Ban corporate and special interest donations to Federal and State campaigns. No more PACs or dark money. Eliminate the electoral college. Ban laws based on marital status. Ban the death penalty and torture. Explicitly clarify separation of church and state, gun rights, presumption of innocence, and other critical legal concepts. Jennifer M. Booker, BS, MS, Ph.D., BSN, RN, is not a lawyer. She regards this as a bonus for rewriting the Constitution so it can be better understood by people who are also not lawyers. She has earned three engineering degrees (BS, MS, Ph.D.), worked extensively in the defense and aviation industries, was a professor of computing for two decades, and earned a nursing degree (BSN) and Registered Nurse license. She has done extensive studies of social sciences, including political science, psychology, and gender studies. Her website is jenbooker.com. This is Dr. Booker's second book. Her first book was The New Normal: Coming out as Transgender in Midlife (2019), also from The Unbound Press.
