Borders and Freedom of Movement in the Holy Roman Empire
In the Holy Roman Empire 'no prince... can forbid men passage in the common road', wrote the English jurist John Selden. In practice, moving through one the most fractured landscapes in human history was rarely as straightforward as suggested by Selden's account of the German 'liberty of passage'. Across the Old Reich, mobile populations-from emperors to peasants-defied attempts to channel their mobility with actions ranging from mockery to bloodshed. In this study, Luca Scholz charts this contentious ordering of movement through the lens of safe conduct, an institution that was common throughout the early modern world but became a key framework for negotiating freedom of movement and its restriction in the Empire. Borders and Freedom of Movement in the Holy Roman Empire draws on sources discovered in twenty archives, from newly unearthed drawings to first-hand accounts by peasants, princes, and prisoners. Scholz's maps shift the focus from the border to the thoroughfare to show that controls of moving goods and people were rarely concentrated at borders before the mid-eighteenth century. Uncovering a forgotten chapter in the history of free movement, the author presents a new look at the unstable relationship of political authority and human mobility in the heartlands of old-regime Europe.
Borders and the Politics of Space in Late Medieval Italy
Space matters. It situates our history, structures our daily lives, and often determines what we can and cannot do. Borders are central to this reality. Tools and symbols of separation, power, and identity, they bring people together as much as they set them apart. This book explores how borders were understood, made, and encountered at the end of the Middle Ages, and what they can tell us about the spatial fabric of society at the threshold of modernity. It shows that pre-modern borders were nothing like the fuzzy lines they are typically made out to be, that border-making was rarely a top-down process and should instead be studied as an interactive endeavour, and that space was shaped by communities far more than states in this period. At its core, Borders and the Politics of Space in Late Medieval Italy is the account of a frontier which would mark the Italian peninsula for centuries, that between the territories of the Duchy of Milan and those of the Republic of Venice. But it is also a study of how rulers and subjects alike defined spaces they could call their own. Luca Zenobi combines methods from several disciplines and applies them to a range of evidence from twenty different libraries and archives, including theoretical treatises and pragmatic records, written chronicles and cartographic visualisations, private documents and official correspondence. The cast of characters is equally eclectic, featuring influential thinkers and pragmatic statesmen, zealous factions and clumsy bureaucrats, hopeless beggars and ambitious princes. On the border, their stories intersect and reveal their part in a shared history.
Reader Immersion in Latin Prose and Verse Narrative

Reader Immersion in Latin Prose and Verse Narrative

Immersion used to be disregarded by academic scholarship as a secondary aspect of ancient narrative. It was mostly considered typical of a passive reading style unworthy of intellectual consideration. However, the study of the immersive strategies adopted by ancient authors can often reveal intriguing and sometimes unsuspected layers of sophistication in their works. This makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of ancient literary culture. This is the first monograph that thoroughly analyses how Latin authors of narrative encourage their readers' immersion in the fictional world--an aspect of fictional literature that is essential to fully understand the artistry and sophistication of many ancient texts. Immersed readers of fiction experience the narrative world and its inhabitants-the fictional characters-as if they were to some extent real. This experience affects the readers' visual imagination, but also their emotional reactions, physical sensations, enactive responses, and interpretive activities; deeply engaging texts adopt various strategies to boost all these aspects of the reading experience they afford. The book mobilizes the resources and methods of several scholarly approaches, both traditional and new, to explore these strategies in ancient prose and verse narratives. Detailed analysis of language and style is combined with a careful consideration of the more general features of ancient literary genres; narratology joins forces with the study of emotions and with neurocognitive perspectives. Reader immersion is a pervasive aspect of all kinds of narrative literature, but it is more prominent in some texts than in others. In this study, Luca Graverini analyses a broad range of ancient narrative works, spanning several centuries and different literary genres. In purely chronological order, these include the comedies of Plautus, the Aeneid of Vergil, the Metamorphoses of Ovid, the tragedies of Seneca, the Satyrica of Petronius, and the Metamorphoses of Apuleius. The interpretive approach adopted in this monograph can attract the interest of many readers with different backgrounds and working on different subjects.

Money and Politics reconstructs for the first time the full history of the creation of the Latin Monetary Union (LMU), a long forgotten precedent of the Euro. It focuses in particular on the attempted transformation of the LMU into a European Monetary Union between 1865 and 1873. The use of extensive diplomatic and banking archives in France, Britain, Italy, and Germany has enabled the author to reconstruct in detail the intellectual debate concerning the gold standard and bimetallism, as well as the surrounding political and diplomatic manoeuvres, which in many ways anticipated the conflicts of today's monetary unification. Einaudi's findings show that the project of a common currency was well received in central and southern Europe, but worked against the emergence of a united Germany, and was blocked by the Franco--Prussian war. In Britain, Disraeli declined to join the Latin Monetary Union, but in 1869, the new Liberal Chancellor of the Exchequer saw the advantages offered by a scheme which appeared to be enjoying success on the Continent, and attempted to join the monetary union, thereby alienating and securing the opposition of both the City and Gladstone. This book is written in an accessible and multidisciplinary fashion, and will appeal to economists, historians, and political scientists with an interest in the formation and readjustment of government policies. It also paints a fascinating picture for policy makers and all those concerned with current debates surrounding EMU and the British position.
The Definition of Subsidy and State Aid

The Definition of Subsidy and State Aid

Luca Rubini

This book presents a conceptual framework for analysing the definitions of State aid and subsidy in EC and WTO law. This is done through a comparative analysis, examining the coherence of the conceptual understanding of the crucial, but still elusive, issue of the definition of subsidy. The first, important finding is that the topic is not only technical but raises more fundamental questions about the objectives of subsidy control in a given legal system and, more radically, about the goals of that system itself. The analysis does not only concentrate on the state of the law but critically looks forward offering suggestions for new interpretations and law reform. The book focuses on the substantive provisions of the EC and WTO relating to what are identified by the author as the core properties of a notion of subsidy, ie a form of public action, the grant of an economic advantage and the ensuing impact on the competitive process. The current regulation in EC and WTO law is analysed, compared and assessed in depth, and tested against a baseline represented by of a notion of subsidy inserted in a subsidy regulation pursuing certain objectives. Drawing on the results of the comparative exercise, the book argues that both systems can learn valuable lessons from each other to achieve a greater coherence and a more efficient regulatory system.
Image and Myth

On museum visits, we pass by beautiful, well-preserved vases from ancient Greece - but how often do we understand what the images on them depict? In "Image and Myth", Luca Giuliani tells the stories behind the pictures, exploring how artists of antiquity had to determine which motifs or historical and mythic events to use to tell an underlying story while also keeping in mind the tastes and expectations of paying clients. Covering the range of Greek style and its growth between the early Archaic and Hellenistic periods, Giuliani describes the intellectual, social, and artistic contexts in which the images were created. He reveals that developments in Greek vase painting were driven as much by the times as they were by tradition - the better-known the story, the less leeway the artists had in interpreting it. As literary culture transformed from an oral tradition, in which stories were always in flux, to the stability of written texts, the images produced by artists eventually became nothing more than illustrations of canonical works. At once a work of cultural and art history, "Image and Myth" builds a new way of understanding the visual culture of ancient Greece.
