Judith Lauand: Concrete Detour

A long-overdue introduction to the Brazilian Concrete art protagonist and Grupo Ruptura member Brazilian painter and printmaker Judith Lauand (born 1922) is regarded as a key figure of Concrete art. Lauand is the only woman to have participated in Grupo Ruptura, a collective of artists that pioneered Concretism in Brazil, which counted such luminaries as Waldemar Cordeiro, Luiz Sacilotto, Geraldo de Barros, Lotar Charoux and Anatol Wladyslaw among its ranks. Lauand, initially self-taught, moved to São Paulo in the 1950s and encountered Concrete art while working at the 2nd Bienal Internacional. She then quickly delved into the movement, holding a solo show within the same year. This survey follows Lauand’s tremendous oeuvre across five decades, paying particular attention to her engagement with the Concrete movement. The catalog cover is rendered in striking Concrete style, lined with squares and enclosed within a black slipcase dotted with geometric cutouts.

Den amerikanske filosof Judith Butlers feminisme bygger bl.a. på en særlig kritisk tilegnelse af psykoanalysen. Butler både benytter sig af og forholder sig kritisk til psykoanalysen, hovedsageligt Sigmund Freud og Jacques Lacans ideer, eftersom det er med støtte i den, at Butler fremsætter en række ideer om køn, fallos, homoseksualitet, det reelle osv.Skønt Butler er en vigtig person i kampen for homoseksuelles, kvinders osv. rettigheder, er det med rette blevet påpeget, at Butler misfortolker eller misforstår en række af de kilder eller opfattelser, som filosoffen refererer til. Det gælder også tilegnelsen af psykoanalysen. Fokus i denne bog er denne tilegnelse.

Judith Tendler (1938-2016) was a development economist who, as consultant for international development agencies, combined in an original way scholarship in the social sciences and professional work. From field observation she was able to extract theoretical concepts that she used in her fruitful and extraordinary "teaching cum research," especially with graduate students at MIT. Since her Ph.D. dissertation, conducted under the supervision of Albert Hirschman, she worked out her unconventional way of looking at reality: she suggested to "look at any successes with a sense of awe (...) explaining what is happening against a background of what is predictable and what is a surprise"
